Foreword My professional journey started in 2006, with Microsoft .NET and Dynamics CRM 3.0, along with Microsoft Office SharePoint Services. During version 3.0 of the Dynamics CRM days, plugins were called callout, there was a Windows-based tool for authoring the workflows installed on the server (with only admins having access to it), no multi-organization, and no multi-currency support.

Over the years, however, the product has evolved. It’s seen tremendous growth with each subsequent version, from being limited to on-premise only and supported by Internet Explorer, to moving to the cloud, with all major browsers and devices supported. It’s become incredibly powerful thanks to its new home, Power Platform, which allows seamless integration with different tools like Power BI, Power Automate, PowerApps Portals, Power Apps, and Power Virtual Agents.

Different modules that were once part of Dynamics CRM are now available as separate apps, including Dynamics 365 Sales, Dynamics 365 Customer Service, Dynamics 365 Marketing, and Dynamics 365 Field Service, giving customers the option to choose the service they need.

Today, Dynamics 365 is a leading product in cloud-based ERP, and its growth has fueled the development of a strong partner ecosystem of sales, consulting, development, and support professionals, led and guided by ever-increasing Power Platform and Dynamics 365 communities.

While I’m talking about the Dynamics community - this has also grown exponentially alongside the product. Up until Dynamics CRM 4.0, CRM professionals were mostly using the Stunnware Tools, which made it easy to work with the CRM. There were very few community blogs at that time, and Microsoft’s social forum was the main place to seek support from Dynamics experts.

By 2010, when I joined Microsoft at Hyderabad, CRM 2011 beta was released. I remember trying to add a ribbon button, but it took hours to understand the new structure, i.e., RibbonDiffXML, and then implement it. But a few months later, we had wonderful community tools like Ribbon Workbench and Visual Ribbon Editor that provided GUI to work with ribbon, cutting down the implementation time from hours to just a few minutes.

We now have XrmToolBox, which is home to more than 200 different plugins developed by Dynamics 365 Experts, empowering Dynamics 365 consultants to work more efficiently, and providing capabilities not available out of the box in the product. There is also the PCF Gallery, which is a collection of numerous reusable controls developed by different authors, based on the innovative PowerApps Component Framework, which has got the developer community very excited.

We also have community events, both physical and virtual, held all year round, where experts in Dynamics share their

knowledge and experience. Alongside these events, you’ll also find a wide range of blogs, YouTube channels, training websites, and LinkedIn and Facebook groups, helping to develop the global Dynamics 365 community.

There’s also Microsoft’s Dynamics 365 Community, the official place for experts and peers to connect through forums, blogs, webinars, videos, and events. Professionals can also earn badges and recognition for their contributions. The Microsoft Most Valuable Professionals (MVP) award is an opportunity for experts, who are passionately sharing their knowledge with the community, to be recognized by Microsoft and their peers.

Looking ahead, one radical change in the product’s direction is an increased focus to the cloud rather than on-premise, with new features added continuously as part of two major releases every year. Considering the unfortunate COVID-19 situation, this will be the time that many organizations migrate to Dynamics 365 from on-premise. This could help them to leverage the latest infrastructure and innovative services offered, save on operational costs, and deliver products and services faster.

This is the right time to be a Dynamics 365 professional. If you are just starting out or you’re an existing professional, we can all keep growing rapidly along with the Dynamics 365 product and the Power Platform.

Survey methodologyThis salary survey report is based on over 239,000 data points, including self-reported information from Microsoft Dynamics professionals from around the world prior to and during the coronavirus outbreak in early 2020. Respondents span a wide range of personal and professional backgrounds, making it a balanced representation of the Microsoft Dynamics community.

Each survey response has been validated using robust statistical analysis and automated data validation rules in order to be included in the final results set. Any responses that do not pass our validation rules, or that are deemed questionable, incomplete, or duplicate, were removed from the analysis to provide more meaningful results.

Salary information from survey responses was aggregated and anonymized and is included solely for benchmarking purposes. No information given is in connection with any individual role or hiring decision.

The following should be taken into account when interpreting the data in this report:• Not all percentages add up to 100%

due to some questions having multiple choice answers.

• For single choice questions, answers are rounded so not all responses will total 100%.

• Findings based on a small sample of results (i.e., under 5%) should be taken as indicative only.

• For questions that asked for an open (qualitative) response, there may be some overlap in the quotes used.

• Themes identified when grouping qualitative responses are displayed in no particular order of importance, and are purely representative of the answers given.

62% of those who believe that certifications make you more marketable hold a certification themselves.

Many people are using their time in lockdown or on furlough to advance their certifications, so next year we anticipate a further rise in the number of certified Microsoft Dynamics professionals.

