Experiential learning to make you job readyA distinctive feature of our law programs is our focus on experiential learning. The legal profession is highly commercialised and lawyers are increasingly required to provide clients with practical, commercial advice (in addition to pure legal advice). Our focus on experiential education builds these skills in addition to disciplinary knowledge, giving you an edge upon graduation.

Deakin Law ClinicDeakin Law Clinic provides legal advice and assistance to eligible clients in the following areas:

• Civil and commercial law (Civil and Commercial Practice Group)• Criminal law (Criminal Law Practice Group)• Employment law (Employment Law Practice Group)• Family law (Family Law Practice Group)• Venture law (Venture Law Information Service).

Students interview real clients under the supervision of qualified solicitors, conduct research on legal issues and offer advice where appropriate. Students also have the opportunity to attend court proceedings in some instances. These clinical programs empower students to expand on the rigorous academic knowledge and the critical and reflective skills they gain during their degree.

Deakin Legal Internship ProgramStudents can also access internship placements at many law firms, legal aid providers and government offices for credit as part of their Deakin Law School experience. Students develop the practical legal skills and experience that employers look for and graduate work-ready into a competitive employment market.

Vis Moot international experienceThe Vis Moot and the Vis (East) Moot run annually in Vienna and Hong Kong. Deakin Law School is one of only a few schools that have participated in the Vis and Vis (East) Moot every year since their inception.

It is a mock-arbitration competition where students:

• research two areas of international commercial law (international commercial arbitration and the international sale of goods) in detail and then apply the law to a hypothetical case

• prepare two sets of written legal arguments (one for each side in the dispute)• prepare for the oral rounds in Hong Kong and Vienna – competing against law

schools from around the world just before Easter each year.

Not only will you earn a credit point in International Litigation and Dispute Settlement, but you’ll also be involved in one of the most highly regarded competitions in the profession, which is great for your future career.

In the 2017 competition, the Deakin Law School team placed number one, out of the 125 participating teams, at the end of the general rounds.

D312 C B WF ^ 5 T1, T2

A law degree, especially when combined with another degree such as arts, is a qualification that offers diverse career opportunities. As an alternative to practising as a lawyer, you may enter many areas of work including business and management roles in a wide range of organisations and government services, and in industrial relations. You may find a role in research, public administration, diplomatic service, the media, legal aid, law reform, or teaching in schools or universities.

^ Students enrolled at the Geelong Waterfront Campus will be required to undertake some units at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Laws D322 C B WF WB 5 T1, T2#, T3§

As an alternative to practising as a barrister or solicitor, you may pursue a career in business and management in a wide range of organisations, government services, industrial relations, research, public administration, diplomatic service, legal aid, the media, law reform or teaching in universities. Broad career paths based on the study of selected commerce units create job prospects ranging from being a professional accountant, IT and systems professional, economist, financial planner, human resources manager, manager, social and economic policy developer, international trade officer and marketing assistant/manager.

As a graduate you can choose to pursue a career as a lawyer, or to take on business and management roles in a range of corporate and private organisations and government agencies. Opportunities exist within state and federal police, ASIO (Australia’s national security service) and various correctional services, community services and private security industries.

Completing this combined degree enables you to develop an understanding of international forces shaping government, business and community life in Australia; analyse and interpret these forces; develop cross-cultural competencies through an internationally oriented curriculum; participate in an international study experience; and learn the principles of the internationalisation of the law.

^ Students enrolled at the Geelong Waterfront Campus will be required to undertake some units at the Geelong Waurn Ponds Campus.

In addition to providing an innovative and distinctive legal education, the property and real estate component of the course produces highly skilled professionals who are able to enter the workforce with a professionally recognised qualification and are eligible for registration as a Certified Practising Valuer.

Bachelor of Science/Bachelor of Laws D331 B 5 T1, T2

This combined course is an excellent way to enhance your understanding of the context in which the law operates. As an alternative to practising as a barrister or solicitor, you may choose to pursue a career in business and management roles in a wide range of organisations, government services, industrial relations, research, public administration, diplomatic service, the media, legal aid, law reform or teaching either in schools or universities.
