The Thief River Fallscross country teams madethe most of a move fromSection 8AA to Section 8Awith a pair of state quali-fiers. Jerzie Finstad qualifiedfor her third state meet withan 11th place finish in thesection meet, while JakeDavis qualified for his firststate meet with a ninthplace finish in the boy’s race.Finstad finished 57th in thegirls race at state. Davis fin-ished 66th in the boys race. Both runners were sen-iors and but the cupboardisn’t bare for Coach NatashaReierson’s Prowler crosscountry teams. On the boys side, theProwlers will lean on anexperienced trio of runners -in Jonah Kalsnes, IsaacMauch and Will MacLean.Reierson expects all threerunners to consistently fin-ish in the 10-12 range eachrace. In their season-open-ing Sports BoosterInvitational, Mauch finishedfifth, Kalsnes was seventhand MacLean was eighth. “Senior, Jonah Kalsnes, islooking to be one of our topthree runners this season,”Reierson said. “He has putin a lot of time practicingand his speed and stride is
have gotten really good.Daily, Isaac, Jonah and Willbattle for that top spot onthe team in practice. It isreally fun to see them runand try to be their best whilestill cheering on each other. “Isaac is a great runner,he has a lot speed, we willwork on pacing and trying toget the most out of that lastmile and 800m on thecourse.” Last year, EthanLunsetter, PaulKoppenhaver and ZachWikert ran varsity at times, and JV in some meets.Seniors Lunsetter andKoppenhaver and juniorWikert are all expected torun varsity this year. “They have been workinghard all summer and we areexcited to see what they cando this season,” Reiersonsaid. Moving up to the numberone spot on the girls side issophomore Dru Harbott, who finished 16th in lastyear’s section race – one spotaway from going to state. “Dru Harbott has beenrunning Varsity for twoyears and this year, herthird season will be her bestyear,” Reierson said. “Wehave been running all sum-mer and look to push her in
practice to be a top-five run-ner at all meets.” Senior Elaina Ballard, avarsity runner in 2018 whomissed the 2019 season dueto an injury is back for herfinal campaign. “We are excited to haveher back for her senior year,” Reierson said. “She ishealthy and running well.” Also returning from lastyear’s section team is eighthgrader Kelsey Baltes. The Prowlers will get aboost from eighth graderRuby Geiser, who returns tothe team after playing vol-leyball in 2019. Reiersonnoted that Geiser was a toprunner in junior high racesduring her sixth grade sea-son. Another volleyball playerwho has joined cross countryis Josie Peterson. “She hasbeen working hard in prac-tice and will be a great addi-tion to our Varsity Girlsteam this season,” Reiersonsaid. Rounding out the girlsvarsity roster is seventhgrader Sophia Eidsmoe. Both the boys and girlsteams have set goals to fin-ish the top 3-5 among the 11-12 teams in each meet, whileindividual runners look tobreak their own personal
records. While the distance is thesame from race to race – 5Kfor the varsity and juniorvarsity races, and 2 miles formiddle school – the terrainof each course is different. “Each week, we will focuson that course and train forwhatever it looks like,”Reierson said. “For Bagley,we will train for flat-grasscourse with a rolling smallhills. For Roseau, will focuson flat, fast, short grasstrain. Some courses havegravel, so we will train forthat during those weeks andso on. “We need to be specificwith all our practices, sincewe have one race a week andthe day before a meet islight and the day after ameet is recovery run. Wehave one to two days forgood practice days eachweek.” Along with preparing forthe courses that they willsee each week, the crosscountry teams are alsoworking on pacing, startsand finishes. “We need to have goodpacing, so we can have thosegood finishes and reach ourgoals,” Reierson said.

