Semperoper Dresden

Dresden and its majestic Old Town are home to a cultural heritage of international renown. Every year hundreds of thousands of visitors are captivated by the precious paintings, prestigious orchestras and musical ensembles as well as impressive buildings from different eras. One of the most famous venues is also located in this city on the Elbe: the Semperoper, an opera house with a global reputation, a distinguished ensemble and many international guests. This is also the home of the Staatskapelle Dresden, one of the oldest orchestras in the world and thus steeped in tradition. Founded in 1548 by Elector Moritz of Saxony as a court orchestra, its list of former conductors includes Heinrich Schütz, Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wag-ner, who described the ensemble as his »mira-culous harp«. Operatic history has been written at the Semperoper: This is where Richard Wag-

ner gave the world premieres of »Rienzi«, »The Flying Dutchman« and »Tannhäuser«. There is also an indelible connection to Richard Strauss, nine of whose 15 operas were performed for the first time at the Semperoper, including »Salome«, »Der Rosenkavalier« and »Elektra«. In fact, Richard Strauss collaborated closely with the Staatskapelle for almost seventy years. In 2014, his 150th birthday was celebrated at the Semperoper with a special programme of events.

From the 2018 / 19 season, Peter Theiler is Artistic Director of the Saxon State Opera in Dresden. Together with his team and artistic directors, Peter Theiler understands music the-atre and ballet in all its facets as a living memory and vital expression of our contem-porary world. With celebrated conductors, stage directors and singers of the highest

calibre as well as international collaborations, the reputation of the Semperoper will continue to grow under his watch.

Christian Thielemann has been principal conductor of the Staatskapelle since the 2012/13 season. The Saxon State Opera Chorus is famous in Germany and elsewhere through its concerts and CD productions. Founded by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817, celebrations to mark its 200th anniversary were held in October 2017. Weber was also instrumental in creating a dedicated ballet company in Dresden. Founded in 1823, its first artistic heyday came in the 1920s, followed by many great choreographies after the Second World War under directors Tom Schilling, Harald Wandtke and Vladimir Derevianko.

Aaron S. Watkin has been the director of Sem-peroper Ballett since 2006. Today the company is renowned for the strength and versatility of its dancers, who perform a wide repertoire of classical and contemporary dance styles.

At the Semperoper, tradition and modernity have gone hand in hand for centuries. Des-troyed during the bombing of Dresden on 13 February 1945, the opera house was officially reopened 40 years later, on 13 February 1985.

The composer ensured plenty of vocal fireworks in his final masterpiece, presenting brilliant arias and exciting large choral scenes – and, famously, 19 high Cs in the tenor’s aria.

Conductor Christian ThielemannStaging Jens-Daniel Herzog

Premiere 8 May 2021Performances 14 & 16 May 2021

Richard Strauss’s last opera, »Capriccio«, transports us into a Rococo world, specifically to a castle near Paris where a poet and a composer are vying for the love of a countess. This is presented as an argument about the nature of opera. What is more important: the words or music? ... Strauss orchestrated this work, a self-confessed »Conversation Piece for Music«, for large orchestra. Under Christian Thielemann, the Staatskapelle Dresden will enchant listeners with an atmospheric chamber-like timbre in the famous string sextet and poetic moonlight music.

One of Giacomo Puccini’s most colourful operas, »Turandot« features a uniquely exotic score, which makes use of original Chinese melodies. The story of Princess Turandot, who demands that any suitor solve three ridd-les, alternates between the image of a distant fairytale world with bizarre characters and the exposure of a cruel society where despotism and bondage prevail. Only the unknown Prince Calaf succeeds in the impossible. His aria »Nessun dorma« (Let no one sleep!) has become one of the best-known in the entire Italian operatic literature.

Performances 27, 30 Jun & 4 Jul 2021

When Octavian delivers a silver engagement rose to Sophie on behalf of the aged fortune-hunter Baron Ochs, the young couple fall in love. For the Marschallin this blossoming rela-tionship means the loss of her younger lover Octavian, for Sophie social advancement and for Ochs a great humiliation. Hardly any opera is more familiar to Semperoper audiences than the bittersweet comedy »Der Rosenkavalier« by Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal, which premiered here in 1911.

