The Collections volunteer/intern will report to the Director of Museum Collections, and interact with the Registrar and Assistant Collections Manager on a daily basis. The volunteer/intern will have the opportunity to learn about accessioning and deaccessioning methods, archival housing, condition reporting, safe object handling, packing, and various aspects of working with a collections management system (The Museum System). Important projects for 2019 are cataloging and housing recently acquired collections of contemporary Native American art. The job requires interns to sit and perform data entry for long periods, as well as stand, stoop, lift, and climb. The position is unpaid. The volunteer/intern will learn how to create archival enclosures, as well as how to house objects using various techniques and materials. Condition Reporting: Knowing the condition of objects helps prioritize care as well as resources. The volunteer/intern will lean how to evaluate object stability and write reports. About the Museum: The Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art was founded by Indianapolis businessman and philanthropist, Harrison Eiteljorg. Our mission is to inspire an appreciation and understanding of the art, history and cultures of the American West and the Indigenous peoples of North America.
