“The best part of the CECP Accelerate Communities was that we came away with tangible recommendations and action items for the larger group, and for any company, the tools to accelerate movement on those issues.”HEATHER NESLE, NEW YORK LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY

“Over the past twenty years, CSR has changed from what a company gives to what a company does. Employees have played a critical role in this shift—serving their communities and causes that are aligned with their passions and company values.” TIMOTHY J. MCCLIMON, AMERICAN EXPRESS

“We are considered a sustainable company, but we became aware that conventional cotton was a serious polluter and our best-seller was a cotton pant. I gathered people and talked about the problem. Going organic would cost us 15% more, but we split the cost with our customer. It broke open the idea of how much pollution comes from clothing, with only 1% of the world’s cotton as organic.”EILEEN FISHER, EILEEN FISHER

“As an electric company, we recognize that we play a role in climate change and carbon emissions. But this can be an opportunity for those who want it to be, because our actions can actually move the needle. Since 2014, we have reduced our total carbon emissions by 37%, equivalent to taking 5.5 million cars off the roads or almost double the impact of the 3.5 million electric vehicles on the road.” MAURICO GUTIERREZ, NRG

“For those in a position of helping, I ask that you examine what “competition” means for the people in which you are investing your resources. When you’re making investments, think of other organizations with similar missions as potential partners, instead of competitors. I know that Feeding America will. We can do this together.” CLAIRE BABINEAUX-FONTENOT,

FEEDING AMERICA

“Sometimes a crisis can bring out your best thinking. The financial downturn prompted a lot of soul searching on how we view our role in society. As a result, we revamped our philanthropic strategy and tied it more closely to our approach to responsible growth.” KERRY SULLIVAN, BANK OF AMERICA

“It’s a miraculous moment when you see that somebody can actually eradicate a problem that is afflicting hundreds of thousands of today’s young men and women, and does so with such great ease.” LORD DR. MICHAEL HASTINGS, KPMG

“We have not progressed as a country as fast as we can to address addiction. Businesses all across America are bearing the burden of lower productivity, higher turnover, and higher costs. And people are being silenced and shamed. Help us drag addiction out from the shadows, into our hearts. I can’t imagine a more perfect expression of humanity.” GARY MENDELL, SHATTERPROOF

“Everything we did to reinvent the company began internally, using kindness, guided by math, to gain the trust of our employees. Once we saw an impact with our people, it cascaded to impact our consumers, with an 90% NPS score. Ultimately, our shareholders benefited through topline growth and risk management, such as 90%+ declines in workers compensation claims, which brought triple-digit equity returns.” JAMES RHEE, ASHLEY STEWART

The CECP Data Insights team presented findings from Investing in Society, an assessment of corporate purpose. A variety of indicators, including Giving in Numbers, the unrivaled leader in benchmarking on corporate social investment, show that corporate purpose is on the rise.

CECP Research Community investments remain strong and continue to grow: Median total giving increased by 10%, from $23.2 million to $25.5 million (2016 vs. 2018). Also, six out of ten companies increased total giving by at least 2% in the last three years.

Measurement of business value of employee engagement and community investments are aligned, with opportunity for growth: The percentages of companies that measured the business value of community investments in 2018 through employee and brand/customer metrics (43% and 33% respectively) were slightly higher than the percentage of companies that measured the business value of employee engagement initiatives in 2018 (30%).

Employee Engagement reflected mixed performance: Volunteer participation rates continued increasing, along with the percentage of companies offering more volunteer programs with some level of schedule flexibility and access for employees. However, the monetary value of employee monetary matching-gift contributions decreased in the last three years (-6%). When polled about this trend, the Summit audience provided insight that the two potential reasons for this decrease were: reductions in budgets (e.g., lowering match ratio) and employees giving at lower amounts.

Shannon Schuyler - Principal, Chief Purpose Officer and Responsible Business Leader of PwC US; President of the PwC Charitable Foundation, Inc.

Chief Executives for Corporate Purpose (CECP) is a CEO-led coalition that believes that a company’s social strategy — how it engages with key stakeholders including employees, communities, investors, and customers — determines company success.

Founded in 1999 by actor and philanthropist Paul Newman and other business leaders to create a better world through business, CECP has grown to a movement of more than 200 of the world’s largest companies that represent $6.6 trillion in revenues, $21.2 billion in social investment, 14 million employees, 23 million hours of employee engagement, and $15 trillion in assets under management. CECP helps companies transform their social strategy by providing customized connections and networking, counsel and support, benchmarking and trends, and awareness building and recognition.
