WELCOME!

While our leadership has grown and evolved over time, for those of us who have been involved since that very first festival, we were looking to make an impact in the community by creating opportunities for women’s art to be seen, heard, worn, and experienced.

Siren Nation was born out of the desire to showcase the unique art being created by women throughout the Northwest. We have grown Siren Nation over the past 13 years from a weekend festival into a non-profit organization that creates year-round performance and exhibition opportunities for women — in all the arts — while paying homage to the women in history who have paved the way for us.

This year’s festival showcase of musicians is inspiring. Our lineup includes an amazing array of talented women; each one already a star either locally or nationally. We are equally excited about our installation of over 40 visual artists for the exhibit, “Radical Revolution” in Portland City Hall and our annual Art & Craft Fair, with more than 35 fabulous crafters participating.

We are excited to bring back “Hell Hath No Funny: The Siren Nation Comedy Showcase” to the festival this year!

Siren Nation also continues our tradition of hosting a day of free

arts workshops and panels for the community at the McMenamins Kennedy School that we hope you will enjoy, learn from, and be inspired by. We’ll have 25 women teaching and speaking on storytelling, collage, burlesque, podcasting, grant funding, social media, the music business, and cannabis and creativity.

Thank you for joining us in celebrating women in the arts and coming together. For those of you who are artists, please continue making your art and sharing it with us all. For those of you who appreciate the arts, it is imperative that you continue to go out and support women making art in our community.

We welcome individuals who self-identify as female, trans, or gender non-conforming to apply to and participate in all Siren Nation events.

We are always looking for creatives to join our organization. If you would like to volunteer or join our board, please email us at [email protected].

If you like what you’ve experienced here at Siren Nation, we hope you will consider giving to us this holiday season. Together we can keep the arts alive and propel women to greater visibility!

Siren Nation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. You may donate online at www.sirennation.org.

In Art We Trust,

The Siren Nation Board of Directors

It’s hard to believe that this year marks the 13th Annual Siren Nation Festival!

@sirennation @sirennation

SIREN NATION IS A 100% VOLUNTEER RUN ORGANIZATION. Without a dedicated group of board members and committee members, who consistently give Siren Nation huge amounts of their time and energy, this festival and all of our fundraising efforts would not be possible. Deep gratitude for their dedication and tireless effort coordinating year-round events goes out to: December Carson Superstar, Anina Bennett, and Sue Cool. A special thank you to our comedy showcase organizer, Ali Reingold, to Glo Lamden-McCollough, last year’s Art & Craft Sale organizer; and to Val Egan, last year’s Visual Art Show organizer.

THANK YOU to the artists at our 2019 fundraiser concerts: the Billie Holiday tribute “Lady Sings the Blues,” and Dolly Parton tribute “Hoot Night.”

Great appreciation to the many musicians and artists who inspire and motivate us and help make Siren Nation happen by donating their time and talents throughout the year. You are an amazing group of artists who remind us constantly why Siren Nation is necessary and important. We are grateful to all the businesses and volunteers throughout the community that help make this event a reality and send a special thank you to all our friends and family who have supported us. We hope you will support those artists and businesses listed in our program.

HELL HATH NO FUNNY! COMEDY SHOWCASEFeaturing: Kate Murphy, Andy Iwancio, Katie Nguyen, Quinne Salameh and Susan Rice.

FRIDAY, 11/9 THE ALBERTA STREET PUB1036 NE Alberta Street, Portland9:00 PM • 21+ • $12

For years, Portland has been on the national map for amazing comedy. Our city is known to have more female produced comedy shows than any other local scene. This city is loaded with hilariously talented humans and we’ve handpicked some of our favorites for you!

SUSAN RICE: For over 35 years Susan Rice has worked as a stand up comic. She is one of Portland, OR’s original stand-ups, beginning in 1983 at the Leaky Roof Tavern. Her career as a comic has taken her all over the US and Canada, as well as the Caribbean and Mexico. She has appeared on HBO, Showtime, Comedy Central, A&E, ABC, CBS, and Fox. She

was more recently featured on Portlandia and named by Willamette Week “Portland’s Funniest Person.” Rice was recently Arsenio Hall’s opening act as well as Maria Bamford’s. She is familiar because she reminds everyone of an auntie they should check in on more often. Rice can be seen often at Harvey’s Comedy Club, her home club, or performing for various corporations or charity events. She is the co-founder of the podcast “Stop Me If I’ve Heard This.”

KATIE NGUYEN is a writer and comedian. Her writing has been featured in The New Yorker and she is a regular at Helium Comedy Club. She has performed at comedy festivals across the country and hosts the weekly show Earthquake Hurricane. Katie has twice been named one of the Portland Mercury’s Geniuses of Comedy and has taught comedy

classes and workshops at Portland Center Stage and Deep End Theater.

ANDY IWANCIO is a transgender gal comedian from Seattle who waxes poetics on being transgender, growing boobs, and then, subsequently, shaking those boobs because of her epilepsy. So, all of that, plus puns. She has opened for Whitmer Thomas, James Adomian, and Cameron Epsosito. Festival-wise, she has done Bumbershoot, Out of Bounds, Altercation,

Women in Comedy NW, Ha-Ha Harvest Festival, Intersections, and All-Jane. She also appeared in the HUMP! film-festival award-winning film “Queer Safari” and the Emmy award-winning movie “Star Wars Uncut.”

Comedian QUINNE SALAMEH self identifies as Bi-Racial, Queer, and extremely cheap so it’s gonna be a good time. Quinne is a new member of the “That’s What She Said” feminist comedy collective and was a performer on this year’s Portland Queer Comedy Festival. She brings good vibes but will shame you for your purchase of novelty hummus. You can

catch her on Shows all.

KATE MURPHY is a Portland comic, born and raised in Bozeman, MT. Kate Murphy wrote and co-produced the short film “A HUMP! Public Service Announcement” which won ‘best humor’ HUMP! Film Festival 2017. She’s been featured in Hell Yes Fest, The NW Women’s Comedy Festival, and was a finalist in Helium Comedy Club’s Portland’s Funniest Person 2018.

She was named one of the Portland Mercury’s Undisputed Geniuses of Comedy 2018, and is the current host of the Portland Mercury’s The I, Anonymous Show.

Ashleigh Flynn grew up in Kentucky and cut her teeth on local bluegrass

music. She arrived on the national Americana scene in 2008 with the release of her third record, American Dream, and continues playing national stages to critical acclaim with the release of her most recent studio effort A Million Stars (2013).

SATURDAY, 11/16KUINKA & LEMOLOMISSISSIPPI STUDIOS3939 N Mississippi Street, Portland9 PM • 21+ • $12 • mississippistudios.com

Lemolo is the Seattle dream pop project of songwriter Meagan Grandall. While the band has garnered comparisons to Cat Power, Feist, Beach House, and Warpaint, Lemolo’s growing buzz comes from a fresh and distinct tone that is truly their own. Led by Grandall on vocals, keys, and electric guitar, and accompanied by a talented host of Seattle musicians, the band

is known for their energy, edge, and ethereal beauty.Kuinka’s genre-defying music features several different lead singers, four-part harmony, and core elements of rock (lead guitar, synth, drums) flavored with eclectic folk instrumentation (cello, banjo, ukulele) and a driving dance beat. But through all of their sonic experimentation, the Seattle quintet’s songs and live shows are linked by an infectious energy that remains present in everything they do.