He resolves to accompany Cas-par into the Wolf’s Glen to cast the magic bul-lets with which he hopes to win the hand of his Agathe at the prize shooting. This perhaps most romantic of German operas portrays not only the fate of a man driven to extremes by the fear of failure, but also a society which has lost its bearings and seeks stability. Musical Director Johannes FritzschStaging Jens-Daniel Herzog

Performances 22, 27, 30 May & 8 Jun 2021

To celebrate his engagement to the young Gret-chen, the village schoolmaster Baculus shoots what seems to be a roe deer on the lands of Count Eberbach. Yet this act of poaching could well be his undoing … Lortzing’s comic opera is a classic satire, a charming tale of mistaken identities that pokes fun at middle-class vanities and hollow values. Yet all the foibles and mistakes are so wonderfully human that we cannot take offence, but rather are forced to laugh at ourselves.

Based on the story of the Babylo-nian king Nabucco, his power-hungry daughter Abigaille and the subjugated people of the Isra-elites, the opera, premiered in 1842, tells of freedom, faith and human hubris. »Nabucco« is one of Verdi’s most popular operas, not least thanks to the Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves, »Va, pensiero, sull’ali dorate«.

In 2021 Willy Decker’s production of »Der Ring des Nibelungen« returns to the stage of the Semperoper Dresden. Principal Conductor Christian Thielemann, an acclaimed Wagner specialist, will direct the Dresden Staatskapelle, whom Richard Wagner called his »miraculous harp«, in this psychologically penetrating and musically explosive drama of gods and men. It was during his tenure as the Saxon court’s Kapellmeister that Richard Wagner decided to compose a work around the Nibelungen legend, and indeed the first reading of the draft libretto was held in Dresden. Intending to write a great opera about the hero Siegfried, Wagner ended up creating a tetralogy consisting of a preliminary evening and three days. The complete cycle was premiered in 1876 in the Festspielhaus in Bayreuth, specially built for this magnum opus.Aided by a fabulous ensemble of singers, Willy Decker’s production places the battle for the power of the ring within a theatre, which becomes the backdrop for the demise of the gods and the rise of man. Thereby, the boundary between stage and reality becomes ever more blurred. This is a pow-erful interpretation of Wagner’s music drama, featuring heartrending characters and fantastic images.

In »Plot Point« Crystal Pite, one of the leading choreographers of the present day, is inspired by the film score of »Psycho« to shed light on the nature of storytelling. With wonderfully descrip-tive physical vocabulary, the choreographer sends the bon vivant Peer Gynt, who certainly shows parallels to Inger’s own life, on a turbulent journey. Aimlessly dancing through life, at times stumbling, he finds himself in stran-gely surreal situations, only to finally arrive back in his homeland and realize: Happiness is so close at hand.

Tchaikovsky’s »The Nutcracker« is as much a part of Christmas as Dresden Stollen. Given a nutcracker on Christmas Eve, Marie quickly takes a shine to the wooden fi gure. Soon, how-ever, a troop of belligerent mice bring danger. Yet it seems as if the nutcracker has come to life. With her new friend, the girl embarks on a jour-ney through a land of sweet dreams, but also into adulthood.

Choreography Alexander EkmanMusic Mikael Karlsson

Performances 22 Mar & 1, 6, 8 Apr 2021

The cow is back! With his not entirely serious homage to a cow, or better to the attitude to life of a cow, the Swedish choreographer Alexander Ekmann 2016 amazed audiences and critics alike. Dispensing with a standard narrative, he grabs the viewer’s attention in abstract choreographic situations that delve into new worlds and, above all, unexpected images. – A fascinating piece of dance that includes all arts! Ekmann was awarded for this the theatre prize DER FAUST 2016.

Aaron S. Watkin’s production of »La Bayadère« – one of the greatest classical ballets of our time – is based on the traditional version by Marius Petipa. Set in ancient India, this archetypal romantic story tells of love, jealousy, intrigue, murder and revenge between Nikiya, a temple dancer, her rival, the Rajah’s daughter Hamsatti, and Solor, a noble warrior ardently loved by both women. This passionate exotic tale also includes »The Kingdom of the Shades« – one of the most famous scenes in all of classical ballet.

