Suzuki Strings ProgramThe Suzuki method of instruction is based on the philosophy and teaching of the late Japanese educator Dr. Shinichi Suzuki where young children learn to play the violin, viola, or cello the same way they learn to speak - by listening, imitating, and repeating sounds. Just as children learn to read after they learn to speak, Suzuki students learn note-reading after developing aural skills and proper instrument posture. The parent attends lessons and group classes with the child, learns to play the instrument, and becomes the “home teacher.” Suzuki students listen to the recorded repertoire, attend weekly individual lessons, participate in bimonthly group classes, and spend time reviewing and polishing skills along with learning new material. Students participate in a variety of performance opportunities.

InstrumentsStudents enrolled in the Suzuki program will need their own instrument, and as “home teacher” the Suzuki parent will need his/her own violin/viola. (Cello parents will use their child’s instrument.) To ensure proper size and quality, please do not rent or purchase an instrument until you have been placed in the program and have consulted with your child’s teacher.

Suzuki Workshop WeekendA vital part of the Suzuki program is the biennial Suzuki Workshop Week-end - an intensive, two-day workshop for Suzuki violin, viola and cello students age 4 and up that brings nationally recognized teachers and clinicians to the Community Music School.

Suzuki EnsembleThe Suzuki Ensemble is comprised of students who have advanced to the highest level of accomplishment within the CMS Suzuki Program. The Suzuki Ensemble has performed in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin, and in 2006 performed in Europe. The ensemble has performed in elementary schools, retirement communities, on television, at Powell Symphony Hall, and at the Fox Theater with The Piano Guys and with Time for Three.

The Suzuki program has given my daughter a new skill that gives her confidence and joy. She is learning that hard work and practice produces beautiful results. Her teacher is so patient with her and meets her at her level to help her learn in a way that is most effective for her. We are so fortunate to have found a program where we can bond together and make lasting memories. —CMS parent
