This month long recognition pays tribute to gen-erations of Hispanic Americans who have posi-tively influenced and enriched our nation and so-ciety. It celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of American citizens whose ances-tors came from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America.

In conjunction with this observance, GM will cele-brate its recent selection as one of the 2020 Top 50 Best Companies for Latinas to Work for in the U.S. by LATINA Style Inc. This is one of the most prestigious diversity, equity and inclusion honors available to corporations and furthers our goal of becoming the most inclusive company in the world. Learn what activities are planned by our Hispanic and Latino colleagues by visiting Socrates and search “Hispanic Heritage Month”.

Celebrating Manufacturing Day – October 2 In this challenging year, Manufacturing Day will look very different. In conjunction with The Manu-facturing Institute, the workforce and education partner of the National Association of Manufac-turers, GM will host a virtual meeting for students and education leaders as we continue to demon-strate our commitment to building a diverse pipe-line of talent to electrify the future of manufactur-ing.

This family-friendly virtual event will offer an inside look at how manufacturing jobs are part of our electric future. GM manufacturing leaders will provide students a glimpse into our Orion Assem-bly plant, the first manufacturing facility in the world to produce ICE, electric and self-driving ve-hicles.

The virtual event will occur on Friday, October 2 from 11:30am-12:30pm EST. Registration will be available on the plant Facebook page and Socrates and you’re encouraged to share that in-formation with your school-aged children and their educators.

ICYMI: GM’s Technical Learning Uni-versity Provides Special Training

Recently, nine skilled trades electrician appren-tices from the GM Toledo transmission plant par-ticipated in upskill training at GM’s Technical Learning University (TLU). TLU’s goal is to improve the technical skills of GM’s skilled trades workers and salaried manufacturing engineers. TLU antici-pates training up to 3,600 U.S.-based workers on vehicle launches and other critical areas. See the full story on Socrates.

We are pleased to announce that the Hourly Ser-vice Award milestone gift catalog will reopen on October 1, 2020 for active employees who reached their 25 or 50 years of service between April 1, 2020 and September 30, 2020. Active em-ployees who reach their 25 or 50 years of service on or after October 1, 2020 will follow the standard process which includes the milestone gift catalog becoming available once an employee’s mile-stone award month begins. For example, if an ac-tive employee reaches their 25 years of service on October 15, 2020, the catalog will be available on October 1, 2020 to select their gift.

25 & 50 YEAR MILESTONE GIFTS

The 3rd shift Precision Sand Production and Main-tenance teams hosted a Focus Walk recognition event on September 23, 2020. Brian Clancy opened with a safety message about the family security app called Life360 that is available on the Google Play store. He said it was very helpful in keeping an eye on your kids, how fast they drive when in the car, etc. Other attendees comment-ed that they also use the app and really like it.The group leaders introduced their team leaders, who performed a high-level review of their team’s BPD board and discussed layered audit results. Each team leader also shared a problem solving form that the team is working on, plus a Continu-ous Improvement Project (CIP). The following proj-ects were covered:• Mod 4 Core (Production) – Team Leader Sue Cruz shared a project to add EPS buttons that would alert the truck drivers to deliver unloaders during a changeover. This project lead to reduc-tions in Waste of Waiting, Motion, and Material Movement.• Core Room Maintenance – Team Leader Darryl Myers shared his team’s project to add a hole to access the table carriage hydraulic hose fittings. The hose fittings were located behind a wall and had to be loosened ‘blind’. The hole gave the millwright access and a line of sight to be able to see the fitting they were removing. Overall, reduc-tion in Waste of Correction and Waiting have been realized. • Mod 3 Finishing (Production) – Team Leader Ed-die Curry showed his team’s project that had them working side by side with Maintenance to correct an issue when pallets exit the elevator at Op 125. The maintenance team found that the chain had worn and replaced it, along with other key components, and now Eddie doesn’t have to run upstairs as often to reset the elevator. Waste reduction for this project includes Waste of Cor-rection, Waiting, and Motion.Eddie Curry was also recognized by Brian Clancy for being a Safety Hero. He found a set of steps that were bent downward, causing a slip/trip haz-ard, and notified the Maintenance team during a layered audit, who then fixed the bad step. Each presenter was recognized for demonstrating the GM behaviors and use of the GMS tools with a certificate. The Staff thanked each presenter and team that participated today - your efforts truly help GM achieve not only our plant’s business ob-jectives, but to create customer enthusiasm.

International Coffee Day

OCTOBER STAR MEETING

SCHEDULE AND LOCATION

October 1 is annually celebrat-ed as International Coffee Day. The unofficial holiday cele-brates one of the most popular beverages in the world - coffee.

International Coffee Day is also known as Coffee Day or National Coffee Day.

The holiday also helps raise awareness about sus-tainable coffee cultivation and fair trade practic-es within the coffee industry. Before 2015 the day used to be celebrated on different dates in differ-ent countries.

Coffee is a drink made from the seeds or berries of the coffee plant. As a beverage, it has been en-joyed by people around the world for many cen-turies. Historians believe that coffee was first dis-covered in Ethiopia but was cultivated on a large scale and traded for the first time by the Arabs.

Religious CeremoniesInitially used for religious ceremonies and rituals, it became the beverage of choice in most house-holds in the Middle East, Persia and Africa by the 16th century and in Europe and the Americas by the 17th century.

An OffenseDespite its popularity today, coffee had its share of critics in history. Sultan Murad IV of the Ottoman Empire hated coffee so much that he made cof-fee drinking an offense punishable by death. In England, King Charles II fearing plots hatched over cups of coffee ordered all coffee houses shut.

Many countries celebrate their own version of a Coffee Day on different dates during the year. For example, Germany started Tag Des Kaffees in 2006 and celebrates it every year on the first Satur-day of September.

In the United States, National Coffee Day is cele-brated on September 29.

The holiday has unknown origins and is also some-times known as Coffee Day.

How to Celebrate?Whether your “cup of coffee” is a refreshing iced coffee or a piping hot Americano, Espresso, Café au Lait (coffee with milk), or plain black with no

sugar, International Coffee Day is a day to take some time off from your busy day to enjoy your favorite version of the beverage. Here are some ways to celebrate this day:•Many coffee shops around the world offer a free cup of coffee on International Coffee Day, so get in line and grab yourself a cup of free coffee.•Have coffee or coffee flavored food and bever-ages the whole day long. What about starting your day with coffee, have a coffee flavored yo-gurt for lunch and end the day with coffee crust-ed steak and a coffee flavored cake for dessert?•Coffee brings friends together. Set up coffee dates with your friends and spend quality time with them over a cup of coffee.•Join a coffee tasting event and learn about the art and science of growing and brewing coffee.•Try new flavors and types of coffee.
