Michael J. Imburgia, M.D.Louisville Cardiology GroupDr. Michael J. Imburgia found-ed the Have a Heart founda-tion in March 2008 as a way to

provide free cardiovascular care to patients with heart problems. Have a Heart foundation pro-vides services to low-income, uninsured people in Louisville and the surrounding area. Services include echocardiography, nuclear stress test-ing, cardiac catheterization, PTCA/stents, pace-makers, defibrillators and vascular testing. Dr. Imburgia helps people who have few options for their care, particularly when it comes to highly specialized care for conditions such as coronary artery disease, heart failure and valve issues.

Patrick Murphy, M.D.Department of Family & Geriatric Medicine, University of LouisvilleDr. Patrick Murphy started the home care program at UofL Geriatrics, which allows el-derly patients to have better

accessibility to healthcare. In addition, he has trained family and internal medicine residents and geriatric medicine fellows in the care of older adults. Dr. Murphy instituted the Palliative Care Committee and the Behavioral Commit-tee at nursing homes to ensure his patients get the best palliative care, behavioral management and overall quality of care.

Joe Rotella, M.D.HosparusDr. Joe Rotella joined Hospa-rus in 1999 and has since dedi-cated his time to educating other physicians about end-of-life care via Education in Palliative and End-of-Life Care

(The EPEC Project™). Dr. Rotella also has pro-vided education to faculty and students regard-ing hospice and palliative care at the University of Louisville School of Medicine. In addition, he has worked with area clinicians to help start pal-liative care programs at Louisville area hospitals.

Kupper Wintergerst, M.D.Pediatric Endocrinology & Diabetes, University of LouisvilleDr. Kupper Wintergerst’s pri-mary research focus is on type

1 and type 2 diabetes in children. Dr. Winterg-erst has worked diligently to advance hospital diabetes programs by developing sophisticated protocols to more safely manage diabetes. He has developed and participated in a wide vari-ety of projects that focus on improving access and quality of care and is the lead investigator on a seven state newborn screening program initiative for thyroid disease.

Diane Hague, Vice PresidentAddiction Services, Seven Counties Services, Inc.Diane Hague developed some of the first women’s ad-

diction programs in Kentucky, including the first women’s intensive outpatient program, the first program in a women’s prison and the first ad-diction program for pregnant women. Hague developed “Project Link” with the intent to link pregnant women to addiction treatment and decrease the number of addicted new-borns. Last year, 90 percent of Project Link ba-bies were born alcohol/drug-free.

Beth Monarch, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating OfficerCardinal Hill Healthcare SystemBeth Monarch ascribes to the

leadership model of “Lead by Example.” She assures opportunities for professionals at Car-dinal Hill Healthcare System through a variety of internships and field study roles. Monarch cre-ated the Lean Team Project, which broke down the barriers for client admissions. As a result, Cardinal Hill was able to increase the referral to admission conversion rate and more clients who need inpatient rehabilitation are served.

Susan Stout Tamme, Louisville Market PresidentBaptist Healthcare, Inc.Sue Stout Tamme helped cre-ate a network of nearly three-dozen Baptist Healthcare lo-

cations in four counties and the 144-bed Park Tower. The most recent facility is Baptist East-point, an outpatient center for radiation thera-py, radiology, physical therapy, cardiovascular testing and outpatient surgery, plus physician offices and a Baptist Urgent Care. Tamme’s in-terest in wellness sparked the Baptist East/Mile-stone Wellness Center partnership, which has been named a Best of Louisville winning facility.

Signature HealthCARE, which relocated from Florida to Louisville last year, operates 72 skilled-nursing communities and has launched several spinoff companies to serve the aging popula-tion. Signature HealthCARE’s philosophy rests on three organizational pillars: learning, spirituality and intra-preneurship. Signature HealthCARE’s mission is to change the landscape of long term care forever. To meet the unique needs of their clientele, Signature HealthCARE has developed new products and services, providing unique quality of life and spirituality programs, and pro-viding internal and external education opportu-nities for its employees. Signature HealthCare is bold in its pursuit of new approaches to aging care in collaboration with the Louisville health-care community.

ApoVax, Inc.ApoVax, Inc. is a local biotechnology company developing novel therapies and vaccines for cancer, infectious diseases, and Type 1 Dia-betes. ApoVax, Inc. has developed a vaccine-based therapy used to treat cancer and infec-tious diseases and also a therapy to prevent organ or tissue rejection in transplant settings. Each of these technologies could significantly improve patient outcomes and decrease health-care costs.

