2019 Annual Report
2
The American Cancer Society estimated the state of Nebraska will see nearly 9,800 cancer cases diagnosed in 2019. Of those, nearly 3,600 will result in death. That is simply not acceptable, and at Methodist, we’re striving to improve survival rates through early detection, clinical trial research and new cancer-fighting technology.
Our new Mobile 3D Mammography coach took to the streets late 2018 to bring important early detection screenings to women in the Omaha area. With stops at clinics that offer care to the uninsured and underinsured, as well as corporations that understand the importance of a healthy workforce, the mobile mammography coach has been a great success. Screenings have resulted in the detection of a number of breast cancers, and in some instances, the coach offered women their first screening opportunity. We’re happy to report that 2020 is shaping up to be busier than ever for the coach.
Breast cancer patients and others facing cancer diagnoses are among the many who participate in our clinical trial program. We pride ourselves on offering more patient-centered clinical trials than any other health system in the region. In 2019, we screened nearly 4,000 patients for participation with nearly 900 becoming eligible. This matters to our current and future patients. Clinical trial programs are difference-makers in the fight against cancer, and we’ll continue to expand our offerings.
We are constantly striving to improve survival rates.

Our cancer-fighting efforts were enhanced in 2019 with the installation of a new linear accelerator that is bigger and faster – meaning more capabilities and precision during treatment. One of the exciting treatment options is stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) technology that uses precise radiation beams for treatment of tumors and other lesions of the brain.
We’ll never stop fighting and exploring technologies and treatments for our patients. A cancer diagnosis is never expected, and cancer treatment is daunting. We strive every day to give our providers the tools they need to fight this disease and provide each patient with the care, comfort and support necessary during their cancer journey. We are pleased to report our 2018 findings and achievements, demonstrating this committment.

Satisfaction surveys are provided post nutrition education talk. Participants are encouraged to provide feedback and of the participants responding, they evaluated the nutrition talk effectiveness as the following. YTD September 2018:
n 99% of participants felt staff communicated clearly and answered questions.
n 98% of participants plan on adopting changes as a result of information, found it a worthwhile use of their time, and that it was a useful addition to their treatment and/or recovery.
n 100% of participants would recommend services to friends.
The Project Pink’d events collect pre and post intervention surveys. Participants are asked a series of questions on how they feel about their food and/or lifestyle choices. An example of a food choice would be eating the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day. An example of a lifestyle choice would be, participating in regular physical activity. They are asked to indicate the extent to which they agree or disagree with each statement making the choice in terms of how they feel right now, not what they have felt in the past or would like to feel. Pre intervention survey data collected on participants YTD August 2018:

2018 Screening Programs
11
1. All participants who attend a community screening receive a thank-you letter with information and contact numbers for the cancer prevention program and Methodist Health System. A letter is given to them as they leave the screening.
2. Any participant with an abnormal finding gets an individualized letter reminding them of the findings and recommendation to contact their personal health care provider within one to two weeks after screening. If they don’t list a personal healthcare provider, information about the Methodist Health System physician referral line is provided. If the participant has listed a healthcare provider and signed a medical release of information, a letter is sent to the physician along with a copy of the screening results.
3. Any participant with an abnormal finding will receive a phone call from the cancer prevention staff within one month of screening to determine if they have had follow up, if they needed assistance with follow up, and/or results of follow up.
4. Notes and copy of contacts are kept with screening charts. Screening charts are kept for one year in the cancer prevention department and then are archived.