They are archetypal figures of classical ballet: the enchanted swan princess Odette and her swan maidens. As always, we hear the tale of Odette and Prince Siegfried, the battle of good against evil. Only a vow of true love can free Odette from her swan-like state, to which she has been con-demned by the magician Rotbart. And so, the princess hopes to gain her prince’s love.

Alongside George Balanchine’s formalistic yet virtuoso classic »Stravinsky Violin Concerto« (1972), two further modern, highly aesthetic and neo-classical languages of movement can be experienced in »Kleines Requiem« (1996), a virtuoso and visually powerful creation by the Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen, and David Dawson‘s intensive dance interpretation of Richard Strauss‘ »Four Last Songs«, created for the Semperoper Ballet in the 2019/20 season.

HERBERT BLOMSTEDT

Conductor Laureate

Founded by Moritz, Elector of Saxony, in 1548, the Staatskapelle Dresden is one of the oldest orchestras in the world and thus stee-ped in tradition.

Over its long history many distinguished conductors and internationally celebrated instrumentalists have left their mark on this one-time court orchestra. Previous directors include Heinrich Schütz, Johann Adolf Hasse, Carl Maria von Weber and Richard Wagner, who called the ensemble his »miraculous harp«. Prominent conductors of the last 100 years include Ernst von Schuch, Fritz Reiner, Fritz Busch, Karl Böhm, Joseph Keilberth, Rudolf Kempe, Otmar Suitner, Kurt Sander-ling, Herbert Blomstedt and Giuseppe Sino-poli. From 2002 the orchestra was led by Bernard Haitink (until 2004) followed by Fabio Luisi (2007-2010). Since the 2012/13 season, Christian Thielemann has been prin-cipal conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden. In May 2016, Herbert Blomstedt, a former principal conductor of long standing, was appointed the orchestra’s conductor laureate. The only previous titleholder, from 1990 until his death in 2013, was Sir Colin Davis. Myung-Whun Chung has been principal guest conductor since the 2012/13 season.

Richard Strauss and the Staatskapelle were closely linked for more than sixty years. Nine of the composer’s operas were premie-red in Dresden, including »Salome«, »Elektra« and »Der Rosenkavalier«, while Strauss’s »Alpine Symphony« was dedicated to the orchestra. Countless other famous composers have written works either premiered by or dedicated to the orchestra. In 2007 the Staats-kapelle reaffirmed this tradition by introdu-cing the annual position of »Capell-Composi-teur«, subsequently held by composers such as Hans Werner Henze, Wolfgang Rihm, Sofia Gubaidulina, Arvo Pärt and Peter Eötvös.

The Staatskapelle’s home is the Semper-oper, where it performs around 260 operas and ballets each season. In addition, the ensemble presents another 50 symphonic and chamber concerts as well as a concert series held in Dresden’s Frauenkirche.

As one of the world’s most celebrated sym-phony orchestras, the Staatskapelle regularly travels abroad to the foremost classical venues. Since 2013 it has been the resident orchestra of the Salzburg Easter Festival, whose artistic director is Christian Thielemann.

The Staatskapelle also supports the local region: Since October 2008 it has been the patron orchestra of Meetingpoint Music Messiaen in the double city of Görlitz / Zgor-zelec. And in September 2010 the orchestra helped found the International Shostakovich Festival in Gohrisch (Saxon Switzerland), which is the only such annual event entirely dedicated to the music and life of Dmitri Shostakovich.

In Brussels in 2007 the Staatskapelle became the first – and so far only – orchestra to be awarded the »European Prize for the Pre-servation of the World’s Musical Heritage«.

Volkswagen is a partner of the Staatskapelle Dresden.

Christian ThielemannPrincipal Conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden

Since the 2012 / 13 season Christian Thielemann is the principal conductor of the Staatskapelle Dresden. Following engagements at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, in Gelsenkirchen, Karlsruhe, Hanover and Dusseldorf, he became Generalmusikdirektor in Nuremberg in 1988. In 1997 he returned to his hometown of Berlin to direct the Deutsche Oper until 2004, when he became music director of the Munich Philharmonic, a post he occupied until 2011. In addition to his current position in Dresden, Thielemann has been artistic director of the Salzburg Easter Festival (where the Staatskapelle is resident orchestra) since 2013.