Jane Hermes, PresidentTurbo Wheelchair Company, Inc.Dr. Jane Hermes, President of Turbo Wheelchair Company, Inc., fulfilled the needs of the

mobility limited and their caregivers by design-ing a stylish, durable, lightweight wheelchair product that provides good value. Dr. Hermes outlined the characteristics of the first all syn-thetic-resin lightweight manual wheelchair and developed the Merlexi CraftTM series of colorful, plastic wheelchairs.

University of Louisville’s Office of Technology Transfer (OTT) The University of Louisville’s Office of Technol-ogy Transfer disseminates the knowledge de-veloped by faculty, staff, other employees and students by employing cutting-edge, flexible, collaborative practices. The OTT has transferred technologies from the University to the business sector that have the potential to increase health-care accessibility and decrease healthcare costs, including disease management programs and cancer diagnostics and therapeutics. More than 30 start-up companies have been created as a result of the efforts of the OTT.

MedPro Safety Products, Inc. MedPro Safety Products, Inc has developed and acquired a portfolio of patented medical de-vice safety products incorporating proprietary needlestick prevention functionalities.MedPro’s core focus is to reduce the risk of sharps injury by developing new “passive” technologies that raise the level of safety for the healthcare pro-fessional while minimizing the need for addi-tional training. Preventing needlestick injury re-duces healthcare costs by eliminating the need to test for and/or treat accidental exposure to bloodborne diseases.

Appriss & Baptist Health Network for Appriss clinicBaptist Health Network for Appriss Clinic creat-ed an on-site primary care clinic and corporate wellness program for its employees and their families at significant cost savings. The collabo-ration resulted in a decrease of long-term health issues and lower costs for the employees and their families. Appriss also developed VINE®, the nation’s leading automated victim notifica-tion solution. VINE makes it easy for victims and other citizens to obtain timely information about criminal cases and the custody status of offend-ers held in local jails or state prisons.

Elizabeth Doyle, M.D., PhysicianNorton Physician Services, Norton Healthcare Dr. Elizabeth Doyle formed a group called BEST (Breast-

feeding Education and Support Team) at Nor-ton Suburban Hospital due to the low rates of breastfeeding mothers in Kentucky. The BEST team has helped implement mother-baby cou-plet care, decreased the use of pacifiers and supplementation of formula in the nursery, in-creased staff breastfeeding education and de-veloped the first written breastfeeding policy at the hospital. Dr. Doyle also works with the residents and students with the University of Louisville’s Department of Pediatrics to improve breastfeeding education.

Kentucky Voices for HealthKentucky Voices for Health (KVH) is a broad co-alition of more than 100 organizations working to improve Kentuckians’ health and healthcare coverage. KVH works to ensure that all Ken-tuckians have access to high quality, affordable healthcare. KVH advocated for a tobacco tax increase and advocated to remove barriers to the enrollment of children eligible for KCHIP or Medicaid, but not yet enrolled. KVH also suc-cessfully urged Governor Steve Beshear to fund the Medicaid smoking cessation program as part of the biennial budget.

The Seven Counties Services Healthcare Advocacy Awardpresented to an individual or organization that is the effective advocate at the local, state or national level concerning issues such as, but not limited to, access to care initiatives that support healthy lifestyles.

Baptist Crestwood The Baptist Crestwood facility, designed by Luckett & Farley, is Baptist Hospital Northeast’s first outpatient facility, offering diagnostic imaging and physical therapy services, as well as physician office space. The facility utilizes multiple “green” construction features and has been designed to not only meet the current needs of the residents but to meet their future needs during expansion and renovations.

The Cardiovascular Innovation InstituteThe Cardiovascular In-novation Institute (CII) , designed by Arrasmith, Judd, Rapp, Chovan Ar-chitects, is a facility that supports the discov-ery, development and

implementation of innovative treatments for car-diovascular disease. The CII takes research find-ings from the biomedical and bioengineering labs straight to the bedside, helping patients lead better lives. The facility houses a preclinical R&D, bio-imaging capabilities and supports FDA Good Laboratory Practice studies, essential for the approval of devices and therapies.

The new UK Albert B. Chandler HospitalThe new UK Albert B. Chandler Hospital, de-signed by GBBN Architects and Ellerbe & Becket, incorporates elements of nature and art representative of Kentucky and its people. The new hospital is designed around the needs of the patient and the family and also to support the nurse in providing bedside care. All patient rooms are private and equipped to serve indi-viduals with disabilities. Each patient floor has a platform of care designed to mitigate patient movement as much as possible. A central focus is to enable all care providers to improve their efficiency and standardization of care delivery.

