MOUNTAIN WEST FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

AUTONOMOUS FIVE WINSIn 2019, the Mountain West has picked up wins against opponents from the ACC (Florida State), Big Ten (Purdue), Pac-12 (Arizona, Colorado, Oregon State and UCLA) and SEC (Arkansas, Missouri and Vanderbilt).

The nine victories against autonomous five opponents are the most since 2008 (10), which is the league record for wins over A5 opponents.

In 2019, the Mountain West has the most nonconference autonomous five victories among all FBS conferences. A conference-by-conference breakdown is below:

CONFERENCE NONCONFERENCE WINSMountain West 9Big 12 6SEC 6AAC 6Big Ten 5Pac-12 5ACC 4Sun Belt 3MAC 1

More autonomous five notes below:• Air Force, which went on the road and beat an undefeated Colorado team on

Sept. 14, earned its first autonomous five victory since 2010.• Boise State has defeated an autonomous five opponent in seven of nine seasons

since joining the Mountain West. This season, the Broncos got a season-opening win at Florida State.

• Nevada has defeated an autonomous five opponent in back-to-back years (Oregon State in 2018). The Wolf Pack’s victory over Purdue (Aug. 30) is the first time a MW team beat an opponent from the Big Ten since 2010.

• San Diego State owns the highest win percentage nationally against the Pac-12 since 2016, compiling a 5-1 (.833) record.

• San José State defeated Arkansas (31-24) on Sept. 21, the Spartans’ first autonomous 5 victory since 2006.

• UNLV went on the road and dismantled Vanderbilt 34-10 on Oct. 12, earning its first autonomous five victory since 2008 (Defeated Iowa State 34-31 on Sept. 20).

• Wyoming, which defeated Missouri on Aug. 31, earned its first A5 victory since Nov. 8, 2008 (Tennessee).

BOWL ELIGIBILITYOn Oct. 12, Boise State became eligible for the postseason with a 59-37 victory over Hawai‘i. The Broncos have been selected for a bowl in 17 consecutive years, a streak that is best among the nonautonomous five and is tied with Wisconsin for fifth-longest streak nationally.

On Oct. 19, San Diego State earned a road win over San José State, making the Aztecs bowl eligible for the 10th consecutive season.

On Oct. 26, Air Force and Wyoming both became bowl eligible. Air Force, which is eligible for the postseason for the first time since 2016, defeated Utah State, while Wyoming, which earned its fourth-consecutive postseason eligibility, knocked off Nevada.

Nevada is one win away from bowl eligibility while Colorado State, Fresno State, Hawai‘i, San José State and Utah State are two victories shy.

CEMENTING NAME IN MW RECORD BOOK• Boise State junior Curtis Weaver became the Mountain West’s all-time sack leader

on Oct. 5, recording three sacks against UNLV. Weaver enters Week 11 of the 2019 season with 31.0 career sacks, the most among active FBS defenders. The record was previously held by BYU’s Jan Jorgensen (2006-09) and TCU’s Jerry Hughes (2006-09).

• Utah State’s Savon Scarver is tied for second in Conference history with five career kickoff return touchdowns, while San Diego State’s Juwan Washington is tied for fourth with three. In 2019, Scarver is one of just four FBS players with multiple kickoff return touchdowns.

• Utah State’s Dominik Eberle has made 148 consecutive PATs, a Mountain West record. Additionally, Eberle has made 54 career field goals, tied for third-most all-time in Conference history. Utah’s Louie Sakoda (2005-08) holds the MW record with 57 career makes.

• Wyoming’s Austin Conway has returned 99 punts in his career, second-most in league history. Wyoming’s Hoost Marsh (2004-07) owns the MW record with 104 punt returns.

• Wyoming’s Cooper Rothe has made 54 career field goals, tied for the third-most all-time in Mountain West history with current Utah State kicker Dominik Eberle and BYU’s Matt Payne (2001-04). Utah’s Louie Sakoda (2005-08) holds the MW record with 57 career makes.

• Wyoming linebacker Logan Wilson has 378 career tackles, just 18 shy of entering the Mountain West’s top 5 all-time. Wilson’s 378 tackles are the second-most among active FBS defenders.

MOUNTAIN WEST FOOTBALL NOTEBOOK

The Mountain West has announced a new branding and marketing campaign for the conference to further define the MW’s strong, energetic brand as it begins its 21st year as an NCAA Division I athletic conference.

