Foreword This document has been prepared to offer guidance for those school community members wishing to know more about the implementation of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOd) program at Maroochydore State High School. Each section should be thoroughly read and understood before following the guidelines and procedures. The content of this handbook is subject to change and notifications will be communicated via the school’s website. Questions related to material contained within can be directed to relevant personnel at the school, by contacting the school directly.

Introduction Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are used at Maroochydore State High School to enhance the teaching and learning within the classroom but also to extend student learning beyond the classroom. Being part of 1:1 program has many benefits including but not limited to:

• Students who access their own computers take greater pride and ownership over theknowledge they create and are more independent learners

• A flow‐on to more flexible forms of schooling, 1‐to‐1 programs extend formal learningcommunities to include parents, siblings and other people important in students’ lives.

What is a Bring Your Own Device (BYOd) scheme? Students are able to provide their own device for ICT usage at school. The school will provide access to the internet for these devices and allow students to use the devices in class to support teaching and learning. One of the rationales for the scheme is that students will be comfortable using a device that they "own" and manage themselves. They should be familiar with how it works and the software installed on the device.

Maroochydore State High School is committed to moving students forward in a contemporary learning environment and the progression towards a BYOD model will assist with this. Teaching staff will work with students to ensure that they have access to relevant learning materials on the device of their choice.

Participation in the BYOd scheme Parents and families who choose to participate in the BYOD scheme need to:

• Read and understand the policies and procedures outlined in this document.

• Sign the BYOD Student Connectivity Form

• Ensure the $40 ICT Support and Connectivity Fee has been paid

• Read and understand the Acceptable Use Policy (AUP)

Required device specifications While no specific laptop model is required, Windows 10 laptops are the preferred device.

Apple laptops are supported however some applications and functionality may not be available. An iPad may be used but only as a supplementary device i.e. for e-books or internet access. iPads cannot print or connect to our file servers. Android devices and Chromebooks are not supported and phones are not acceptable.

Devices larger than 15” are not recommended due to their bulkiness.

Devices which do not meet the minimum specifications below will experience difficulties operating within the school.

Choosing a device Making device selections is the responsibility of the parents and caregivers. Taking a copy of the minimum specifications to retail outlets would be an appropriate way to begin the process.

Can we provide advice? The school cannot provide suggestions to parents and caregivers regarding various makes or models; nor will the school suggest one retail outlet is preferred over another. However, if required, the school can advise that a particular device will be suitable. Discussions about curriculum suitability can be held with appropriate staff at school.

Backing up Technology failure is a fact of life and it is the responsibility of the student to ensure that their material is back up regularly. The school will not be held responsible for loss of material or assessment on BYOD devices. Technology failure will not be accepted as an excuse for non‐ submission of assessment tasks. Students are advised to always back up their work in at least two locations.

Local backup Backups of student documents should be made at least each week, and even more regularly during peak periods of assessment, i.e. when a lot of assessment is due or being worked on. Procedures for this will vary from device to device but there should be the provision to copy files to an SD card, external hard drive or USB disk or school network drive. There are a number of applications which make this easy and advice related to these can be obtained from the school’s IT Support Desk. Periodically, a separate backup should be made and stored off‐site, e.g. at a relative’s house.

Cloud backup There are a number of online services which allow users to backup their files to “the cloud”. These usually require the end‐user to register with the site, providing a username and password, and sometimes installing an application to copy the files from the device to the service. Some providers include Dropbox, Evernote, Google and Microsoft. These services may not be accessible via the school’s internet. The school does not recommend any particular service and End User License Agreements and Privacy Agreements should be read carefully before creating an account.

Caring for the device It is the responsibility of families to keep their chosen ICT device in good working order to ensure minimal disruption to learning. Each device and carry case/bag should be clearly labelled with the student’s name. Students should take care to put their device to sleep when moving around, as failure to do so can damage the hard drive and potentially lose files. Choosing a device with a solid state drive (SSD) will alleviate this issue.

Security of devices The security of the device remains the responsibility of the student. While the school provides lockers for Years 8‐12 students and locked classrooms for year 7 students to assist with storage of devices during the day, maintaining a vigilant disposition towards the device is still important.

Keeping the device with the student at all times is vital when not in a locker (locked classroom for year 7) and leaving the device overnight in a locker or classroom is not permitted.

Charging devices Students will be expected to bring a fully‐charged device to school each day. There will be no provision for charging personal devices at school and families should consult with suppliers regarding battery life to ensure that the device they choose has sufficient charge to last the school day.

Cases A strong carry case is one of the most effective ways to provide some protection for the device from accidental damage like drops. Use a bag or case with adequate padding designed to hold a laptop.