Why do you believe that certifications make you more valuable to employers?

They’re evidence of a certain level of knowledge

“Certification can demonstrate a baseline knowledge of fundamentals in the specific area of study.”

End user, United States

They are a method for accessing Microsoft Dynamics knowledge

“Certification is a way of recognizing your learning and knowledge of the system.”

End user, Singapore

Globally recognized qualification

“Certifications are “worldwide”, so I am able to prove to partners worldwide that I am familiar with the product, and not just based on local references - this is important when you work in a small country with smaller enterprises which are not known worldwide. Certifications also mean that I am up to date with the technology because they usually track new versions of the system.”

Microsoft Partner, Croatia

They demonstrate a commitment to learning about Microsoft Dynamics

“They show that you are dedicated to continuous learning and that you actually know what you claim to know about the software.”

End user, United States

They represent a benchmark for employers

“It gives employers a formal way of evaluating candidates.”

Microsoft ISV, United Kingdom

They’re a requirement to become a Microsoft Gold or Silver Certified Partner

“Current certifications count toward a company getting Gold Partner status.”

Microsoft Partner, United Kingdom

They provide a method of staying up-to-date with Microsoft Dynamics

“They demonstrate the current understanding of the functionality, and its application in real-world scenarios.”

The impact of certification on salary28% of professionals with a certification experienced a pay rise after successfully completing their training.

To explore the Microsoft certifications that professionals believe are most likely to increase your earning potential, see page 26.

Unsurprisingly, permanent employees and those working for a partner are more likely to have received financial support from their employer to pay for their certifications.

One quick change that employers can make to help their workforce to upskill is to provide dedicated study time to allow their employees to complete their learning without the added stress of trying to manage their workload.

‘Other’ responses include having many years’ experience with Microsoft Dynamics so they’re unable to see the need in a certification, while other respondents tell us that their employer or role doesn’t require certifications.

Alongside salary, what is expected in the role, and working hours, employees will look at the benefits offered by a company when deciding whether this is an organization that they would like to join.

“If you're a hiring manager reviewing your staff perks, a good place to start is by asking, would the benefits attract you to the business? If the answer is no, then chances are, prospective candidates are unlikely to find them appealing either. The fact of the matter is, if you want to attract and retain the best talent - you have to invest in your employees”

Many candidates place a high value on a salary or 13th month pay bonus. A variety of bonus structures exist (e.g., discretionary or non-discretionary, awarded to individuals, teams or company-wide), but all types look to motivate and reward staff for their increased productivity and good performance.

The coronavirus pandemic has fundamentally changed the global approach to work and the workplace. Two of the top six perks are now offered as standard by many organizations: remote working and flexible working hours. What was once seen as a perk is now

mandatory for a lot of people working in countries currently easing out of lockdown.

Post COVID-19, will these initiatives continue?

With remote working and flexible hours now standard for many businesses, what else can companies offer employees to attract and retain the best talent?

86% of permanent employees tell us that salary aside, workplace benefits are important when deciding on whether to accept a job offer or not.

Our findings gathered before and during the first months of the coronavirus pandemic show that 25% of permanent Dynamics professionals worked from home at least one day a week, while 22% worked remotely full-time. However, 30% never worked from home and were possibly not offered home working as a benefit.

It will be interesting to see the long-lasting impact of the pandemic on remote working policies. Many companies switched from on-premise operations to remote workplaces in a matter of hours and days. Where there may once have been a resistance to change, there appears to now be an acceptance that remote working not only can work in theory but does work in practice. This could well result in a change in the number of days that professionals spend working remotely in the future.

Job satisfactionHow do our respondents rate their satisfaction with different aspects of their employment? Before the COVID-19 outbreak, many Microsoft Dynamics professionals were happy with aspects of their physical workplace, with 70% satisfied with their working location and 65% with the office environment. Given that many people have been required to work from home during the pandemic, and the possible implications this may have on future remote working, it will be interesting to see how this impacts on satisfaction ratings in our next salary survey.

Unfortunately, only 40% are satisfied with their training and development. Employees are an organization’s most valuable asset, so they should look to invest in employee development. By doing so, organizations can attract and retain the best talent, enhance their company’s reputation, and increase employees’ creativity and openness to innovation. It also helps an organization to look ahead by developing its staff into forward thinkers1.

What are your observations on ERP installations worldwide?

When talking about ERP generally, I can see several trends. The main part of a company's ERP installations are on-premise, with many moving workloads to the cloud and using IaaS technology. A growing number of businesses are embracing the cloud for their ERP systems, too.

