All-Time vs. FSU...Florida State leads the all-time series, 35-4, with all games played in Boston College’s ACC era. The two sides have met for 37 regular season games and two ACC Championship con-tests. The Eagles are 3-15 all-time in Tallahassee and won the series opener, 8-5, in 2017.

Last Time They Met...The Eagles were swept by the Seminoles at home last sea-son beginning with an 11-inning, 13-12 game at the Harrington Athletics Village. Boston College overcame an 8-1 deficit in the middle of the fifth; outscoring Florida State, 9-2 through the ninth inning as Anthony Maselli tied the game with a two-run double in the ninth. FSU put three runs on the board in the top half of the 11th, but BC rallied for two in the bottom half; getting the tying run to third. Game two served as the Eagles’ annual ALS Awareness Game and was played at Fen-way Park in front of 5,433 fans.

By the Numbers: The Eagles vs. The Noles...Jake Alu: Went 2-for-5 with three runs and got the win in a scoreless-inning, stranding two (3/10/17)... Jack Cunning-ham: .357 (5-for-14) in four games and three starts with a three-hit, four-RBI game (4/20/18)... Brian Dempsey: .333 (5-for-15) in six starts with a .474 OBP.

Against the Ranked...The Eagles are 2-4 against ranked opponents this season having defeated No. 8 Louisville (3/10) and No. 20 Clemson (3/24). The win over the Cardinals marked BC’s first win over a ranked team and first over a ranked team on the road since defeating No. 21 Virginia (3/16/18). Boston College has picked up two wins vs. ranked teams in each of the last three sea-sons and went 10-9 vs. the ranked in 2016.

Home Openers...Boston College defeated Holy Cross (3/12) to improve to 21-13 in home openers on record dating back to 1986. In 2015, BC defeated NC State, 3-1, in its home opener, which was played in Northborough. BC also defeated Wake Forest in its home opener in 2014, but the game was played at Northeastern. Prior to this season, the last true home-opening win was 7-4 over Connecticut in 2013 at Shea Field. Prior to the opening of the Harrington Athletics Village in 2018, BC played six its last 21 home openers away from its own home ballpark.

ACC Openers...BC is 4-10 all-time in ACC openers, beginning with a 2-1 loss at No. 22 NC State in 2006. The Eagles are 2-7 under head coach Mike Gambino. Boston College has faced a ranked opponent in 13 of 14 ACC openers and a top-10 foe each of the last four seasons and nine overall.

BC vs. the SEC...Boston College’s 12-3 win over Kentucky (3/6) marked the first for the Eagles vs. an SEC foe since defeating Auburn (2/21/04). More recently, BC beat Missouri (2/28/10), while the Tigers were members of the Big 12. Boston College evened its all-time record against the Wildcats at 1-1; handing UK its first loss in its brand-new Kentucky Proud Park. The win marked the third for the ACC over the SEC in 2019.

Up Next...The Eagles host a pair of midweek games against Massachu-setts (4/2) in the Beanpot semifinal and Hartford (4/3).

Head Coach Mike Gambino

Mike Gambino, a 1999 Boston College graduate, was named head baseball coach on July 19, 2010. He brought the Eagles to the program’s first NCAA Tour-nament in seven years in 2016.

Last season, Gambino and the Eagles went 17-32. Four players were selected in the MLB Draft and freshman Chris Galland earned All-ACC Third Team.

In 2017, the Eagles returned to the ACC Championship, the first time they went to the conference tournament in back-to-back years since 2009-10. BC won 10 of its last 15 ACC games with sweeps over ND and NC State. Gambino guided the 2016 Eagles to 35 wins, the most since 2005, tying for the second most in program his-tory. They tallied 13 ACC wins and their six ACC series victories set a school record. BC swept the Oxford Regional to advance to the program’s first Super Re-gional. BC earned a national ranking for the first time in school history, ending the season in the top 25. For his efforts, Gambino was named the ABCA Northeast Region Coach of the Year. Gambino saw Justin Dunn garner All-America third-team and Jacob Stevens collect freshman All-America. Stevens picked up NEIBA Freshman of the Year, while Dunn was named to the All-ACC Third Team. In 2016 and 2015, Gambino mentored two first-round draft picks: Dunn, 19th overall by the Mets in 2016, and Chris Shaw, 31st by the Giants. It was the first time in program history the Eagles saw back-to-back first rounders. Overall, 23 players have been drafted in Gambino’s head coaching tenure. Gambino, who was an assistant at BC from 2003-05, came from Virginia Tech where he spent four years as an assistant under former BC coach, Pete Hughes. Pri-or to working in Blacksburg, Gambino spent two years as a regional scout for the Detroit Tigers. Gambino played for BC from 1997-2000. He hit .313 with 22 doubles, eight homers, 87 RBI and 117 runs. The Garrison, N.Y., native was a first-team All-Big East, All-New England and All-Northeast pick. Gambino played two seasons in the Red Sox organization.

Gambino received his bachelor’s degree from the Heights in English and theology. He lives in Needham, Mass., with his wife, Jill, and their children, Sonny and Callahan.

BC has claimed 13 Beanpot Championship; most recently in 2017, which was the Eagles’ third in a row. Last season, Boston College fell to Harvard in the semis, 7-4, in 11 innings. The Eagles bounced back to take the consolation game from the Minutemen, 9-2.

As a team, Boston College swiped 92 bags in 2018. The Eagles ranked second in the ACC behind Louisville and 21st in the nation. BC averaged 1.88 per game; good enough for second in the league and 12th in the NCAA. Three Eagles tallied 19 stolen bases or more as Gal-land led the way with 28. Five freshman pitchers have accounted for 59.2 (34.9%) of BC’s 207 innings pitched. RHP Joe Mancini is 2-3 with a 5.11 ERA in 24.2 in-nings with opponents hitting .271. RHP Mason Pelio (3-1, 2.15) tossed seven innings of one-run ball at EKU (3/2) to be-come the first BC freshman to pitch seven or more and allow one run or less since Jacob Stevens vs. Louisville (4/22/16).

Shades of ‘16...Dan Metzdorf became the first opening day starter to pitch seven innings or more with no earned runs since Mike King vs. NIU (2016). Sal Frelick was the first BC freshman to ho-mer in his debut since Gian Martellini in that same game vs. NIU (2016). Going further back in the record books, BC start-ed two freshmen (Frelick and Cody Morissette) for the first time on opening day since the Eagles put Chris Shaw, Logan Hoggarth and Joe Cronin in the lineup in 2013.