Prowler girls swim team enters uncharted waters Thief River Falls returnsmost of its lineup from ateam that won the NorthBorder Conference for thefourth consecutive year. Gone from the 2019 squadis Annika Dalager and MollyHalsa. Dalager qualified forstate in the 50-yard freestylewith a runner-up finish inthe Section 8A meet lastyear. She added a third placefinish in the 100 backstrokeand was part of multiple sec-tion-placing relays. Also lost from the 2019team was section placewin-ner Molly Halsa, who placed13th in the 100 butterfly and15th in the 500 freestyle, along with multiple relays. “We are excited for themand sad to see them go, butwe do have some great lead-ers coming up,” said HeadCoach Danielle Spiten. “Wereally are going to rely onour new captains, AlanahMack, Chloe Lundeen andIsabella Ek. I'm sure theywill do a great job and helpkeep our team moving for-ward.” Mack, Lundeen, KinseyAnderson and Paige Greeneare seniors on this year’ssquad. Mack finished 15th in the100 freestyle at last year’ssection meet, and she justmissed making it to day twoof the section meeting in the200 freestyle with a 17thplace finish. “Alanah competed well atsections last year and is alsooften in our A relays,” Spitensaid. “Alanah is also a greatleader. She has done a lot tohelp recruit younger swim-mers to the team and, likeChloe, make them feel wel-come and help peer-trainthem as well. Alanah, asone of our faster swimmers, also sets a great example ofhow hard work can makeyou a great athlete.” Ek, was a section com-petitor during her sopho-more season in 2019, finish-ing 19th in both the 200 and500 freestyle events. “Isabella is easily thehardest worker on our teamand that is one of the rea-sons she is a captain for usthis year,” Spiten said. “Shehas set big goals for herselfthis year and hopes to medalin the 500 freestyle at sec-tions. She's also a great stu-dent. Keep an eye out for
her name on the honor rolllists.” Lundeen was a sectionparticipant in the 200freestyle event last year. “Chloe is a second-yearcaptain for us,” Spiten said.“The younger kids love herand she always sets a greatexample for them. She goesout of her way to make themfeel welcome and help themtransition into swimming. She's another distanceswimmer for us; her mainevents are the 200 and 500freestyle. If you ever watchChloe swim the 500, sheoften is smiling through itall.” Greene was a section par-ticipant in the 200 IM and100 butterfly last season. “Paige is the swimmerwho can do it all!Sometimes she's our resi-dent flyer/breast stroker.Sometimes she's our IMswimmer,” Spiten said.“Paige is a great athlete andthat shows with her versatil-ity. Paige is also our teambaker. She's the maker of allthe sweet treats and some-times if we are lucky, she'llbring them to practice. As acoach, I am so excited to seePaige swim this year. Likelyshe'll be very competitive inthe 200 IM and 100Breaststroke this year.” Anderson was a sectionparticipant in breaststroke, and she also swims thesprint freestyle events. “Kinsey works so hard atmeets and is always askingus how she can get fasterand improve her times,”Spiten said. “She has reallybecome an excellent swim-mer over that last few sea-sons and will be fighting forA relay spots this year aswell. We can’t wait to watchher swim this year. Also returning to the line-up are section placewinnerKendal Rantanen, who tookfifth in the 100 freestyle andeighth in the 50 freestyle;and Maren Espe, who fin-
ished eighth in the 100breaststroke. “We have a lot of girlsreturning this year that didgreat at sections last year,”Spiten said. “KendalRantanen was really suc-cessful in both the 50 freeand the 100 free. MarenEspe also did well last yearin the 100 breaststroke. “We likely won't have astate meet or maybe even asection meet this year butKendal Rantanen andMaren Espe have the bestshot at making it to statethis year. Both did very wellin their events last year andswam against several girlswho have now graduated.” Jaymin Klosterman willbe stepping into the team’stop backstroke role, replac-ing Dalager. Aniyah Fields, seventh grade, and VanessaThibert, eighth grade, areexpected to make their var-sity debuts.
COVID-19 pandemic creates uncertainty
The 2020 girls swimmingseason has already been likenone before it with severalmodifications in place tomake the sport safer duringthe COVID-19 pandemic. This year, meets are limitedto two teams and no specta-tors are allowed insideaquatic venues. Event work-ers, coaches and athleteswho are between races mustwear masks. The Prowlers’ first twohome meets were postponeddue to the virus and thelimit on number of teamscompeting at given timemake the chance of a post-season appear doubtful. “Our biggest goal as ateam this year is to worktogether as a team to begood teammates with oneanother and help navigatethese unprecedented times,”Spiten said.

