Dear High Risk Hope Family,

In 2019, High Risk Hope (HRH) supported nearly 2,000 families facing the most challenging time of their lives. 2019 also saw the delivery of the 10,000th HRH Bed Rest Basket/NICU Napsack to families hospitalized surrounding the premature birth of a child. These momentous milestones would not have been possible without the support of our incredible volunteers, donors, and HRH families.

A record number of volunteer hours were logged in 2019, with over 2,500 hours selflessly given to help make the lives of families easier during uncertain times. Volunteers ranged from a local bank branch that collected over 800 children’s books to students dedicating volunteer time during their spring break to groups like Project Helping devoting time monthly to HRH.

Other milestones in 2019 include expanding our Bereavement Box program to all our hospitals and shipping HRH Bundles to hospitals in five different states. HRH accomplished all this thanks to over $380,000 in cash and in-kind gifts given by our loyal community in 2019.

As the beginning months of 2020 have brought unprecedented change to our lives with the outbreak of the COVID-19 coronavirus, babies continue to be born too soon, women continue to be placed on hospital bed rest, and HRH continues to support the families who need us most. Your support helps us strive toward our goal to reach every woman and family needing our programs. Thank you for your loyalty and for truly making a difference in the lives of thousands of families each year.

Sincerely,

Heather Barrow Founder and Board Chair

HIGH RISK HOPE HIGHLIGHTS

Mission 37 HRH raised over $42,000 in the spring of 2019 when our amazing HRH supporters joined a top-secret mission: #Mission 37. The mission: raise over $37,000 to support women staying pregnant to 37 weeks, which is considered full-term. Mission accomplished!

Jersey Mike’s Subs Month of Giving HRH was the Jersey Mike’s Subs 2019 Month of Giving partner for 37 West Central Florida locations. Thanks to this community and our Jersey Mike’s Subs restaurant owners, HRH received a record$120,559 from the 2019 Month of Giving!

Tot Trot HRH's seventh annual Tot Trot presented by Jersey Mike's Subs was held in November during Prematurity Awareness Month. 600+ Tot Trotters walked, ran, and strolled down the Miracle Mile, helping to raise over $83,000.

HRH Calendar The sixth annual HRH Calendar contest was a huge success! Dozens of babies entered, and over 6,900 votes were tallied to select the HRH preemies featured in this year’s calendar which will be delivered to over 2,000 families in 2020.

VolunteersHRH could not support 2,000 families per year without hundreds of dedicated volunteers. Volunteers assist with everything from hospital bag deliveries, bag assemblies and knitting blankets to assisting in events. HRH received over 2,500 hours of volunteer service in 2019, which includes over 120 hours of service from Utica College of Nursing students through a partnership with HRH.

Bundles Across the Country HRH’s Bed Rest Bundle and NICU Baby Bundle programs were designed with the ultimate goal of encouraging families both before and after the birth of a premature infant. In 2019, HRH shipped bundles to Orange County, CA; Phoenix, AZ; Dallas, TX; Ocala, FL; and Indianapolis, IN. Smaller and much easier to ship, HRH Bundles help support families across the country.

reading to him in the NICU....We absolutely love High Risk Hope. Receiving the bags and having the simplest reassurances that you are supported and cared for means the world. Having a baby early is never easy, especially when you don't get to go home with your baby, but knowing that you are not alone makes you feel like you too can overcome this hurdle."

- Laura, Henry's Mom

HRH PREEMIE HENRY LUKSIK BORN OCTOBER 22, 2014 AT 33 WEEKS

Henry was born over six weeks early due to his mom developing preeclampsia. After a routine doctor's appointment showed severe preeclampsia, Henry's mom was sent to triage at Tampa General Hospital and admitted. Two days later, she was released under light bed rest with instructions to monitor her blood pressure. Her blood pressure increased even higher, and two days later she was back in the hospital. She was induced, but Henry's heart rate dropped and he was born via emergency c-section. Henry spent twelve days in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for jaundice, but otherwise was very healthy. He was eating and breathing on his own. Today, Henry is a healthy and brilliantly smart five-year-old who loves every book he reads.

