2019 MORGAN PARK SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL GLEN COVE, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 60th Annual Morgan Park Summer Music Festival! This is a big year for us and we look forward to celebrating it with you.

This is going to be a great season. We start on June 30th with An Evening of Italian Opera and end on August 25th with A Band Called Honalee performing the songs of Peter, Paul and Mary and other music of the 60s.

This year, Morgan Park Summer Music Festival is presenting the City of Glen Cove’s 4th of July concert – Richie Cannata and the Lords of 52nd Street will play all the great songs of Billy Joel. Then three days later, Strawberry Fields performs a tribute to the Beatles on what will be Ringo Starr’s 79th birthday!

This season’s concerts also include the music of Motown, Caribbean Reggae, Johnny Cash, Queen and other rock greats. David Stewart Wiley, conducting Orchestra Long Island, will entertain us with an evening of classics from Broadway, Hollywood, jazz and opera and Plaza Productions returns to Morgan Park to perform Mame.

I would like to thank all our generous supporters for making it possible for us to hold the Festival year after year. This year, I offer a special thanks to RXR/Garvies Point – our 2019 Title Sponsor. You are all good friends and we are grateful for your support.

Our 60 years of successfully presenting professional, uplifting entertainment was only possible because of the vision and hard work of so many civic minded volunteers, donors and friends. It is my great honor to chair this committee of so many dedicated to the common good and I am especially grateful for the opportunity to carry on the legacy of my father, mother and Mrs. Pratt.

So sit back, relax and enjoy a delightful evening of musical entertainment under the stars.

Thomas R. Suozzi Chairman

A BEATLES TRIBUTEStrawberry Fields

A huge hit of MPSMF’s 2017 season, Strawberry Fields consists of top musicians who were cast members of Beatlemania, the Broadway smash hit that recreated the magic of John, Paul, George and Ringo. They present a concert that is about the closest you can get to a live Beatles experience,

complete with the sights, sounds and distinctive costuming of the Fab Four. Strawberry Fields performs a popular weekly Beatles Brunch at B.B. King Blues Club in Times Square and has appeared at large venues such as (the former) Shea Stadium, Citifield, Fenway Park and Yankee Stadium.

A BILLY JOEL TRIBUTERichie Cannata and the Lords of 52nd Street

Glen Cove’s own Richie Cannata and the Lords of 52nd Street were an integral part of Billy Joel’s career. They collaborated closely with the singer/songwriter, performing with him on recordings and on tour. After a period of inactivity, Cannata and the Lords reunited in 2016, blowing away the sold-out crowd at The Space at Westbury. They have since toured regularly to enthusiastic audiences at public and private events including Morgan Park Summer Music Festival. The ensemble’s members are Richie Cannata on sax and keys, Liberty DeVitto on drums, Russell Javors and Dennis DelGaudio on guitar, Malcolm Gold on bass, Doug Kistner on keys and David Clark on piano and vocals.

THE MARGUERITE SUOZZIYOUNG PERFORMERS TALENT COMPETITION

Morgan Park Summer Music Festival’s Marguerite Suozzi Young Performers Talent Competition partnered with the Nassau Music Educators Association (NMEA) to administer our 2019 talent search and to promote this outreach to young musicians throughout the county. Through this association with NMEA, word of our annual competition now reaches all of Nassau County’s music students, giving many more the opportunity to compete. We are pleased to announce that NMEA’s choice as winner of our 2019 $2,000 scholarship is an extraordinary young music student, 17-year-old Ekele Ukeghu, a 2019 graduate of Elmont Memorial High School.

An honor roll student ranked in the top 11 percent of her class, Ekele is a vocalist and actress who has appeared in many musicals at her school and at the Long Island Musical Theatre program. She has held leadership roles with the National Tri-M Music Honor Society and the Senior High Mixed Chorus and has participated in her school’s junior and senior orchestra, select chorus, vocal jazz choir as well as All-County NYSSMA Vocal Jazz at Tilles Center and All-State NYSSMA Vocal Jazz at

the Rochester Convention Center. Ekele has taken master classes with major artists and was selected to participate in the 2017 and 2018 New York State Vocal Jazz Concert. Her teacher, Benjamin Pesenti, lauds her as “the single most talented student I have ever worked with.” Ekele will be continuing her theatrical education at New York University’s Tisch School of Drama.

2019 MORGAN PARK SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL GLEN COVE, LONG ISLAND, NEW YORK

Many Long Island communities have cherished traditions but few can

boast of the longevity of an enterprise such as Morgan Park Summer

Music Festival. Managed by a volunteer

committee and supported entirely

through donations from individuals and

local businesses, this summer MPSMF

continues its beloved tradition of free

summer concerts in Morgan Park into its

60th season.

Morgan Park was donated to the people of Glen Cove in 1932 by J.P.

Morgan in memory of his wife. But it was not until 1959, when Joseph A.

Suozzi, then mayor of Glen Cove, suggested that

there be free concerts in the park; he reached

out to Laura Parsons Pratt to make it happen.

Morgan Park Summer Music Festival was born

beginning with one concert that first summer,

expanding over the years to offer performances

every weekend in July and August. Eventually,

the park’s charming gazebo proved to be inadequate for some of

the larger concerts so longtime chairman Marguerite (Marge) Suozzi,

then chairman of Morgan Park Summer Music Festival, and her team

of volunteers came up with

strategies that raised money

for the beautiful new stage.

The stage, as the concerts, was

funded entirely through private

donations and gifted to the City

of Glen Cove on July 4th, 1995.

In 2015, Mrs. Suozzi retired as the long-term chairman of MPSMF. With

the unanimous approval of the members of the executive committee,

the baton was passed to her son, Tom Suozzi. In the fall of 2017,

MPSMF lost two of its stalwart leaders, Marguerite Suozzi and Nancy

Epstein. On Earth Day 2018, a tree was planted in the park to honor

them and their many years of service to our community. We will

always miss Marge and Nancy’s wisdom and guidance.

An important part of MPSMF’s mission is

to promote talented young musicians. For

45 years, MPSMF sponsored the Young

Performers Competition. This competition,

which was named after Marguerite Suozzi

upon her retirement, was open to youth ages

9 to 19 who lived or went to school on the North Shore of Nassau

County. The competition provided students with a professional

auditioning experience, monetary awards and an opportunity to

perform at their own concert. In 2019, in lieu of the competition,

MPSMF collaborated with the Nassau Music Educator’s Association

to provide a scholarship to a student who plans to enhance his/her

musical studies.

Morgan Park Summer Music Festival’s message of community

enrichment and entertainment continues to reach into the homes and

businesses of Glen Cove, the surrounding North Shore communities

and to wherever MPSMF fans have moved.

The audience has settled in chairs and on blankets along the

rolling lawns and trees of the park.

As twilight fades to darkness, the

beauty of the harbor and Long

Island Sound just beyond offers an

extraordinary backdrop to the stage.

The performers appear. A magical

evening is about to begin.

And that magic has been happening here for 60 years.

Entertaining Long Islanders for 60 Years!

The celebration of Morgan Park Summer Music Festival’s 60 Anniversary continues at the North Shore Historical Museum.

Stop by this summer to see the exhibit on our history. Admissions is free as MPSMF has underwritten admission.