Regarding Microsoft Dynamics ERP adoption, Finance & Operation and Dynamics 365 Business Central are the top choices nowadays. Finance & Operation is popular with the enterprise segment, but Dynamics 365 Business Central is making gains in this market too and is Microsoft's ERP with the greatest worldwide adoption. This is because the product is adaptable, quick to customize, and thanks to the power of SQL Server or the cloud, it can handle large installations without problems.

How are companies approaching business management through Dynamics 365?

Companies that have old ERP systems see Dynamics 365 Business Central as a modern ERP system that can be completely customizable in a reduced time, and they can easily recreate many processes where they've invested money in the past. The platform is also available on-premise, but if they decide to embrace the cloud in the future, they're ready to go without re-inventing the wheel.

Then there's the other side—businesses that want to move their legacy ERP system to the cloud in a fully PaaS or SaaS platform. They see Dynamics 365 Business Central

as the best cloud-ready ERP on the market, with the best cloud platform under the hood (Microsoft Azure), a vast integrated ecosystem (Azure Services, Microsoft Power Platform, Microsoft 365, CDS, etc.), and a platform (Azure SQL and Azure services in general) that can handle their future growth and workloads, which can scale infinitely.

What should businesses consider when transitioning to the cloud?

Initially, companies must convince themselves that the cloud is for them. Once they reach this conclusion, they can have all their ERP processes functioning correctly in the cloud without having to maintain a server platform and can reduce maintenance costs linked to infrastructure. And with Microsoft taking care of the platform's security aspects, the adoption of SaaS begins to look like the best route.

The process of moving to the cloud often involves reviewing internal procedures, reviewing your team's skillsets, and modernizing old internal applications. This helps the business to embrace a future-ready solution where they'll no longer have to worry about updates, patches, scalability, security, and platform availability.

My advice to companies that are considering modernizing their ERP is don't be skeptical about the cloud as this is the future. Having your business on a SaaS platform is an investment that will bring you significant advantages.

It's certainly a new standard, but it's the right path that guides you and your business towards the future.demiliani.com

Power PlatformMicrosoft’s Power Platform appears to be gaining traction with users; with 41% of respondents using PowerApps to build business apps, and 50% using Flow to integrate services and create custom workflows.

Dynamics AI and machine learning appsA little under a third (30%) of end users have plans to utilize Dynamics AI and machine learning apps like Sales Insights, Customer Insights, Customer Service Insights, Virtual Agent for Customer Service, Fraud Protection, and Connected Store.

Adoption of AI and machine learning in business software continues to grow, and this has really come to the fore during the pandemic, where artificial intelligence has played an integral role in tracking and forecasting outbreaks, and even diagnosing the virus in front-line workers. By upskilling in AI and machine learning, Dynamics professionals can ensure they stay competitive in an evolving labor market.

It takes commitment

and drive

It takes commitment and drive for an organization to instigate and follow a robust diversity program that deals with issues around inclusion and equality. Leadership buy-in, a commitment to resources, actionable goals, and measures of accountability are all important factors when enshrining this into organizational policy. This must also be effectively communicated to all staff, to ensure they understand the policy and their responsibilities as individuals within the organization.

• More open communication, including transparency around salaries

• Ensuring that pay is comparable with employees’ skills and experience

• Having more diversity in leadership roles, which includes encouraging more women into those roles

• Challenge discrimination based on age, race or sex

• Having a balanced hiring process that includes candidates from a diversity of backgrounds and sexual orientations

• Equal pay

Salary table methodology The salary table data was analyzed from multiple data points, including salary data self-reported from the salary survey respondents, and Microsoft Dynamics vacancies and placement data from roles registered with Nigel Frank in the last 12 months1.

The resulting data was then verified by our specialist teams, who apply their own insight and knowledge of the wider market to ensure that the information is accurate with respect to base salary, seniority or experience, job title, technology, and location.

1 June 2019 to May 2020 and prior to the full economic impact of the coronavirus

Salary TablesMicrosoft Dynamics salariesOur salary tables can help Microsoft Dynamics professionals to understand how much they should be earning and help employers or hiring managers to benchmark their team’s remuneration and set budgets for the next financial year. Certain markets will exhibit 10-15% variance due to differences in costs of living.

The salaries do not include bonuses and incentives. Additionally, multiple factors, including years of experience, specialized skills required, and the complexity of the role, affect where the salary for a particular role falls within the range.

Our salary tables take into account the effect that the coronavirus pandemic has had on the market. However, it’s full impact on salaries remains unclear and we will explore this in more detail in our next report, in 2021.

If you can’t find the salary for your region then please contact us for more information.