"When Henry was born and in the NICU we had never heard of High Risk Hope before. It was not until we received the NICU Napsack in our room that we heard about this incredible organization. It was so nice to receive the bag of such relevant and amazing gifts during this extremely emotional time. This small token made us feel important and special as we were now facing the hurdles of this new and uncharted territory. I did not feel so alone anymore. Our favorite gift in the bag was the book. We had not planned for our son to be born so early so we did not have anything prepared. We loved

ABOUT HIGH RISK HOPE

This year, High Risk Hope (HRH) will serve 500 pregnant women on hospital bed rest and 2,000 premature infants, but many more need our services. Over 22,500 babies (10%) will be born prematurely in Florida in 2020. With your help, we can give more families the support they need during their hospitalization for a high risk pregnancy or after the birth of a premature infant. We cannot do it without you, so we are asking you to get involved. You can join the fight for preemies by becoming a HRH Calendar or Tot Trot Sponsor and make an impact that will last a lifetime for babies in our state.

the heartbeatISSUE 13, WINTER 2019

Barbara and her husband always looked forward to being parents. When they found out they were expecting, they were over the moon. Unfortunately, their joy was short-lived as all the typical prenatal testing returned abnormal. Barbara went for every test imaginable and visited each expert in their field. The doctors and specialists were unable to give them any answers, and they were told to prepare for the worst.

Camila surprised her family and arrived early at 34 weeks, weighing just 3lbs 2 oz. After she was born, she was immediately taken to the NICU at John's Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, FL. It was discovered that Camila was born with a Complete Atrioventricular Canal Heart defect or complete AV Canal. Her family’s world suddenly changed knowing that she would need not one but two heart surgeries to repair the defect. After months of trying every medical intervention to help her gain weight and go home, Camila was transferred to Florida Hospital Orlando where she had her first surgery at three months old. A band was placed around her pulmonary artery which prevented access fluid from getting into her lungs. After the surgery, she was able to breathe with no respiratory support and her family finally held her without any wires.

On January 2, 2019, Camila came home after spending a total of 104 days in the hospital and celebrating her first major holidays in the NICU. Her family lived at two different Ronald McDonald Houses and her dad made the drive to the hospitals on the weekends and after work. Camila had her second open heart surgery on August 30, 2019 in Orlando. The surgery was very successful; however, her recovery was longer and more difficult than expected. She spent 18 total days in PICU recovering. Today, Camila is full of energy and every day is a new exciting adventure. She loves meeting people and making new friends everywhere she goes.

“The HRH NICU Napsack full of goodies lifted our spirits. We loved receiving the milestone cards and used them at every opportunity. Thanks to the cards, I was able to document parts of Camila’s journey that may have never occurred to me.””

High Risk Hope has six programs that support families during an emotional hospitalization surrounding the birth of a premature baby. HRH hosts these programs at six hospitals in West Central Florida, serving over 2,000 families annually.

HOSPITAL HEADLINES

The Sarasota Memorial Hospital NICU Reunion brought together families who had stories of hope to tell. Parents showed off their sweet miracle babies and met with their favorite doctors and nurses. Many HRH families stopped by our table to say hi. Thank you to all who joined us!

The Tampa General Hospital Foundation, through the generous donation of Betsy and Drew Graham and Tampa Bay Steel, treated 65 HRH kids and parents to see Disney on Ice at the Amalie Arena. Our HRH families enjoyed a truly magical night, far away from the stress of the hospital and doctors appointments. Thank you to the TGH Foundation, Betsy and Drew Graham, and Tampa Bay Steel.

Bereavement Box ProgramSadly, not all NICU families leave the hospital with their baby. With the guidance of one HRH mom’s thoughtful considerations, we have created resources and items that provide comfort to these families during this difficult time. In 2019, HRH expanded it’s Bereavement Box Program to Advent Health Tampa, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital, and Mease Countryside Hospital.

