Normally, we would take this opportunity to share a story from the past year, but we would be remiss not to address the current events of our world. While 2020 has been a trying time for many, we are inspired by stories of our community members, like Drew Stein, who stepped up to help clients of Eras.

Drew Stein, a medical student in his final year at the Medical College of Wisconsin, was scheduled to travel to India for a rotation in April when the trip was canceled due to COVID-19. With his rotation canceled, Drew looked for ways to get out of the house and discovered volunteer opportunities with Eras Senior Network. Drew began volunteering for Eras in several capacities including grocery shopping for seniors, driving clients to medical appointments, and placing weekly wellness calls.

“It’s been really satisfying to be able to interact with the seniors and help them

in ways that could be potentially scary during this uncertain time,” said Drew.

Not only is Drew helping keep our community’s seniors and adults with disabilities safe during the COVID-19 situation, but he is creating meaningful relationships. Drew volunteered to grocery shop for a particular Eras client on multiple occasions, and would discuss her grocery list with her over the phone. This woman shared that she felt as though Drew has become like a son to her and would like to stay in touch. “A lot of purpose comes from helping people,” said Drew, “and I’m super thankful for the opportunity.”

Eras Senior Network is extremely grateful for Drew and all of the longtime and new volunteers who are helping our community’s seniors and adults with disabilities during this difficult time. If you are in a position to help, we encourage you to volunteer.

Letter from Leadership

Thank you for taking the time to learn about Eras Senior Network, Inc. The following pages detail information about the programs and services provided by our agency during 2019.

2019 – A Year of ChangeThe Eras Board of Directors summarizes 2019 as a year of change. We moved our offices from the Barstow Building in downtown Waukesha to a new, larger space near I-94. The new office includes a 1,000 square foot community room that has been well-utilized for partnership meetings and presentations to seniors.

The year of 2019 also brought an opportunity to expand our mission and programs into neighboring Milwaukee County. Details of this expansion are available on pages 7 and 8.

We’re grateful to you for your support of the vital work done by Eras.

Thank you,

Kathy GaleExecutive Director,Eras Senior Network

Planned gifts are for people of all income levels. Even a modest amount or percentage of your estate, life insurance, or IRA account, can make an impact on the lives of seniors and adults with disabilities living in Milwaukee and Waukesha counties.

Aster Society

Anyone who informs us of a planned gift to Eras Senior Network is invited to join the Aster Society. Aster Society members will receive an aster pin and special recognition at yearly events. If you would like to join the Aster Society, please contact [email protected] or (262) 522-2404.

There are several impactful ways to establish a lasting gift to Eras Senior Network right now.

• Making an automatic monthly gift online.• Creating a fund through a foundation to support the programs of Eras.• Designating Eras as a beneficiary in your life insurance policy, IRA, or will – even 1% makes a

difference!

Most experts agree that nonprofit organizations should work

towards an endowment that is three times the amount

of its yearly operations budget.

Agency AmbassadorsThe Agency Ambassador program gathers experienced Eras volunteers to serve as representatives of our organization at community events. Not only does the Ambassador program help ensure Eras can be represented in more locations throughout the community, it offers leadership opportunities for our senior volunteers.

Ambassadors represent Eras by:• Recruiting volunteers and sharing our mission at outreach fairs• Presenting about Eras to local senior groups and congregations• Presenting or assisting with our S.T.O.P. Senior Frauds and Scams program• Delivering updated agency materials around the community• Assisting with Eras Special Events

“Facilitating Stop Frauds and Scams sessions (as an Agency Ambassador) is

very fulfilling. Helping people understand that they have the ability to thwart those

who are trying to steal someone else's money or identity is a great feeling!”

Community OutreachEras Stays Connected in the Community Through:

• Participation in Community Outreach Fairs • Presentations to Congregations • Senior living communities • Civic groups • Corporations• Contributing content to 50Plus News Magazine through monthly articles about seniors • Interviews on local radio shows • Hosting a booth at 50PlusFest • Providing area congregations, senior living communities, and other service providers with

AdvocacyAdvocacy means to speak up, to plead the case of another, or to fight for a cause. Derived from the Latin word "advocare", which means "coming to the aid of someone", advocacy is an important function of most nonprofit organizations. It describes a wide range of expressions, actions, and activities that seek to influence outcomes directly affecting the lives of the people served by the organization.

