Welcome to the 2019 Michigan State University Plant Trials

Located in the MSU Horticulture Gardens East Lansing, Michigan

The MSU Horticulture Gardens have been designed and built based on the generous financial support of our horticulture industries, the general public, and our “Friends of the Garden”. We are proud to be a part of the MSU Department of Horticulture, considered to be one of the finest horticulture teaching, research, and extension facilities in the country. Most of the plant trials are located in the Amien and Florence Carter Annual Trial garden, which is arranged as a garden display.

The purpose of our trial gardens is to grow and evaluate a wide range of new and sometimes old our mid-Michigan climatic conditions. Our growing conditions here are characterized by cold winters (USDA Zone 5) and cool springs followed by warm, sometimes hot, humid summers. Our last frost date is typically May 15, and night temperatures are consistently above 50 °F only after June 1.

After the last few years, it’s hard to remember what a “normal” growing season (May through September) is like in terms of temperature and precipitation. However, despite some heavy rainfall in June, 2019 is shaping up to be a fairly average year. Temperatures have been average during both May and June. May had a normal amount of rainfall, but June was a completely different story with double the amount of rainfall (nearly four more inches) than the historical average. Time will only tell for the remainder of our trial season, but overall, the plants seem to be performing well.

In the MSU trials, we rank performance every two weeks based on vigor, uniformity, and “Wow factor”. We also take note of susceptibility to diseases and insects, and tolerance to changes in environmental conditions when appropriate. Plant performance depends on a number of factors including genetics, soil, and

weather conditions. A summary of this evaluation information is posted on the web each year for professionals and the general gardening public. http://www.canr.msu.edu/hrt/our_gardens/trial_garden/

Seeds or young plants are typically submitted by breeders, seed companies, and nurseries. Plants are grown in our MSU greenhouses and transplanted into ground beds or containers starting in late-May and completed this year in early-June.

Companies are given the choice of whether they would prefer their plants to be grown in ground beds, hanging baskets, or in 22” containers. In the ground beds, plants are typically planted at 8” to 12” spacing depending on the species with generally about 24 plants per trial entry. Some entries perform remarkably better in containers than in the ground.

Funding to support our trials come mostly from plant breeding companies, the Western Michigan Greenhouse Association, the Metro Detroit Flower Growers Association and MSU Horticulture Garden-sponsored events. We are looking for additional sponsors as we continue to expand the scope and nature of our trial gardens.

We are also an official All American Selections (AAS) trial location and a number of interesting new ornamental plants were tested in 2019 to help establish the next round of All American winners! MSU was first selected as a site for the AAS trials in 1978.

All of these gardens are maintained by a dedicated staff housed in the Horticulture Department. Dan Bulkowski is the overall Garden Manager, Daedre McGrath is the Annual Trial Garden Manager, and Bethany Troy is the Perennial Garden Manager. All Trials are under the direction Dr. Kristin Getter (Garden Director).

If you have time, be sure and visit the Judy DeLapa Herbaceous Perennial Gardens, the 4-H Children’s Garden, and the Clarence E. Lewis Arboretum. Also be sure to check out our Pickle Garden (located in the Vegetables and Insect Pollinators Garden), featuring fruits, veggies, herbs, and spices with prime pickle potential! We are also carrying out a study of almost 90 succulent varieties for use in Michigan gardens. Our goal is to identify varieties that tolerate outdoor growing conditions and grow quickly enough to hold their own as annuals. Another feature this summer is our flowering annual vine display, which can be found in the South Garden (just West of the Rose Garden). We believe you will find many additional jewels if you further explore our MSU Horticulture Gardens. For a

detailed map, see page 3, and for descriptions of all our gardens, please go to our website: http://www.canr.msu.edu/hrt/our_gardens/

Thank you for visiting the MSU Horticulture Gardens!

Michigan State University Plant Trials 2019 Cultural Information

Starting Material The majority of trial plants started from seeds were sown between March and April. Perennial flower seeds were started as early as late-January. Seeds were germinated in seed flats or plug trays in a greenhouse set at 75 °F D/N. Specific dates of seeding are given in the following trial tables. After appropriate growth, seedlings were transplanted to either 1204 or 1801 flats. Transplant dates are also given in the following tables.

Cloned plants were propagated by cuttings or tissue culture in commercial greenhouses. Rooted cuttings were shipped to MSU as liners. Upon receipt, the rooted cuttings were transplanted immediately into 1801 flats. Most were received and transplanted between late-March and mid-April. Unrooted cuttings were stuck into flats of peat-lite soil mix and grown in a mist-house until roots emerged.

Greenhouse Conditions After transplanting, all seed and vegetative material were grown in glass greenhouses set at 75 °F daytime and 68 °F nighttime temperature until moved to the garden beds.

Plants were grown in peat-lite soil mix (2-B Mix generously donated by Fafard) and fertigated at every watering with 19-4-23 (125 ppm N) water soluble fertilizer. No PGRs were used on annuals evaluated in these trials. Container Plants Companies are given the choice of whether they would prefer their plants to be grown in containers, hanging baskets, or ground beds.

When requested, plants were transplanted into 22” containers or hanging baskets and held in the greenhouse for about 3-4 weeks before placing them outdoors mid-June. Depending on the size of the transplant, containers/hanging baskets were planted with 7 (1801-size) to 10 (1204-size) plants.

Outdoor Ground Bed Management Fall 2018 – Cleanup, early bed preparation After removal of annuals last fall, all beds were raked and cleaned. Typically, we add compost to all beds each fall. In 2018, we did not add compost due to soil test results revealing a very high (22-26%) organic matter content and optimal to supra-optimal N, P, and K levels in our soils.

Spring 2019 – Pre-planting activities Bed lines were marked and hand cut. Round-Up was applied where necessary to control weeds before planting. Spring 2019 - Planting Schedule The majority of transplants were planted outdoors between May 28 and June 4. Typical plant spacing Plants are typically planted at 8” to 12” on center, depending on the species. We typically plant at least 24 plants per trial entry in landscaped beds.

Page 9

Michigan State University Plant Trials 2019 Cultural Information - continued

Summer Maintenance Watering All beds and containers were hand watered as needed, sometimes on a daily basis. Fertilization Ground beds were fertigated every 2 to 3 weeks with a 19-4-23 (250 ppm N) water soluble fertilizer starting mid-summer. Container trials received an application of Osmocote fertilizer early in the season, then were fertigated on the same schedule as the ground beds for the remainder of the season.

Weeding All beds were hand weeded and cultivated as needed until plants filled in. With the wet and hot weather this summer, the garden staff and volunteers will both acknowledge that the weeds have been particularly aggressive, purslane in particular! Long hours of hand weeding were required to keep the beds looking good. Volunteers helped a great deal on this tedious task. Insect and Disease control No treatments were given this year for insect or disease control in the annual gardens. Relatively few troublesome insects or diseases were noted this year thus far, with the exception of stem rot in seed Impatiens and Celosia due to our very wet early summer conditions

Hanging baskets The gorgeous hanging baskets seen throughout our gardens were generously provided by Four Star Greenhouses, Carleton, Michigan

Potting Soil For this growing season, all of the potting soil used in our greenhouses and for our outdoor containers was generously donated by Fafard http://fafard.com/