In recent seasons Christian Thielemann has contributed greatly to the birthday cele-brations for Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. But he has also conducted the works of diverse composers ranging from Bach to Henze, Rihm and Gubaidulina, in Dresden and on tour. In the Semperoper he has con-ducted new productions of »Manon Lescaut«, »Simon Boccanegra«, »Elektra« and »Der Freischütz« as well as two complete cycles of Wagner’s »Ring des Nibelungen« in early 2018. At the Salzburg Easter Festival he has conducted »Parsifal«, »Arabella«, the operatic double-bill »Cavalleria rusticana« / »Pagliacci« as well as »Otello«, »Die Walküre«, »Tosca« and »Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg«.

Christian Thielemann maintains close ties to the Berlin Philharmonic as well as the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, whose New Year’s Concert he conducted in 2019. Fol-lowing his debut at the Bayreuth Festival in 2000, he has returned every year to thrill audiences with benchmark interpretations, first as musical advisor for five years and,

since 2015, as the festival’s music director. In addition, he has been invited to conduct the great orchestras of Amsterdam, London, New York, Chicago and Philadelphia, and has per-formed in Israel, Japan and China.

As a UNITEL exclusive artist, Christian Thielemann has a large catalogue of recor-dings. His most recent projects with the Staatskapelle include the complete symphonies of Anton Bruckner, Johannes Brahms and Robert Schumann as well as the operas »Der Freischütz«, »Cavalleria rusticana«/»Pagliacci«, »Elektra«, »Die Walküre« and »Lohengrin«, on CD or DVD. In addition to symphonic works by Beethoven, Liszt, Bruckner, Reger, Pfitzner and Busoni, he has recorded various New Year’s Eve concerts for DVD release with the Staatskapelle Dresden. Together with the Vienna Philharmonic, he has recorded a complete set of Beethoven’s symphonies.

Christian Thielemann is an honorary mem-ber of London’s Royal Academy of Music and holds honorary doctorates from the Franz Liszt College of Music in Weimar and the Catholic University of Leuven, Belgium. In May 2015 he was awarded the Richard Wagner Prize of the Richard Wagner Society of Leipzig, and in October 2016 received the Prize of the Sem-peroper Foundation. Christian Thielemann is the patron of the Richard-Wagner-Stätten in Graupa as well as the 49th International Youth Music Competition »jugend creativ« of the Volksbank and Raiffeisenbank.

2020 / 21 Season

ROLANDO VILLAZÓNRolando Villazón has established himself as one of today’s leading te-nors through his uniquely captivating performances at the world’s fore-most opera houses and concert halls. He is also one of the most versatile of artists: Alongside his stage career, he is also known through his work as a director, writer and TV personality. In Dresden he can again be enjoyed as a singer, performing the role of Orfeo in the Semperoper.

KRASSIMIRA STOYANOVAAlthough Krassimira Stoyanova has risen to the top of the operatic world since her international debut in Vien-na in 1998, taking her place among the list of legendary Bulgarian sin-gers, the soprano still has her feet firmly on the ground. Dresden au-diences can now look forward to her appearance as the Countess in Ri-chard Strauss’s »Capriccio« conduc-ted by Christian Thielemann.

DMITRY SEMIONOVFormer principal dancer of the Semperoper Ballett, Dmitry Semi-onov, is now a guest artist at lea-ding companies worldwide, inclu-ding St. Peterburg’s Mikhailovsky Theatre, the Shanghai Ballet, the Hong Kong Ballet, the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb and the Slovak National Theatre in Bratis-lava. As Siegfried in »Swan Lake« he will return to the Semperoper for several performances.

ANJA HARTEROSCritics and audiences are enthralled wherever Anja Harteros appears. This »soprano for the ages« has enjo-yed worldwide success since the be-ginning of her international career in 1999. The celebrated singer now re-turns to Dresden’s opera house to perform a song recital as well as the role of Floria Tosca.

