WWW.ICRI.ORG 46 CONCRETE REPAIR BULLETIN NOVEMBER/DECEMBER 2020 T he repair of this 840-foot-long pier which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean posed some major challenges. Not only did the beams supporting the wood deck of the fishing pier need to be repaired with no viable floating platform available, but the restaurant at the west end of the pier needed to remain open for business. Additionally, the fishing pier, east of the restaurant, needed to be accessible to the public 24/7. This landmark destination had suffered damage due to severe weather and heavy use. The concrete beams supporting the pressure- treated infill panels had to be repaired below the deck. To accomplish this, the contractor c u s t o m designed and built “hanging drop-in scaffolding” which allowed us flexibility and minimized interference with the public. This creative design supplied by our structural engineer allowed us to keep the only walkway open that allowed pedestrians access to the fishing pier and bait shop. Below the concrete deck supporting the restaurant, beams and columns had to be repaired and a cantilevered access slab had to be strengthened and repaired. During construction, all materials had to be hand carried and stored below the pier. Safety fence barriers were erected to protect the public while allowing them beach access to both sides of the pier. Daily cleanup and blackout due to the turtle mating season were also some of the challenges met by the team. This project was a great success thanks to the excellent relationship developed and the cooperation given by the city personnel involved and our team of dedicated workers. The repair of this 840-foot-long pier which juts out into the Atlantic Ocean posed some major challenges. Not only did the beams supporting the wood deck of

the fishing pier need to be repaired with no viable floating platform available, but the restaurant at the west end of the pier needed to remain open for business. Additionally, the fishing pier, east of the restaurant, needed to be accessible to the public 24/7.
