  • At Hanna, we’ve spent 75 years helping kids grow: teaching, counseling, and preparing them for the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood. And every step of the way, we’ve noticed something important: we’re not heroes — the kids are.

From All of Us at HannaCourage isn’t something organizations like ours talk much about when telling stories about the people we help. Too often, instead, they focus on portraying the people they help as victims and themselves as saviors.

At Hanna, we’ve spent 75 years helping kids grow: teaching, counseling, and preparing them for the challenges and responsibilities of adulthood. And every step of the way, we’ve noticed something important: we’re not heroes — the kids are.

To rise up and break free of life’s challenges and past traumas, to build up resilience and strive for a better future, that takes real courage.

We witness that courage every day, starting with the young man who makes the heart-wrenching decision to leave home and attend Hanna. The kid working to adjust to life on campus. The student who’s turned the corner and is working hard to achieve his future goals. And the Hanna graduate who is actively putting to work all of the skills and wisdom he learned during his time here.

The stories in this year’s annual report show what life is like for students, from admissions through graduation. We also share how one community leader is partnering with us to help improve lives beyond our campus. In these stories, you’ll see all of the work we do at Hanna is to support people’s courageous efforts to build a better future. It happens in the classroom, in the cottages, in counseling sessions, and in the community through the Hanna Institute.

We built Hanna to help marginalized kids find hope for the future. But the truth is: the courage our kids show gives us hope. The courage we see in our community gives us a reason to believe the work we’re doing is important and necessary. It gives us the courage we need to carry on in our mission.

We are thankful to our students, our staff, our community, and to our donors for having the courage to try to build a better future.

Thanks for supporting courage at Hanna — and helping us all build a better future.

  • 03Fernando believed Hanna would help him finish high school strong and make his mom proud.Fernando was a junior in high school. He was failing his classes and lacking any hope for the future. The clock was ticking down towards turning 18 when he began to wonder: what would his future hold if he flunked out?

Fortunately, Fernando had two cousins who attended Hanna. They encouraged him to apply, but Fernando was skeptical. He knew his cousins’ backgrounds, and he thought, compared to them, his life hadn’t been that bad. He wasn’t sure that he would be admitted.

But he saw how sad his mom was for him; he saw he wasn’t headed anywhere good. So he applied.

The process took months, but it felt like a lifetime. He handled the entire process on his own — a big step toward taking responsibility for his own life. But it wasn’t just the waiting that made an impression: it was how honest he had to be with himself through the application process.

In his essay explaining why he wanted to come to Hanna, he felt his story wasn’t “dramatic” enough,

yet it was still his story: he had run out of options and wanted to do better. He wanted to do more than just finish high school — he wanted to thrive. Fernando believed Hanna would help him finish high school strong and make his mom proud.

Deciding to apply to Hanna isn’t easy. For Fernando, going it alone took a lot of courage, and a powerful desire to improve. And as he went through the admissions process, Fernando found that desire growing: graduation didn’t have to be the only goal. College could be in his future. With Hanna, a better life for him and his family could someday be real.

After months of waiting, Hanna granted Fernando admission. In him, we saw a young man who was turning a corner, beginning to see how he could make a better future for himself. We are blessed to be able to help him make it all happen.

Being seen goes a long way toward helping any kid adjust to a brand new life.

Transition is usually tough. Going from one of the biggest schools in San Francisco to a small private school in the Sonoma Valley, well, that’s bound to be hard.

But for Malachi, adjusting to Hanna life has been easier and better than expected. Since he arrived, he’s been surprised at every turn by how open, friendly, and just plain cool the other kids are.

Malachi is a little shy. From the moment he arrived at Hanna, his instinct was to keep to himself and just get through the day — and then, maybe, down the road, he’d start breaking out of his shell.

Then came Orientation Day. Right away, Malachi was surprised by how easy it was to fit in, to hang out, and to feel good about coming to Hanna.

The other kids treated him like family. And since the school was so much smaller, he couldn’t get lost in the crowd. In every class, in every hallway, Malachi was seen by teachers, counselors, and fellow students. Being seen goes a long way toward helping any kid adjust to a brand new life. It not only helped him fit in, but it actually helped him want to become a better student.