In 2019, the Thief RiverFalls girls tennis team tookfull advantage of its reclassi-fication from large schoolClass AA to smaller Class Aby winning the program’sfirst section championship ingirls tennis since 2006 andthird in program history. The Prowlers lost fiveseniors off the 2019 sectionchampionship team – BreaPrickett, Bela Nelson, KhloeLund, Ava Yuska and CieraKotaska – but like otherstrong programs, theyreloaded with talented play-ers and look like the odds-onfavorite to repeat in Section8A. “The goal stays the sameas in the years past evenwith it being a Covid-19year,” said Head CoachFabian Tunberg, who entershis fourth year at the girls
tennis helm. “Prepare to wina Section 8A championship, control the controllables andmake the most of each daythat we get on the court as ateam.” Last year, the Prowlersposted a 20-7 record thatincluded a wild section tour-nament where all roundswere played in one day, andan 0-2 showing at state. Among the departedplayers, Nelson and Lundserved as the Prowlers’ topdoubles team; Yuska playedtwo or three singles, depend-ing on the opponent; andPrickett typically played inthe number three doublesspot with Gabby Steele. Senior Emma Fagerstromreturns as the number onesingles player. Captain ofthe 2020 team, Fagerstromwas a section runner-up and
individual state qualifier in2019 after finishing secondin the Section 8AA singlestournament. Sophomore BrooklynBroadwell is returning inthe number two singles spot.Broadwell, assistant captainon this year’s squad, compet-ed primarily in the numbertwo singles spot for dualslast season, but she compet-ed in the number two dou-bles spot with Prickett dur-ing individuals last season. Sophomore Bell Hamrereturns to the singles start-ing lineup. She is currentlyplaying the number threesingles spot after spendinglast season playing the num-ber four spot. Rounding out the four sin-gles spots is freshman AverySkaar, who has moved up tonumber four singles.
Last year’s number twodoubles team of seniorBrooklyn Brouse and juniorAbby Flaagan moves up onespot to number one doublesthis year. Flaagan wasselected as assistant captainprior to the start of the sea-son. Playing number two dou-bles will be a pair of experi-enced seniors in GabbySteele and Hannah Cleven. The number three doublesteam will be decided as theseason moves along, withthree players currently com-peting for the two spots.Tunberg notes that TristaSpears, Avery Malone andStephanie Dagg were all top-15 players a year ago andthe three will rotatethroughout the regular sea-son. Also competing for varsity
time are Rachel Kloety,Paige Weets, BrayleeWienen, Piper Greene,Jenae Johnson, EmmaChristianson, Jacey Novakand Katheryn Melby. Overall, the lineup ispretty much set, butTunberg said there could besome changes. “You might see a switch,Fagerstrom and Broadwellswitch up a bit or evenHamre and Skaar,” Tunbergsaid. “Some of that willdepend on challenge match-es.” Among the teams chal-lenging the Prowlers for thesection 8A title are defend-ing runner-up Perham/NewYork Mills Yellowjackets, and the Crookston Pirates. “We have to support eachother on and off the court,”Tunberg said. “This will help
build our chemistry as ateam. Our singles playersmust ramp up their deepball consistency and angle ofthe ball around the court toput players away faster. Ourdoubles are now completelybought into coming up to thenet. The next step for us willbe to learn different styles ofcoming to the net and play-ing smart tennis. Tunberg said the opportu-nity to build off the momen-tum of last years sectionchampionship win makesthis an exciting year for thegirls tennis program. “I believe we can main-tain focus and drive throughthe year,” Tunberg said.“Our season is in the handsof other Covid-19 as CaptainEmma Fagerstrom has saidin the past, so that justmeans we need to focus onthe present, we can dial inon what’s really important. We are a better teambecause of it.” This year, the Prowlergirls tennis team is workingwith a new group calledEyesUpMindset, which isrun by two former ProwlerCoaches - Jamie Wagner andJohn Shirkey. “The overall arching goalwill be to develop a teamthat performs at a higherlevel because we are takingactive and deliberate stepsto becoming a high perform-ance team,” Tunberg said.
