Clinical Simulation CentresOur campuses in Melbourne, Geelong Waterfront and Warrnambool each have a Clinical Simulation Centre.

Purpose-built, flexible learning spaces and simulated clinical settings provide a safe, supportive and realistic environment for you to develop core clinical nursing and midwifery skills.

The simulated learning spaces replicate hospital and community environments with equipment such as high-fidelity human-patient simulators, bed spaces, hand basins, wall oxygen, suction and cardiac monitoring devices; they are well resourced with disposable dressing packs, injection equipment, monitoring equipment and other materials.

Learn in real-life settingsClinical placements commence in Trimester 1 of your first year and continue throughout your course in every trimester. They provide extensive opportunities to develop and consolidate your learning, and are undertaken in various metropolitan, regional and rural health care settings under the supervision of qualified practitioners.

The Bachelor of Nursing (Clinical Leadership) is the only undergraduate nursing course in Victoria with a focus on mentored clinical leadership. The course includes all Bachelor of Nursing core units, including the Leadership and Clinical Governance unit, together with an additional three core units that develop and enhance leadership potential through a focus on clinical nursing leadership and management, research and education.

This combined degree prepares you to complete the requirements to embark on a nursing career while developing knowledge of human behaviour, including understanding human personality, behaviour, emotion, underlying mental processes and the factors that lead people to differ in the way they think and behave. Armed with a wealth of skills and clinical practice, you will graduate work-ready and be eligible to pursue further study towards qualification as a registered psychologist. Complete two degrees in four years of full-time study.

Professional recognitionGraduates are eligible to apply for registration as a registered nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

The course also provides you with a three-year sequence in psychology that is recognised by the Psychology Board of Australia and accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC). This is particularly important if you wish to take on further study or career preparation in the area of psychology.

CareersGraduates work in areas such as mental health rehabilitation, youth work, careers counselling, community development and work/life counselling in addition to the many nursing roles in settings such as hospitals, homes, hospices, aged care, clinics, schools, universities, community health centres, government agencies and industries.

Pathway to psychology registrationIf you are interested in pursuing a professional career in psychology, you will need to complete an approved fourth year of study (such as Deakin’s Graduate Diploma of Psychology or an Honours in Psychology course). After this, you may apply for provisional registration with the Psychology Board of Australia and seek associate membership of the Australian Psychological Society.

In order to gain full registration, provisional psychologists must then complete either two years of supervised practice, or postgraduate study, such as a Master of Psychology, Doctor of Psychology or a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) (with supervised practice completed outside the degree).

In addition to the specialised skills and knowledge acquired through our Bachelor of Nursing degree, this combined degree also gives you specialised education in public health and health promotion. Public health is the organised response by society to protect and promote health and prevent disability.

By looking at the patterns of health and disease, public health focuses on the health of populations, rather than at the level of the individual. Health promotion is about working with people to improve their health and creating environments that support health – be they environmental, legal, physical, economic or social.

Professional recognitionThis course fulfils the registration standards for registered nurse of the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

CareersPublic health and health promotion are growing areas of employment in Australia and around the world. Upon completion of this combined course you will be qualified to work in areas such as health education, human services and health policy development and implementation, in addition to pursuing roles as a registered nurse in a range of work areas. Your knowledge of the social and environmental factors that affect the health of individuals and populations prepares you for a career in a range of clinical and community settings, such as public health, schools, rehabilitation, health education, voluntary organisations, patient support agencies or working abroad.

Work experienceFrom Trimester 1 of your first year of study you start clinical placements, allowing you to develop clinical skills under the supervision of registered nurses and enabling you to experience working in multidisciplinary health care teams. In addition, a Public Health and Health Promotion Practicum unit provides an in-depth working understanding of public health and health promotion principles and approaches in the field.

Entry for enrolled nursesEnrolled nurses who hold a Diploma of Nursing and are eligible to be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia can be granted credit for prior learning for up to 8 credit points in the Bachelor of Nursing, or up to 5 credit points in the combined degrees.

For enrolled nurses who do not hold a Diploma of Nursing, yet are eligible to be registered with the NMBA, CPL will be assessed on an individual basis.

As CPL is spread across the three years of the course, students have a reduced study load for the duration of the course. CPL is granted for Trimester 1 of the course and studies commence in July (Trimester 2) or November (Trimester 3) of the first year.

Students who elect to accept CPL for any unit must ensure they have achieved the intended learning outcomes for that unit and are current in that knowledge and clinical skill.

Enrolled nurses wishing to commence one of our nursing degrees can apply via VTAC for either early round (November) or main round (January) VTAC selection for commencement in Trimester 2.

Enrolled nurses may also apply for Trimester 2 or 3 commencement by direct applications via the applicant portal at https://applicantportal.deakin.edu.au.

Understand the entry and documentation requirementsMake sure you understand the entry requirements for your chosen course by reading the course page carefully (online at deakin.edu.au/course or in this booklet). For recent secondary education applicants, in addition to the listed ATAR, some courses may require you to have studied a prerequisite subject/s, while others may also require you to provide extra materials, such as a portfolio or personal statement.

Selection requirements for non-Year 12 applicants may include personal statement, entrance tests as specified, e.g. STAT (Special Tertiary Admissions Test), or the non-academic assessment (for all applicants to teaching courses), supplementary information form, audition, interview or folio presentation.