Malachi has a long way to go — he’s just getting started at Hanna. But from discovering a love for science to being part of the basketball team, he’s already grown and changed for the better.

Asked what it’s like coming to Hanna, Malachi says: “Everyone here makes it easier.” Whether it’s day one or at the first midterm, at some point, you’ll find you’ve adjusted just fine to the Hanna life.

Antonio took the challenge head-on — now, he’s getting all As and Bs.

Sometimes things are all about the setting in which they happen. If a flower gets enough sunlight, it grows strong and fast; stuck in the shade, it struggles to survive. For Antonio, coming to Hanna was like planting himself directly in the sun.

Before Hanna, he was failing most of his classes and getting into plenty of trouble. Since arriving here, Antonio has excelled in every facet of Hanna life. Unlike his old school, Hanna challenged and encouraged him to become more independent and take full responsibility for his work. Antonio took the challenge head-on — now, he’s getting all As and Bs.

He’s filled up his free time with a bunch of extracurricular activities — including soccer, cross-country, kickboxing, and leadership class, where he heads the yearbook project. In music class, he discovered he really likes piano — and, with natural talent, he’s excited for his first public performance.

It’s not just what Antonio is doing now that matters — it’s also the future that he’s planning. If you were to ask him two years ago if he wanted to go to college, he would’ve shrugged. Today, he’s made up his mind to attend junior college to become an EMT; then, he plans to work his way through school to become a nurse. And, someday, he’ll be a trauma surgeon! Right now he’s working with our Follow-On program to make his big plans a reality.

At Hanna, we love seeing kids grow up and begin to dream big. We’re proud of Antonio for rising to the challenge; and we’re honored that we can be a part of his dreams for the future!

  • 08“Hanna is full of resources,” Dakota says. “So many people who want to help, are looking to help. You have to be open to it to take advantage of it.”

Being part of a team has its rewards — but only once you understand your role and how to serve your teammates. That lesson became clear to Dakota during his time at Hanna. A gifted athlete and natural leader, sports were a mainstay growing up. But his leadership skills took time to hone — and he got some help from his football coach. Dakota says, “Coach taught me that to lead my team, I had to lift everyone up, and bring them along with me.”

That lesson stuck with Dakota, who graduated from Hanna in 2016. Now studying automotive technology at Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC), Dakota hopes to work his way into fabrication — building cutting-edge performance parts and vehicles.

Dakota also learned at Hanna that success on or off the field isn’t just about lifting up others. It’s about knowing how to let others lift you up, too. His confidence in the transition between

high school and adulthood is a product of his engagement with the world around him and his fearless approach to accepting help. “Hanna is full of resources,” Dakota says. “So many people who want to help, are looking to help. You have to be open to it to take advantage of it.” Today, Dakota is working hard: in class at SRJC, and at the worksite, doing construction to pay his bills. He stays in touch with Ms. Davis and Ms. Goodwin in Hanna’s Follow On program, taking advantage of scholarship opportunities and keeping connected to the Hanna family. “Ms. Davis and Ms. Goodwin are just the best people,” he says. “You can feel the love from both of them.” At Hanna, Dakota learned the power of lifting others up. And with the support and lift he’s received here, he’s out in the world building more than cars or houses — he’s building up himself and those around him.

The good work happening at Hanna isn’t just on campus, and it isn’t limited to the Hanna Boys Center and the high school. It’s also happening in the community through the Hanna Institute. As a leading provider of trauma-informed care training in Sonoma County and Northern California, Hanna Institute is dedicated to advancing nonviolent communication, social justice and trauma recovery. We do this by bringing trauma-informed care to the people and places most impacted by trauma and violence. By raising public awareness, transforming agency practices and culture, and teaching strategies for self-care and recovery, we are helping to transform our communities.

The Institute’s work is a growing part of what we do at Hanna. We want to use our expertise to not only help our kids on campus, but to serve kids, families and the community at large. That’s why we are convening events, training educators and community leaders in trauma-informed care, and partnering with other leading organizations to expand our impact. In 2019, we were proud to host numerous events, bring in great speakers, and reach a wide audience in our community. In 2020 and beyond, Hanna will continue to grow its reach and lead the national effort to bring trauma-informed practices to organizations and communities across our country.