Virginia Bradford, CoordinatorKentucky African Americans Against Cancer (KAAAC)/ Kentucky Cancer Program

Virginia Bradford works to educate the African American community on various aspects of health including but not limited to cancer. Brad-ford helped start the Kentucky African Ameri-cans Against Cancer (KAAAC), a volunteer community based organization. KAAAC works to reduce cancer health disparities in the African American population through education, out-reach, patient support and advocacy and has worked to increase availability and/or access to healthcare services in our community through educational presentations.

HosparusHosparus provides care, comfort and coun-seling for people facing life-limiting illnesses in Kentucky and Southern Indiana. Hosparus healthcare professionals and volunteers provide pain control, control of symptoms, medication management, personal care and spiritual care. All services are delivered wherever a patient calls home. Hospice care relieves suffering when a cure for an illness is not expected. It involves treatments that enhance a patient’s comfort and quality of life.

Gordon Tobin, M.D.Division of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, University Surgical AssociatesDr. Gordon Tobin works to ad-

dress healthcare access, health disparities and drug abuse in underserved communities. Dr. Tobin established and chaired the Committee to Cover the Uninsured, and organized 250 Lou-isville physicians for charity care through get-Care , a comprehensive program for Louisville’s uninsured. Dr. Tobin also leads many missions to third-world countries for burn and birth defect reconstruction and co-founded the Louisville-Vietnam Burn Care Project.

The Governor’s Dignity of Humanity Awardpresented to an individual or organization that through its mission and its actions has improved availability and/or access to healthcare services for our region’s underserved or vulnerable populations.

Brain Injury University Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation HospitalThe Brain Injury University, an educational series specifically designed by healthcare profession-als, assists brain injury survivors and their fami-lies return to school and increase their network of peer friends. The Brain Injury University helps the survivor to understand deficits, increase knowledge of a brain injury, learn compensatory strategies to increase independence, keep up-to-date with current research and technology and ask questions about their injury.

James Graham Brown Cancer Center Mobile Mammography Unit

The James Graham Brown Cancer Center Mo-bile Mammography Unit provides mammogram screenings to women in Kentucky and South-ern Indiana in order to reduce the incidence of breast cancer. The Mobile Mammography Unit, which saves lives through early detection, provides quality-imaging services to women in a convenient setting at an affordable rate. The program works to decrease disparities in mammography screening among underserved women with low income or less education and provides free mammograms to financially quali-fied individuals.

Cancer and Restorative Exercise (CARE) Program Baptist East/Milestone Wellness Center

The Cancer and Restorative Exercise program (CARE) was developed in response to evidence from national studies indicating exercise therapy to be a vital component of cancer recovery. The CARE program at the Baptist East/Milestone Wellness Center provides stamina-boosting ex-ercise to build strength, confidence and overall fitness by using a personal trainer with expertise in working with people affected by cancer in an individualized 10-week program. Workouts are in a small group setting for camaraderie and en-couragement among participants.

The Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFAC) at Norton HealthcareThe Patient and Family Advisory Councils (PFAC) provides patient- and family-centered healthcare by promoting an environment of car-ing and well-being for patients and families and encourages them to be equal partners with their healthcare team. The PFAC ensures that hospi-tal management keeps the patient and family in consideration when making decisions. The councils enable family members to take an ac-tive role in the development of programs and processes that directly impact patients at Nor-ton Healthcare facilities.

The Consumer First Awardpresented to an individual or organization that has demonstrated the most “consumer friendly” program or facility.



Charles “Chipper” Henry Griffith, III, M.D., MSPH, Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics University of Kentucky College of Medicine

Dr. Charles Henry Griffith, III developed a 16-week internal medicine-emergency medicine third year clerkship. This unique clerkship com-bines the ambulatory internal medicine, hospi-tal internal medicine and emergency medicine clerkships into one course. This allows students opportunities for continuity of patient care ex-periencing the continuum of adult patient illness across many spectrums and through time. This course provides instruction on contemporary health issues, such as patient safety, hospice and end-of-life care.

Norton Healthcare’s Diversity and Inclusion DepartmentNorton Healthcare’s Diversity and Inclusion Department works to improve the health of the community by maintaining an inclusive environ-ment in which employees understand, respect and reflect the diversity of the people served. The strategy was integrated into the company’s existing strategic plan with goals and measure-ments. A four-hour instructor-led beginning diversity-training course was developed and it was mandated that all employees of Norton Healthcare be required to attend the class.

UofL GeriatricsUofL Geriatrics provides care for older adults by using an interdisciplinary team approach to care for the medical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of older adults. UofL Geriatrics ensures that all medical students at the Univer-sity of Louisville School of Medicine interview an older adult to assess their functional status as well as their mental status. Medical students also rotate through UofL clinical sites learn-ing how to care for the unique needs of older adults. UofL Geriatrics sponsors an annual Ge-riatrics Healthcare Symposium, which educates others on geriatric medicine principles.
