Welcome to the wonderful world of Girl Scout camp! Our camps are open to ALL girls, regardless of whether they are current Girl Scout members. Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Girl Scout camp programs are designed to help girls discover the world around them, connect with other campers, and take action in their own lives and communities. That’s what leadership is all about!

American Camp Association (ACA)Camp Togowoods and Girl Scout Day Camp at Singing Hills are accredited by the American Camp Association (ACA). We are proud to be Alaska’s only accredited camps just for girls, meeting standards for health and safety, staffing, and program quality. ACA reviews every facet of our operation. Our ACA-trained directors oversee all camp programs operated by Girl Scouts of Alaska. For more information, visit the ACA website at www.acacamps.org.

At Girl Scout camp girls experience new things like cooking over a fire for the first time or going on a six-day, 30-mile backpack trip. They make new friends. They laugh and sing and play. To an adult, summer camp might seem to be just simple, wholesome fun. But for girls there is also important work happening – the work of character development.

It isn’t just activities like canoeing, hiking, and outdoor cooking that contribute to a camper’s growth. Often, it is by way of the small, seemingly insignificant happenings that contributes most to a girl’s growth.

Through free play (like building gnome homes) and helping with camp chores (setting tables in the dining hall and cleaning latrines), girls build character – the type of character vital to future success. For example, when girls live together at resident camp or spend all day together at day camp, character issues are bound to arise. How girls handle these situations (with the support of their counselors) is how character is built.

Christopher Peterson, a psychology professor at the University of Michigan, has narrowed to seven the list of critical character traits that children need to develop into successful adults. Our camp programs have always helped girls develop four of the character traits including: A sense of wonder about the world, social intelligence, zest/love of life, and optimism.

This summer we will focus on further developing the remaining three charac-ter traits that experts have deemed the “silver bullets,” which result in children (and adults) having not just happy, but meaningful and fulfilling lives:

• Grit: The ability to “hang in there”, to “tough it out”, persevere, and recover from a setback.

• Self-control: The ability to regulate feelings and impulses; to recognize and manage them, edit them, not be controlled by them.

• Gratitude: An essential feeling of recognizing and being appreciative of what we have been given.

Imagine the grit it takes a camper to face a 35-foot-tall climbing tower for the first time. Picture the self-control a camper develops when trying to light a fire in the rain. Consider the gratitude a camper experiences when another camper who is excitedly involved in an activity, stops and offers to be her buddy to the latrine.

Here are some examples of how campers have expressed their character growth on their end-of-camp evaluations:

“I learned that I can stay strong even when times are hard.” A seventh-grader expressing grit.

“Never juje [judge] somwon [someone].” A fourth-grader expressing self-control and social intelligence.

At camp, girls experience vital engagement – the type of engagement that allows for deep learning and meaningful relationships. It also allows for the character development that is essential for children.

Our VisionOur camps are committed to creating a community that helps campers unlock their potential and discover the world, while developing life skills.

Our Program PhilosophyWe believe that everything that happens at camp is program, from cleaning the latrines to paddling a canoe. In our safe and supportive environment, girls become active participants in the learning process as counselors guide them in not only having fun but understanding the importance of how and what they are doing.

Why camp is importantWe believe camp and childhood go together just as well as peanut butter and jelly. Summer camp is not only tremendously fun but is vitally important. Here are just a few reasons camp is so important:

• Camp presents a remarkable opportunity for your camper to widen her horizons, make new and lasting friends, and discover new strengths.

• The true payoff of camp will be apparent when your camper comes home more self-reliant, self-sufficient, and self-confident.

• Camp is a place where girls can “practice” growing up by stretching their social, emotional, physical, and cognitive muscles outside the context of their immediate families.

• Camp creates future leaders. At camp girls a get close-up look at compassionate leadership through the camp staff. And, girls get loads of opportunities to practice being a leader themselves by voicing their feelings, making individual choices, and negotiating group decision making.

• Camp offers challenges that are real and that require a sustained effort to master. The sense of accomplishment girls get from mastering those challenges is real and enduring.

• Campers develop a personal sense of security and self-confidence that will help them be comfortable in their own skin for the rest of their lives.

• Camp embraces the natural environment and allows girls to experience it.

A note about safety…Nothing is more important than the emotional and physical safety of our campers. Our programs have been designed to allow campers to take healthy risks in a safe and nurturing environment. Our enthusiastic staff receive extensive training before camp and are chosen for their maturity, energy, and ability to be a positive role model for your girl.

