Life in the USASaint John's High School is located in West Islip, New
York on Long Island to the east of New York City.
The suburban neighborhoods of West Islip are bordered by quiet
beaches, local shopping malls and a variety of restaurants. The sights
and sounds of Manhattan are only a one-hour train ride away.
I like to go to eat sushi in nearby towns. I love being able to go hang out in New York City during the weekends. I've gotten to see so many different places while studying here. I went on the American Experience trip to Boston, and it was such a great time to spend my weekend with friends in a new city.

The American Experience program has been great. I attended the Lunar New Year party, which has been my favorite event! It can give a feeling of being home when I am thousands of miles away from my family.

Host FamilyAt Saint John's, international students not only get a great education; they also find loving
homes and create lasting relationships with their host families. Your host family will play a large
part in your study abroad experience as they help provide and coordinate transportation,
share meals with you, support you in your English language learning, and so much more.
There’s no better way to fully experience American culture than living with
a host family, and the bonds you build will last long after you have finished
school. Many international students continue to keep in touch with their host
families for years after they graduate, and even return to visit for holidays!
Your Host Family Will: Help you adapt to American culture
Provide warm, nutritious meals
Provide a bedroom, internet, and study space
Support you in your academic pursuits
Strengthen your English skills
Help you get to know all the best spots in your new town
Provide and/or arrange transportation, within reason
Become a second family to you!
SafetySafety is always the #1 one priority for our students. All host families undergo a rigorous application and screening process to ensure they are a good candidate to host.
This includes:
• A comprehensive application
• Background check for every adult in the home
• An interview
• An in-person home check by an international staff team member
• Matching to student interest forms (completed after acceptance into program) to ensure a good fit for both student and host
My Host Family is very kind and they have given me great opportunities to have fun. During the spring break, we went on vacation to Florida together. In general, they took my to very good places in Long Island and showed me all of the nicest things to see in the area!

DiningWhether at the cafeteria lunch table or at your host family's
dinner table, meals are a wonderful chance for you to socialize
and learn something new about American culture!
At school, you will have lunch with classmates in the school cafeteria, where
you can purchase lunch or enjoy a packed lunch from home. Your host
family will provide you with breakfast and dinner, and lunch on weekends.

Typical American MealsFrom Mexican to Italian inspired cuisine, you are going to find a great
variety of flavors in the USA, but there are certain foods that are most
commonly found in each meal. Here are some you might see.
Food For Thought
Here are a few tips to consider when you fill up your plate in the USA!
1.TRY IT!
There are probably going to be many foods you come across that you don’t recognize. Try to be open to tasting them, regardless of how you think
they look, and you may find some new favorites!
2.SPEAK UP!
In the USA, conversation is an important part of meals, where everyone is welcome to talk and
laugh. Whether it’s at dinner with your host family or at the cafeteria lunch
table, don’t be afraid to share a story from your day, or your thoughts on a
conversation topic. It’s a great chance to practice your English!
3.SHARE A
FAVORITE RECIPE!You’ll get to enjoy lots of new
American foods, but meals are also a great way for you to share your own culture, too. Offer to teach
your host family how to make your favorite meal, or ask to host a “pot-
luck” dinner party with a couple new friends from school!
4.ASK QUESTIONS!
Meals are a great way to learn about American culture. Don’t recognize a food? Are your host family or friends using a word you don’t know? Don’t
be afraid to ask!
5.BE OPEN TO TRYING
NEW THINGS!Maybe you are used to eating dinner at 9pm, and your host family likes to eat at 6pm. Maybe you are used to having
different kinds of foods available at lunch than what your new school
cafeteria offers. It can be hard initially, but be open to the changes and you
will adjust well to your new life!