2019 Tot Trot HRH’s seventh annual Tot Trot presented by Jersey Mike’s Subs was held on November 16th at Gadsden Park in Tampa in correlation with World Prematurity Day. WTSP 10 News anchor Courtney Robinson kicked off the family-friendly 3K and over 600 trotters walked, ran, and strolled to raise awareness about the premature birth epidemic and celebrate how far our HRH VIPs (very important preemies) have come. Congratulations to all of our fundraiser raffle winners. We are grateful for each team that took place in the walk this year. Our Top Fundraising Team was Holly and Michael Stallings with team HANK You Very Much, with back to back wins in 2018 and 2019. The team banner competition was a tight one, but the Schultz family snagged a win with their incredible Power Preemies banner. The Micheli family took home the first ever Team Spirit Award. Thank you to our Tot Trotters, sponsors, donors and volunteers who helped us raise over $83,000. The 2020 Tot Trot will be on November 14, 2020 and we hope you join us for the celebration!

CORPORATE SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

FUNDRAISING SUCCESS

OPPORTUNITIES TO GIVE BACK High Risk Hope’s program costs total $350,000 each year, or roughly $175 per NICU Napsack or Bed Rest Basket provided to each of the 2,000 families supported by HRH annually. We could not fulfill our mission without generous gifts from our donors, families, and corporate sponsors. Listed below are ways you or your company can give to HRH so that we can continue providing vital support to families enduring trauma surrounding the birth of a premature baby.

100+ Women Who Care South Tampa100+ Women Who Care South Tampa selects a local charity each quarter to receive a generous donation of $100 from each of its 100+ members. In May of 2019, HRH was chosen to receive $11,100 to support our NICU Dinner program. Sandra and Isaac Carlin, HRH mom and Very Important Preemie, presented to the group about the impact that NICU Dinners and HRH had on them when Isaac spent 104 days in the St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital NICU. Thanks to 100+ WWCST, many more families will receive important peer-to-peer support that they need to stay strong during a stressful NICU stay.

MagnifyGoodHigh Risk Hope was selected for a capacity-building grant by MagnifyGood, a communications consultancy magnifying the work of organizations that are changing the world for good in the areas of philanthropy, communities and causes. Through the grant, HRH received 40 hours of one-on-one consulting services tailored to its immediate communications needs. HRH can’t wait to roll out new communication strategies in 2020 that will elevate our community impact.

Tot Trot SponsorsIn November 2020, HRH will host the 8th Annual Tot Trot, a family-friendly 3k that raises funds to benefit HRH. November is prematurity awareness month across the globe, and you can join the fight to prolong high risk pregnancies and improve the outcomes for premature infants in our state. Sponsorships range from $1,000 to $7,000. For more information, email [email protected]

Calendar Sponsors The HRH Calendar features photos and stories of children whose mothers were on hospital bed rest and/or were born premature. HRH distributes over 2,000 HRH Calendars to hospitalized families in its Bed Rest Baskets and NICU Napsacks each year, inspiring hope for those experiencing trauma surrounding the premature birth of their baby. Sponsoring a month in the HRH Calendar is $500 and includes your logo on that month. For more information, email [email protected]

NICU Dinner Sponsors HRH provides monthly NICU Dinners at St. Joseph’s Women’s Hospital. The first Friday of each month, HRH arranges for a local restaurant to provide a meal to families with an infant in neonatal intensive care. These meals provide comfort, nourishment, and an opportunity for vital peer-to-peer support. If you are interested in providing a meal, please contact [email protected].

Facebook Fundraisers Facebook Fundraisers are an excellent way to crowdfund for a good cause. HRH is a vetted and registered nonprofit with Facebook and as such, anyone with a Facebook account can fundraise on our behalf. Simply visit the High Risk Hope Facebook page and click on “Create a Fundraiser.” It’s that easy! In 2019, HRH supporters raised over $10,000 via Facebook fundraisers.

Outback BowlThe Outback Bowl generously donated a total of $20,000 to HRH in 2019. These funds helped sponsor the Tot Trot’s Wall of Hope, a month in the 2020 HRH Calendar, and three months of NICU Napsack deliveries to one of our partner hospitals. Thank you to HRH Board Member, Tracie Domino, who made this year’s Outback Bowl gift possible.