Our Areas of Focus in Advocacy:

“Scams are like viruses; they are constantly evolving to become resistant to current remedies, says Kathy Stokes, director of the AARP Fraud Watch Network. During the COVID-19 pandemic, scam artists utilized scare tactics to prey on seniors with virus-related scams.

Isolated seniors, seniors with memory loss, and even active, well-educated seniors are targets for scam artists. To ensure that fewer seniors fall victim to a fraud or scam, Eras launched S.T.O.P. Senior Frauds and Scams in 2016, a presentation providing education and resources to empower seniors and their caregivers to better recognize and avoid scams.

New Resource: The Wisconsin Elder Abuse Hotline Program is a toll-free hotline available for community members and victims to contact for assistance in obtaining needed resources and making referrals to local authorities. Wisconsin Elder Abuse Hotline: 1-833-586-0107

S.T.O.P. is supported by the Wisconsin Consumer AntiFraud Trust, a fund within the Greater Milwaukee Foundation. The initiative involves peer to peer education, with trained senior ambassadors and industry professionals educating seniors and caregivers about frauds and scams, and encouraging them to report new frauds.

COVID-19 Scams: As of May 14, 2020, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) logged nearly 26,300 fraud

complaints related to the COVID-19 outbreak. That is an incredibly high number considering the virus

didn’t begin to impact the United States until mid-February. Victims have reported losing $33.8 million.

Examples of COVID-19 related scams include selling of fraudulent products like unapproved products

that claim to cure or prevent COVID-19, phony test kits and household cleaners, and surgical masks.

Scam artists also called victims requesting personal information like a Social Security number, claiming

this would ensure they would be sent their stimulus check through the federal CARES Act.

The Mobility Management Program works to design and deliver transportation services that start and end with the customer. Eras Mobility Manager helps to inform and connect seniors and adults with disabilities to the mobility options that best suit their needs.

Bus Buddy ProgramThe Bus Buddy Program is a complimentary resource to help first-time riders became familiar and comfortable with riding Waukesha Metro Transit. Over the past year, Eras Mobility Manager worked with client, Sheri and her service dog Twister to independently travel using public transit. Sheri and Twister are now able to travel self-sufficiently to multiple places throughout Waukesha County:

“I’ve always wanted to be independent and control my own life. Eras Bus Buddy Program has given me

that. I am so grateful”.

“Learning to use public transit has allowed me to socialize with others and become an active member of the community. I didn’t have that before”.

In 2010, the caregiver support ratio was more than 7 potential caregivers for every person in the high-risk years of 80-plus.

In 2030, the ratio is projected to decline sharply to 4 to 1; and it is expected to further fall to less than 3 to 1 in 2050.

Partnerships

Community PartnershipsEras Senior Network is going strong thanks to partnerships formed with the communities of Waukesha and Milwaukee counties. Community partnerships include financial support and volunteer service received each year from area corporations and civic groups. Understanding that partnerships work both ways, Eras strives to provide value to partners.

Value Provided by Eras:

• Caregiving Support: According to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP, approximately 34.2 million Americans (11% US population) have provided unpaid care to an adult age 50 or older in the last 12 months. Eras helps lighten the load of caregivers by providing transportation, friendly visiting, and seasonal yard services at no charge to our clients in need.

• Marketing: Sponsors of fundraising events will be listed on the event's printed materials and web page.

• Volunteer Opportunities: Fun and impactful volunteer opportunities for groups and individuals include seasonal yard clean up and packing gifts for the Holiday Giving Program.

• Education: Eras provides informative presentations to partners about services, volunteer opportunities, and the S.T.O.P. Senior Frauds and Scams program.

CongregationsIn 1991, faith communities came together to put their faith into action by serving their community and forming our Faith in Action Program under the agency name of Interfaith Caregiving Network. The Faith in Action Program contains 5 building blocks to develop a network of caring volunteers who provide neighborly assistance to seniors and adults with disabilities.

Today, Eras still heavily relies on partnerships with congregations throughout Waukesha and Milwaukee counties to support and sustain programs in our community. Congregations support Eras through annual financial contributions, volunteer recruitment, participation in our special projects, and inviting Eras to present to their members during or after service, or to one of their special interest groups.

“We love our partnership with Eras. Through Eras, RiverGlen demonstrates our love of God and others through acts of kindness. Each year we encourage our entire church to go and serve the seniors in our communities with spring and fall yard clean up. This seemingly simple service allows us to help others in a meaningful way.
