OVERVIEW OF UNIVERSITY OF GHANA REMEMBRANCE DAY

The University of Ghana has set aside two days in November each year as Remembrance Day: that is the first Friday of November for Muslim Prayers and the first Sunday of November for Christian Service, in remembrance of departed members of the University Community (i.e. past and present staff, students, alumni and friends).

Remembrance Day, formerly dubbed All Souls' Day Service, is an inter-faith service which grew out of the service held in memory of the late Chancellor of the University, Oyeeman Wereko Ampem II, in March, 2006. As the character of All Souls' Day Service was inter-faith, Muslim Prayers were incorporated into the service in the past years. These were offered by Imam Abubakari Baba, Imam of the Legon Central Mosque.

The offertory taken at these Services has so far gone to support needy and bright students registered with the University Students Financial Aid Office.

Since 2010, there has been a departure from previous years, with two days being set aside to remember departed members – one by the Muslim Community which takes place on the first Friday of November and the other on the first Sunday of November by the Christian Community. This is now the accepted format for the Memorial Services for departed members of the University community and now with a new name, Remembrance Day.

Thus, Remembrance Day provides the opportunity for all members of the University Community to remember their colleagues who departed this world during the academic year, since members are unable to attend the funerals of all departed colleagues, given the academic schedule of the University. The Chaplaincy Board collaborates with the Public Affairs Directorate to plan and organise Remembrance Day for both Muslim and Christian members of the community.

HYMNS

KING OF GLORY KING OF PEACE

1 King of glory, King of peace,I will love Thee;and that love may never cease,I will move Thee.Thou hast granted my request,Thou hast heard me;Thou didst note my working breast,Thou hast spared me.

2 Wherefore with my utmost art I will sing Thee,

and the cream of all my heartI will bring Thee.Though my sins against me cried,Thou didst clear me;and alone, when they replied,Thou didst hear me.

3 Seven whole days, not one in seven,I will praise Thee;in my heart, though not in heaven,I can raise Thee.Small it is, in this poor sortto enroll Thee:e'en eternity's too shortto extol Thee.

CAPTAIN OF ISRAEL'S HOST,AND GUIDE

1 Captain of Israel's host, and GuideOf all who seek the land above,Beneath Thy shadow we abide,The cloud of Thy protecting love; Our strength, Thy grace, our rule,

Thy Word; Our end, the glory of the Lord.

HARK! HARK, MY SOUL! ANGELIC SONGS ARE SWELLING,

1. Hark! hark, my soul! Angelic songs are swelling,O'er earth's green fields and ocean's wave-beat shore; How sweet the truth those blessed strains are tellingOf that new life when sin shall be no more!

ChorusAngels of Jesus, angels of light,Singing to welcome the pilgrims of the night!

2. Onward we go; for still we hear them singing,

Come, weary souls, for Jesus bids you come; And through the dark, its echoes sweetly ringing,The music of the Gospel leads us home.

3. Far, far away, like bells at evening pealing,The voice of Jesus sounds o'er land and sea;And laden souls, by thousands meekly stealing,Kind Shepherd, turn their weary steps to Thee.

4. Rest comes at length; though life be long and dreary,The day must dawn, and darksome night be past;Faith's journeys end in welcome to the weary,And Heaven, the heart's true home, will come at last.

5. Angels, sing on, your faithful watches keeping;Sing us sweet fragments of the songs above,Till morning's joy shall end the night of weeping,And life's long shadows break in cloudless love.

2. By Thine unerring Spirit led,We shall not in the desert strayWe shall not full direction needNor miss our providential way;As far from danger as from fear,While Love, almighty Love, is near.

ABIDE WITH ME! FAST FALLS THE EVENTIDE

1. Abide with me; fast falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide; When other helpers fail and comforts flee,Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me.

2. Swift to its close ebbs out life's little day;Earth's joys grow dim, its glories pass away;Change and decay in all around I see—O Thou who changest not, abide with me.

3. I need Thy presence every passing hour; What but Thy grace can foil the tempter's power?Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be?Through cloud and sunshine, Lord, abide with me.

4. I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless;Ills have no weight, and tears no bitterness;Where is death's sting? Where, grave, thy victory?I triumph still, if Thou abide with me.

5. Hold Thou Thy cross before my closing eyes;Shine through the gloom and point me to the skies;Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain

shadows flee;In life, in death, O Lord, abide with me.

I NEED THEE EVERY HOUR

1. I need Thee every hour,Most gracious Lord;No tender voice like Thine,Can peace afford.

I need Thee, O I need Thee,Every hour I need Thee!O bless me now, Savior,I come to Thee.

2. I need Thee every hour,Stay Thou near by;Temptations lose their power,When Thou art nigh.

3. I need Thee every hour,In joy or pain;Come quickly and abide,Or life is vain.

4 I need Thee every hourTeach me Thy will

And Thy rich promises

In me fulfil