MICHAEL VOLLENamed »Singer of the Year« on se-veral occasions by the classical ma-gazine »Opernwelt«, Michael Volle has also received the German Thea-tre Prize »Der Faust«. He regularly appears at renowned opera houses and important festivals to sing the great baritone roles of Mozart, Verdi and Puccini as well as Wagner and Strauss. In this return to the Sem-peroper, he will interpret the role of Wotan.

CHRISTA MAYERAttracted to roles of great emotional depth, Mayer feels at home in the works of Richard Wagner as well as those of Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Strauss. The contralto/mezzo-sopra-no is greatly admired by opera con-noisseurs and audiences for her ver-satility and powers of expression. A member of the Semperoper ensemb-le since 2001, she excels in diverse roles: This season in Dresden she can be heard as Fricka, Maddalena and Suzuki.

RENÉ PAPEA former chorister of Dresden’s Kreuz-chor, today René Pape appears on all the world’s top stages as Boris Godu-nov, Orest, Wotan, King Marke or Me-fistofele. Born in Dresden, the bass can once again be heard at the Sempero-per performing one of the great male roles, namely the mighty Sarastro in Mozart’s opera »The Magic Flute« and as Philip in »Don Carlo«.

ANNE SCHWANEWILMSWith her remarkable voice and appea-rance, the soprano was predestined to play Wagnerian heroines. Luckily for the opera world, however, Anne Schwanewilms confidently decided to abandon this artistic straitjacket early on. She has gone on to garner many accolades, not least for her interpreta-tions of Strauss. In Dresden she will enthral audiences as the Marschallin in Strauss’s »Rosenkavalier« as well as the title role in Offenbach’s »The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein«.

MARCELO GOMESThis incredible dancer has been invited to perform as a guest artist by many in-ternational dance festivals and ballet companies such as the Mariinsky Ballet, the Bolshoi Ballet, London’s Royal Bal-let, the Dutch National Ballet and many others. After making his debut appear-ance at the Semperoper in the 2018/19 season, Marcelo Gomes has now been engaged as principal soloist and ballet master of the Semperoper Ballett. He will perform lead roles in »La Bayadère«, »Vier letzte Lieder«, »Serenade«, »The Nutcracker« and »Swan Lake«.

ANGELA GHEORGHIUAngela Gheorghiu’s rise to interna-tional fame began with her 1992 debut at London’s Royal Opera House, performing Mimì in »La bohème«. Meanwhile she is at home on all the world’s great operatic sta-ges, regularly singing the title role of »Tosca« at New York’s Met, London’s Royal Opera House, the Vienna Opera and the Berlin State Opera. And it is with this role that she returns to the Semperoper.

STEPHEN GOULDThis season, heroic tenor Stephen Gould returns to the Semperoper as Siegfried. A popular guest artist in Dresden, the American is invited to sing at the world’s leading opera houses and concert halls. In recent years, this brilliant artist has ap-peared on the Semperoper stage as Florestan (»Fidelio«), Tristan (»Tris-tan und Isolde«) and Tannhäuser, roles which have brought acclaim from audiences and critics alike.

GEORG ZEPPENFELDGeorg Zeppenfeld is not only a cele-brated performer in Bayreuth and the Salzburg Easter Festival, but also in his musical home, the Semper-oper Dresden. Here in October 2015 the bass was awarded the honorary title Kammersänger for his outstan-ding artistic achievements. In the 2020 / 21 season he can be heard in Dresden performing the roles of Hunding, Sarastro, Gesler, Zaccaria and La Roche.

PAVOL BRESLIKPavol Breslik’s career began in 2005 when he was named »Young Singer of the Year« by a survey of critics conducted by Opernwelt magazine. Since 2006 the tenor has worked as a freelance singer at the Metropoli-tan Opera in New York as well as the major European opera houses and festivals. He returns to the Semper-oper as Hans in »The Bartered Bride« and makes his role debut as Duca di Mantova in »Rigoletto«.

MARIA KOCHETKOVAToday a successful freelance dancer, Maria Kochetkova has made many international guest appearances at renowned companies in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Rome, Tokyo, Milan and elsewhere. After making her house and role debut as Giselle in the Semperoper in October 2019, the dancer returns to Dresden as a guest artist to perform Odette / Odile in »Swan Lake«.
