INDIVIDUAL LESSONSIndividual Lessons at the Community Music School prepare students to express themselves musically and acquire the skills necessary to successfully participate in ensembles, perform in public, and enjoy a lifelong love of music. The goals and needs of each student are considered individually when placed with instructors or in programs.

RecitalsMembers of the Community Music School’s student body and faculty participate in more than 100 concerts and recitals throughout the year. School recitals are held on a monthly basis at the School’s main location on the Webster University campus, with piano accompaniment provided free of charge by the School. Many CMS faculty members also provide studio recitals for their individual students.

How to RegisterThe CMS has registration sessions before each semester to pair new students with teachers for individual instruction. By registering students in person, our staff is able to consider a student’s background, personality, personal motivation and goals, as well as specific needs or requirements, in order to place the student with the most appropriate instructor. Students may register after the registration dates by calling their preferred lesson location.

COMMUNITY MUSIC SCHOOL | 2019-2020 PROGRAMS (314)968-5939|www.webster.edu/cms

SUZUKI STRINGS PROGRAMThe Suzuki method of instruction is based on the philosophy and teaching of the late Japanese educator Dr. Shinichi Suzuki where young children learn to play the violin, viola, or cello the same way they learn to speak - by listening, imitating, and repeating sounds. Just as children learn to read after they learn to speak, Suzuki students learn note-reading after devel-oping aural skills and proper instrument posture. The parent attends lessons and group classes with the child, learns to play the instrument, and becomes the “home teacher.” Suzuki students listen to the recorded repertoire, attend weekly individual lessons, participate in bimonthly group classes, and spend time reviewing and polishing skills along with learning new material. Students participate in a variety of performance opportunities.

InstrumentsStudents enrolled in the Suzuki program will need their own instrument, and as “home teacher” the Suzuki parent will need his/her own violin/viola. (Cello parents will use their child’s instrument.) To ensure proper size and quality, please do not rent or purchase an instrument until you have been placed in the program and have consulted with your child’s teacher.

Suzuki Workshop WeekendA vital part of the Suzuki program is the biennial Suzuki Workshop Weekend - an intensive, two-day workshop for Suzuki violin, viola and cello students age 4 and up that brings nationally recognized teachers and clinicians to the Community Music School.

Suzuki EnsembleThe Suzuki Ensemble is comprised of students who have advanced to the highest level of accomplishment within the CMS Suzuki Program. The Suzuki Ensemble has performed in Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Wisconsin, and in 2006 performed in Europe. The ensemble has performed in elementary schools, retirement communities, on television, at Powell Symphony Hall, and at the Fox Theater with The Piano Guys and with Time for Three.

How to RegisterThose seeking Suzuki instruction must contact the CMS to add their names to the Suzuki Inquiry list. Invitations to attend parent orientation are sent prior to Fall and Spring semesters. The required three-Saturday parent orientation, for which a fee is charged, is held twice per academic year. Following completion of orientation, children are scheduled to begin lessons. Tuition for new students is pro-rated for the weeks following orientation. To receive an orientation invitation, please call 314-968-5939.
