The modern Olympic Games have been an important venue in which national objec- tives as well as the concepts of race, gender, beauty, citizenship and health are materialized and disseminated in the form of spectacle. This seminar explores the visual politics of the Olympic Games held in Tokyo (1964), Seoul (1988), Beijing (2008), Pyeongchang (2018) and Tokyo (2020). Through the examination of Olym- pic Games ceremonies, posters, monu- ments and urban planning within the local- ized contexts of East Asian cities, we will give critical consideration to the politics of visual spectacle in the age of de-coloni- zation, globalization, digitalization and neo-liberal governance. This seminar has a Digital Humanities component. Students will create a spatial project to show how national narratives and visual data can be located geographi- cally.
