July 25, 2019 1 1 The Spirit The Spirit Summer has a way of stagnating a bit. At first we are excited the kids are off, the vacations happen, we visit family, and all the rest. Then the dog days of summer come upon us. While I am no historian, nor astronomer, to explain the dog days of summer, I think it comes from the rising in the skies of Sirius which is called the “dog star.” The ancient Greeks and Romans connected this time with bad luck, mad dogs, drought, and probably what people would feel today if we didn’t have air conditioning. Summer stagnates when the temperatures get over 100 for days on end, and we just get tired. I realized 14 years ago that when these dog days of summer hit church, attendance goes down. Even those people who are in town are less likely to make it, maybe they simply do not want to get inside a hot car after the service. Sometimes church giving will stagnate a bit too. Yet we are still worshipping, still doing classes, still having groups meet, still doing the work in the summer months. Mother Hubbard’s is getting big groups, and we make sure we bring them indoors while they wait for food. We are talking about being a “cooling station” during the hottest days, ensuring that people who are in danger due to excessive heat have a place to be safe. So here are some things I would like to share, if you would please indulge me in this space this week. 1. Please make sure your giving is up to date! On top of that please make sure you have given to the capital campaign. It has stagnated at just over $77,000. Thank you also for all that you have already given! 2. Come to church when you are in town. We are still going through the beatitudes on Sunday mornings. Jesus’s message in them turns the world upside down. Perhaps we will hear things that are hard to hear, but that does not make them any less needed! 3. I want to remind you about Centering Prayer each Wednesday morning at 9am in the chapel. In a world of hustle and bustle where we rarely find the time to simply be, a time of silent prayer and meditation is revolutionary. I am not kidding at all in saying that. It is one of the most revolutionary things we can do in these days. Turning off our phones, sitting with our eyes closed, and calming our minds is radical. Remember that the root of radical is “rad.” Rad comes from the the Latin for “root.” We see it in a word like radish. To say that this kind of prayer time is radical means both revolutionary and helps root us in God. Join us if you can! 4. On Sunday the beatitude we are talking about is, “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” I do not believe in coincidence. Perhaps all of this talk of “Hey God, say ‘Cheese’” is to help us be pure in heart. I am not going to get into all of what I think Jesus meant by “pure in heart,” but I believe if we go out looking for God it certainly purifies our hearts. Maybe that is what Jesus meant when he said, “Seek and you will find.” So go find God! Use your phone when you see God somewhere, catch the moment and share it with the rest of us so we can all become more pure in heart. The dog days of summer will keep on going for awhile, but in the midst of them we do not have to stagnate at all. God is still moving, still whispering love songs in our dreams, and still calling us to love one another. Cannot wait to see you soon! Riding the wave of the Holy Spirit, Garrett

CAPITAL CAMPAIGN - OPPORTUNITY AWAITS YOU

Thanks to church members we have raised almost $78,000 for our capital campaign! Member support has made a huge difference in our ability to provide digital audio-visual technology that will promote better communications and the development of membership growth. As a member of the church family, you still have a chance to give back where it is needed most and build a support system through this campaign and beyond. Your support will contribute to touching lives and, in a manner of speaking, build the future of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church.

We are in the process of purchasing digital audio-visual equipment to Improve Communication in our Sanctuary:

Digital Projectors Speakers Microphones Amplification for Hearing Impaired Related Equipment

With additional funds we also plan to: Improve the Ministry Center Audio-Visual System and Improve the Parking Facilities

Meet our new Facilities Manager

Vance Balter is a native of Clarkston, Washington, and moved to Oregon where he grew up on a 50 acre ranch. He and his wife Michelle moved from Oregon to Washington State where he worked as a critical care paramedic for various fire and ambulance agencies, and Michelle as a nurse director. Vance and his wife have been married for 28 years. In 2014, Balter and his wife moved to Sutter, where he set up shop making furniture, and other things made in a woodshop. In 2017 Balter started a handyman business where he has worked since. Vance is happy to be here at St. Andrew, where he is looking forward to working for the church as the new facilities manager. As our new manager steps up to the job at hand, everyone at St. Andrew wishes former manager Brian Buchman well as he goes to be with his family. He truly made the church sparkle.
