• Read or listen to the story “Blue Bird and Coyote.”

• Think about the characters and the setting in the story.

Independent Reading

Choose a fiction book to read. Read independently. Good readers think about and observe the characters in the story, can describe their actions and the reasons for their actions.

Isolate Phonemes: Identify Vowel Sound

• You can identify the vowel sounds in one-syllable words.

• Look at the picture cards and say the name of each picture.

• Identify the vowel sound you hear in the middle of the following words.

Phonics/ Phonemic Awareness

r-Controlled Vowels or, ore The letters or and ore stand for the same r-controlled vowel sound. The letters or stand for the vowel sound in for. The letters ore stand for the same vowel sound as in more.

• Complete the activity by choosing the correct word the completes the sentence.

• Review yesterdays’ spelling words.

• Find the words with double consonant ll and use them in sentences.

Reading Lesson

Story Structure Things that happen in a story are called events and that the order in which they happen is the sequence. Identifying and describing important events in order helps readers understand a story better. You can use details in the text and pictures to remember the sequence of events in the story.

• Use the anchor chart to remember concepts on story structure.

• Read or listen to the story “Blue Bird and Coyote” again.

• Read the instructions and complete the graphic organizer. You can write sentences or draw an illustration.

Independent Reading

Choose a fiction book to read. Read independently. Good readers think about and observe how characters in the story find a resolution to the problem.

Phonological Awareness

Segment the Phonemes

• Ask an adult to say the words for you. Listen as they say the words.

• Let them ask you the questions in the box.

• Answer all the questions orally.

Phonics/ Phonemic Awareness

r-Controlled Vowels ar, or, and ore The letters ar stand for the vowel sound in car. The letters or and ore stand for the vowel sound in for and more. Every syllable has a vowel sound. You can break a long word into syllables to read it. First, find the vowel spellings. Then, divide between the two consonants. Blend each syllable, and then put them together.

• Choose and write the word that names each picture.

Spelling Spelling Words Practice You can read and spell words with the /ôr/ sound with or, as in fork, or with ore (a trigraph) at the end of a word, as in shore.

• Read your spelling words.

• Create or make your spelling word cards.

HFW High Frequency Words Practice

• Review your HFW.

• Complete the HFW chart activity!

Vocabulary Nouns

A noun that names a place tells where something is happening. A noun that names a thing tells what something is.

• Take a piece of paper and fold it into two.

• Label the first column nouns that name a place and the other column nouns that name things.

• Ask an adult assistance to write a list of nouns.

r-Controlled vowels er, ir, and ur

The r-controlled vowels er, ir, and ur stand for the same vowel sound. The words her, sir, and fur have the same r-controlled vowel sound but different spellings.

• Choose and write a word to name each picture.

Spelling Spelling Words Practice You can spell the /sh/ sound with sh, as in ship.

• Read and spell words that have CV pattern.

• Write each spelling word in the correct column.