Insurance Insurance for personal devices is the responsibility of the family. There are a number of aspects which should be considered, including accidental damage protection. This should cover the device both on and off site. Fire, theft and “acts of God” are usually not covered in these policies and the device should be included in the family home or contents policy. All insurance claims must be settled between families and the respective insurance companies.

Warranty Most devices will only come with a minimal manufacturer’s warranty and families should consider an extended warranty and ensure they are familiar with the conditions of this warranty.

Protecting the school Any personal device brought on‐site is required to have an up‐to‐date operating system on it. Devices may be inspected periodically to ensure compliance with this requirement.

Repairs and maintenance All maintenance on personal devices is the responsibility of the family. This includes issues related to software, including the operating system. Families should speak to their vendors regarding turnaround times and warranty claims. Day loan devices may be available from the IT Support desk for use while repairs are occurring, though this will need to be balanced by the demand on the equity pool.

School support The school will provide a limited amount of technical support via the IT Support desk, located in the Library. In most cases, they will suggest a suitable course of action for families to take, such as warranty claim, insurance claim, etc.

Using the devices at school Wi‐Fi and 3G/4G Connection to the school Wi‐Fi allows access to the Internet, filtered and monitored by the department. Standard department filters will screen usage and access. 3G/4G access is not filtered by the department so should be disconnected and not used at school. The school takes no responsibility for content accessed by students using this facility on their personal devices.

Printing Devices should be able to print to the school’s printers.

Equity pool The school recognises that not every family will be able to provide ICT devices for their student. The equity pool is a means of ensuring that all students have access to devices at some stage of their education to supplement their learning in the classroom. For some, this will mean accessing devices from the common pools located in the classrooms or the Library.

Software and applications School‐owned software may only be installed on school‐owned devices. In the rare case that a subject requires subject specific software to be installed, the responsibility for installing the required software on personal devices, therefore, falls on the families providing the devices. Some software is available free of charge. See below: Microsoft Office 365 Suite All state school students from Prep to Year 12 can now download multiple free copies of the Microsoft Office 365 Suite to their personal home and mobile computer equipment. Please note that the initial login page requires a MIS email address and password with the following authentication page only requiring MIS ID and password. Download process Sign in to Office 365 to download a free copy of the Microsoft Office 365 Suite at http://portal.office.com Adobe Suite Students will also be able to obtain a copy of the current Adobe CC Suite which includes Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere Pro.

BYOD Acceptable Use Policy

INTRODUCTION 1. This acceptable use policy is applicable to your use of the Queensland Department of Education &

Training (DET) BYOd network provided by Bridge Point Communications, a wholly owned subsidiary of Telstra Corporation (Bridge Point).

2. This acceptable use policy forms part of your agreement with is for the service. 3. The rules in this Acceptable Use Policy are a non‐exhaustive list of requirements. We may

therefore issue directions to you that are not covered by the requirements below. 4. We may interpret and apply the rules below in such reasonable manner that we consider

appropriate in the circumstances.

YOUR OBLIGATIONS 1. You must abide by the provisions of this Acceptable Use Policy 2. You must only use the Service for the purposes for which it was designed and offered and not for

any other purpose. 3. You must use the Service in a responsible manner, taking into account the effects your use of the

Service may have on other users of the service.

ACCEPTABLE USE 1. It is acceptable to use the service for providing access to the DET Student Network to

subscribers of the service. 2. Subscribers to the ‘Standard users’ offering may enroll a maximum of three (3) devices per

student for network access. 3. Subscribers to the ‘Power users’ offering may enroll a maximum of six (6) devices per student for

network access.3.4 ‐ Guest users who are not subscribers to the service may be provisioned for access for a maximum of 5 days.

4. Guest users are permitted to enroll a maximum of one (1) device for network access. 5. Guest users’ access is restricted to internet access only, Guest users will not be able to access

the internal DET network. 6. Schools are permitted to on charge users a fee commensurate with the cost to the school of

subscribing and administering access to the service.

WHAT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE USE 1. On boarding access for users who have not subscribed and paid for access to the service. 2. Allowing multiple users to use one set of credentials to access the Service. 3. Allowing users to on sell access to the Service.

BREACHING THIS POLICY 1. Breaching this Acceptable Use Policy may result in Bridge Point taking action to remedy the

breach. 2. Where users are being on boarded for access beyond the number of subscriptions purchased,

Bridge Point reserves the right to charge in line with the pricing schedule for the additional users as well as an administration fee commensurate with the cost and effort associated with dealing with the issue. To avoid such charges it is recommended each school leverages Active Directory to limit access to only those who have subscribed to the Service.