Designed to make clearer the league’s purpose, vision and values the conference has adopted “At the Peak” as its tagline. The new high-impact moniker resonates the league’s personality and uniqueness as one of the elite conferences in college athletics.

The branding initiative has been in planning and development since February 2018. The Mountain West worked in partnership with Old Hat, a strategic marketing agency specializing in collegiate athletics, to develop a plan that would showcase the personality of the league.

Cradled among the most desirable locations in America, the Mountain West stretches to eight different states from the shores of the Pacific Coastline to the Rocky Mountains. The conference has long been known since its founding for its integrity and its commitment to the ideals of the student-athlete experience and the unique opportunities afforded to students at each institution.

From its inception in 1999, the Mountain West has been committed to excellence in intercollegiate athletics, while promoting the academic missions of its member institutions. Progressive in its approach, the Mountain West continues to cultivate opportunities for student-athletes to compete at the highest level, while fostering academic achievement and sportsmanship.

Now in its 21st year, the MW has been assertive in its involvement with the NCAA governance structure and has taken a leadership role in the overall administration of intercollegiate athletics. The Mountain West membership is comprised of 11 all-sport members: the United States Air Force Academy, Boise State University, Colorado State University, Fresno State, University of Nevada, University of New Mexico, San Diego State University, San José State University, UNLV, Utah State University and University of Wyoming. In addition, the University of Hawai‘i and Colorado College participate in the Mountain West as single-sport members in football and women’s soccer, respectively.

OFF THE FIELD

• The United States Air Force Academy is the only undergraduate institution in the world where students help design, build, test, launch and operate uniquely designed small satellites utilized in accomplishing real Department of Defense missions. USAFA currently manages three operational satellites in orbit.

• Boise State and San Diego State were named two of the most innovative na-tional universities in the country for 2019 in a U.S. News and World Report survey of higher education leaders (T45th).

• Fort Collins, Colorado (Colorado State) and Logan, Utah, (Utah State) are ranked in the top 25 in CollegeRanker.com’s annual “The 50 Best College Towns to Live in Forever” - Fort Collins No. 3 and Logan No. 25.

• Colorado State’s Professional Veterinary Medicine Program is currently ranked No. 3 in the nation, based on the most recent ranking by U.S. News and World Report. It has held a spot among the top three vet schools for at least two decades.

• New Mexico has been granted a Top Secret Facility Clearance from the Department of Defense and is entrusted with conducting classified and export controlled research.

• San Diego State students are graduating at record high rates across all seven colleges. SDSU now ranks No. 1 nationally in graduation rate performance, based on U.S. News and World Report’s most recent college rankings.

• San José State College of Engineering Professor Ahmed Banafa has extensive experience in research, operations and management, with focus on IoT, Blockchain, Cybersecurity and AI. He was named the No. 1 tech voice to fol-low, technology fortune teller and influencer by LinkedIn in 2018.

• In late 2018, UNLV was elevated to R1 “very high research activity” status by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. UNLV is now in the top three percent of more than 4,000 institutions nationwide. Addi-tionally, New Mexico is also an RI research institution. Only 115 institutions in the country hold this distinction.

• Utah State was named one of the top 10 Fulbright U.S. Scholarship-pro-ducing Research Institutions by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.

• This year, Wyoming will open its $105 million Engineering Education and Research Building, a state-of-the-art facility including reconfigurable research laboratories, active-learning classrooms, an active-learning wet laboratory, a drilling and completions simulation laboratory, an advanced manufacturing laboratory and many other rooms.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:

The Mountain West truly operates at the peak of excellence and we look forward to showcasing that through this campaign.” - Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson

“As a founding member of the Mountain West Conference, Air Force is proud to be part of the ‘At The Peak’ initiative. Collectively we have accomplished a great deal as a conference to date and we look forward to building upon those achievements in our bright future.” - Air Force Director of Athletics Nathan Pine

“Colorado State takes pride in being an original member at the inception of the Mountain West, and we are excited to be ‘At the Peak’ with our fellow member institutions. There is much that stands tall around the Mountain West, and we look forward to playing our role as we share stories of excellence throughout this campaign.” - Colorado State Director of Athletics Joe Parker