Sharing Our Knowledge, Growing Our Influence.

Since 2018 we’ve trained more than 1,300 people

    across 100 agencies in trauma-informed

    care.

Offered educational workshops on trauma and early adversity in Spanish for parents and families across the county.

Trained all Sonoma County probation officers in trauma-informed care and psychological first-aid.

Partnered with St. Joseph Health to lead trauma-informed care and mindfulness practices for teachers across Sonoma and Napa County.

Trained preschool and early education providers throughout Sonoma in Rainbowdance in both English and Spanish.

  • More than 30 community groups use Hanna’s facilities throughout the year including local soccer and baseball

leagues, Transcendence Theater Company, La Luz and Special Olympics.

We do it through events, where we bring in influential speakers and transformative educational opportunities. We partner with leading organizations across the healthcare, education, and philanthropic fields to help improve lives. And we do it by teaching people trauma-informed care.

Hanna Institute is hard at work looking for opportunities to lift up people in our community...

PartnershipsHanna Institute partners with organizations and leaders in the field of trauma-informed care to provide a range of training, research, and outreach projects. Our partnerships include the International Trauma Center for advancing nonviolent communication, social justice and trauma recovery, as well as organizations like La Luz, which offers parent-child education programs on the Hanna campus. Other partnerships also include local school districts, nonprofits, and scholars like USF’s Dr. Daniela Domínguez (you can read all about her research work on the next page).

EventsWe host experts to build understanding about trauma, adversity and toxic stress while supporting the recovery and resilience of individuals and communities. Our Speaker Series has featured leaders like Dr. Nadine Burke Harris, California’s first Surgeon General, and social equity activist and leader, Dolores Huerta. Our community events foster unity, share innovative and proven practices and position Hanna as a leader in the field of trauma-informed care.

Training & CertificationIn collaboration with International Trauma Center (ITC), we are proud to provide continuing education classes for organizations and individuals seeking to build trauma-informed practices into their work. Our bilingual and bicultural staff provide trainings in both English and Spanish, and keep cultural relevancy and equity at the center of our approach.

  • 15Danny and her team developed a balanced, integrated approach to looking at Sonoma Valley’s LatinX community’s challenges, but also strengths and assets.

The study included 54 participants, with 5 focus groups and 29 in-depth interviews.

In lectures with marriage and family counseling students at the University of San Francisco, Assistant Professor Daniela Domínguez stresses the importance of listening to your community, whether it’s the people in your home, or the folks down the block.

“We have a lot to learn from the community,” she says. “We have to be curious, open, and respectful. We have to celebrate their culture and strength.”

Actively engaging with the community is at the heart of the Hanna Institute’s mission, and what drew Danny to its work. After meeting with Institute Co-Director Nick Dalton, she was both inspired and intrigued by what the Institute is doing. Invested in immigration and LatinX concerns, Danny saw a natural fit with the Institute’s work in communities across the North Bay and soon joined the team to head up a significant research project: a 15-month study, collecting data within LatinX communities in Sonoma County, to capture a snapshot of its community that reflects their own view of themselves and creates a launchpad for new community initiatives that support, nurture, and grow wellbeing.

“The existing research and literature is important and valuable, but really only tells one side of the story, it’s all very one-dimensional.”

By engaging directly with the community in the research process, Danny and the Institute were able to work with folks in new and important ways — not just in their areas of research, but in how they’ve gone about performing it. Danny sees the underlying process as critical as their findings. A LatinX scholar and community member, Danny was primed to engage with the subject in profoundly meaningful ways. But she stresses that the project was a deep collaboration: not only driven by her, but with a group of co-researchers who’ve engaged a broad coalition. They learned from the LatinX community that previous research focused too heavily on the impacts of disparity while failing to capture the whole story. In response, Danny and her team developed a balanced, integrated approach to looking at the LatinX community’s challenges, but also strengths and assets. The end result is a study and findings that the community can both believe and do something about.

From here, the team will be going back to the LatinX community across Sonoma County to share the report with partners and participants, holding community forums to debate preliminary insights and hone the report. But Danny and the Institute aren’t stopping there. They’ll be making recommendations for how this report can help the community. Or, as Danny says, “We want to see it end in action.”