Singing Hills is located outside Chugiak (Mirror Lake exit) on beautiful Edmonds Lake.

Girl Scout Day Camp at Singing Hills is based on the Girl Scout Leadership Experience –

• Discover: the leader inside yourself and the world around you;

• Connect: with others; and

General resident camp information

At resident camp, every day is a chance to do something different, meet new people, and challenge yourself. With professional leadership, high-quality staff and small camper groups with high counselor-to-camper ratio, resident camp will feel like home away from home.

Camper groups are generally made up of 8-12 girls and two

counselors. Camper groups attend daily activities together.

Special care is taken to ensure that each camper is given

challenging opportunities along with basic skill-based instruction.

Camp TogowoodsGirls from across Alaska attend Camp Togowoods every summer. Camp Togowoods is located on more than 300 beautiful acres along the shores of Three Mile Lake near Wasilla. The property is owned by Girl Scouts of Alaska. It encompasses five ecosystems to explore, including our wetlands boardwalk. All Camp Togowoods campers enjoy: arts and crafts, nature hikes, environmental educa

-tion, swimming, canoeing or kayaking, outdoor cooking, and our 35-foot climbing tower (girls entering grades 4+). Campers sleep in platform tents (wooden floors, cots and mosquito netting), bringing the outdoors within reach. Campers have a sense of independence with the security of counselors living in an adjacent tent.

For information on how to fund your camper’s camp experience see page 19.

Traveling to Camp Girls travel to camp by car and by plane. If your camper is traveling by plane, camp staff will meet her at the airport. Parents are responsible for making travel arrangements. Before making travel arrangements check the parent handbook for specifics on arrival and departure times. Questions? Contact Kelly at [email protected] or 907-273-0308.

Wilderness Adventure ProgramsWilderness trips take courage, confidence, and character to the limit. In small groups, girls quickly learn to count on each other. You have to paddle or hike together or you don’t get there. There is no one to do it but you, and you can do it.

Our trip programs teach girls outdoor skills. More importantly, our wilderness trips lay a solid foundation for leadership,

teamwork, and self-confidence throughout girls’ lives.

All trek programs spend time in remote wilderness areas and at many points on trail, groups will be more than two hours from professional medical care. Staff are trained in emergency back country procedures, carry satellite phones, and at least one staff member is certified in Wilderness First Aid. All programs require a properly-fitted backpack, wilderness-rated packable sleeping bag, and hiking boots. Campers should be able to carry a 20-30-lb. backpack and, for canoeing treks, share the weight of carrying an 80-lb. canoe for up to a mile over land.

All wilderness campers also experience the fun of our Girl ScoutCamp programs (page 11).

Check out the trip progression chart below to help you and yourcamper choose the right adventure. Parents and campers self-select the right trip level based on skills and grade level. For help, contact Amanda at the Anchorage office at 907-273-0316 / 800-478-7448

Lead OnCamp develops courageous and con-fident leaders. Girls of all ages practice decision making, communication with others, and work on conflict-resolution skills. Our older girls also participate in leadership discovery activities. Throughout a week of hands-on activi-ties, girls will put leadership skills to work. Of course, girls will get to experi-ence everything at camp from hiking to s’mores around the campfire.

Girls who attend Lead On at Camp Togowoods and want to further develop their leadership skills have

the option of returning to Togowoods June 28 - July 3 for hands-on experience working with younger campers.

Lead On meets the requirements for the Counselor in Training (CIT) program.

Girls may attend Lead On multiple summers and earn their Counselor in Training (CIT) II pin.

2019 CampershipConfidential Financial Aid Application

Camperships provide assistance to girls who wish to attend camp. Guidelines for granting camperships:

• Any girl may apply.

• There is a need for financial assistance. Need is defined that without assistance your camper would not be able to have a camp experience.

• Families with delinquent accounts will be unable to apply for camperships until the debt is paid.

• The girl’s family will be expected to pay a minimum payment of $40.00. If families have difficulty paying the deposit, contact the Anchorage office.

• Campership assistance is awarded up to 90% of camp fee including bus transportation if applicable, depending on family size and income.•

One session of day and resident camp may be funded, however more than one of your children may apply for a

compership. Note: Your camper may apply for a campership even though she has received one in the past.

• You will receive notification of campership granted and your balance due.

The completed campership application form, along with the registration form and deposit, should be mailed to:
