Dear Friends,“Keep moving forward” is a phrase I use quite often. It’s something I continually tell our team here and everyone else in the fight against Alzheimer’s. Because when it comes to this terrible disease, the status quo is unacceptable.
AFA kept moving forward and continued to grow in 2018, with a number of accomplishments of which we are very proud. Among them:
• Expanding our National Toll-Free Helpline, staffed by licensed social workers trained in dementia care, to seven days a week, delivering 3,500 hours of personal, compassionate, quality counseling to more than 5,500 people.
• Providing free confidential memory screenings to more than 1 million people, bringing the total number of individuals served to more than 5 million since the program’s inception.
• Bringing our Educating America Tour throughout the nation and connecting thousands of people to resources, knowledge and support services.
• Launching a new AFA Lecture Series, “Alzheimer’s Disease from A to Z,” to teach people the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, how to communicate memory concerns, and prepare a road map for care.
• Celebrating the one-year anniversary of AFA’s Education & Resource Center, the hub of our expanding services.
• Training hundreds of first responders to meet the unique needs of police departments and sheriff’s offices nationwide.
• Awarding over $1 million in grants for care, innovation and research, including to more than 85 member organizations across the country to support programs like art and music therapy, wandering prevention and respite care, along with research projects to help treat Alzheimer’s disease and college scholarships for the next generation of leaders in the fight against this disease.
• Increasing awareness through our Light the World in Teal program with more than 300 landmarks, the largest participation ever.
• Publishing an editorial in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease from the AFA Medical, Scientific, and Memory Screening Advisory Board to provide counsel about direct-to-consumer genetic testing kits.
• Making our website bilingual to help meet the rising needs of Spanish-speaking families affected by Alzheimer’s.
• Again, earning Charity Navigator’s highest rating of four stars in recognition of our commitment to accountability, transparency and financial responsibility.
Nothing epitomized the “keep moving forward” motto better than our first-ever Alzheimer’s Walk this past October at the AFA Respite Care Relief Park in the Town of Babylon, New York. Despite a steady stream of cold rain, nothing dampened the spirits of the hundreds of good folks who came out to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer’s.
The accomplishments of 2018 were significant, but with the number of people affected by Alzheimer’s disease expected to nearly triple by 2060, we must continue to do more.
We are grateful for your past support which helped make all of this possible. With your continued generosity, we will build on our shared successes and keep moving forward, enriching lives and creating hope.
Sincerely,
Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr. President & Chief Executive Officer Alzheimer’s Foundation of America

HelplineThe first AFA touchpoint of care is our National Toll-Free Helpline, staffed by compassionate, licensed social workers, specially trained in Alzheimer’s and dementia counseling. In 2018, we expanded to 7 days a week, helped more than 5,500 people and provided more than 3,500 hours of counseling.

“ It’s wonderful to have a place to call for help especially when you can’t talk openly to friends and family.”
National Memory Screening ProgramOver 5 million people in 14 years have been served by our simple, safe, free and confidential evaluation at thousands of screening events, community health fairs, memory-screening Mondays in November, and retail partnerships, such as Kmart Pharmacy.
In 2018, more than 1 million people received a memory screening.
“ I was so scared because some people in my family have Alzheimer’s. I’m so glad I came.”
CARE, COUNSELING, RESOURCES
Educating America TourSince its launch in 2017, AFA’s Educating America Tour has brought awareness, resources, knowledge, and caregiving support free of charge to 15,000 participants and 28 states across the country. In 2018, we landed in 13 states: California, Arizona, Massachusetts, Tennessee, South Carolina, Alabama, New York, Wisconsin, Virginia, Louisiana, Texas, Ohio, and Georgia.
“Hearing real life stories are always helpful in letting you know that you’re not alone.”
Educating America Tour helped 15,000 people in 28 states through 2018.
AFA ON THE ROAD
“ The workshop was excellent and very comprehensive in terms of focusing on management of Alzheimer’s disease, sensitivity toward patients and family caregivers.”
AFA Lecture SeriesAFA’s newest free educational series, “Alzheimer’s disease from A to Z,” launched in fall 2018 in three markets: Long Island, Westchester and Rhode Island. Open to the public, participants learn the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, how to communicate concerns about memory as well as planning for care as you age. Attending social workers can receive two continuing education contact hours for free as well.

To help them meet the unique needs of these individuals, AFA continued to provide specialized dementia training to public safety agencies in 2018, including the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Department, which safeguards some of the nation’s largest transportation facilities. Together with Project Lifesaver International, AFA held its first-ever educational and training conference specifically for first responders in Fairfax, VA, teaching them about the signs of dementia and ways to effectively communicate with someone who has a cognitive impairment. More than 100 officers from six different states participated.

Respite programs are increasingly important to improve the quality of life for individuals living with Alzheimer’s disease and their family caregivers. We are proud to support these outstanding organizations in their efforts to provide support in their communities.”

INVESTING IN THE FUTUREAwarding College ScholarshipsIn 2018, AFA awarded $30,000 in college scholarship funding to 30 students across the country whose lives have been personally impacted by Alzheimer’s disease. Many have a loved one with the disease, worked as caregivers, volunteered and have developed a passion for the cause. More than 2,400 student applications were received for the 2018 Teens for Alzheimer’s Awareness Scholarship Essay Contest.
More than $200,000 to Stony Brook MedicineTo support an Positron Emission Tomography (PET) imaging research project that will compare neurons from healthy controls to those affected by Alzheimer’s disease. This type of innovative, translational research study has the potential to lead to the development of effective medications that specifically target the damaged areas of the brain.
" Through this collaboration with the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, Stony Brook will bring new insights into the origins of Alzheimer’s, which will translate into advanced diagnostics, treatments and prognoses for our patients.”
—Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, SVP, Health Sciences and Dean of Stony Brook University School of Medicine
FUNDING INNOVATIVE RESEARCH$100,000 to The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research Litwin-Zucker Center for the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders To explore new treatments for Alzheimer’s most troubling symptoms: hallucinations, agitation, and aggression. This funding award is the third phase of a five-year $500,000 commitment.
“ AFA recognized the urgent need for research in this very difficult area, and provided support when few others were willing to do so. Dr. Jeremy Koppel and I, along with our team, have made real progress in this area over the last two years, and are excited to continue this research.” —Peter Davies, PhD, Director of the Litwin-Zucker Center for
the Study of Alzheimer’s Disease and Memory Disorders at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research
“ The impact that Alzheimer’s disease had on my life through my great grandmother’s journey is something that can never be replaced or recreated. It taught me to love unconditionally, to honor family bonds, and to do what is necessary even through scary situations. It means the absolute world to me that I was able to care for her and make her smile while she was alive.”
—Brooke SerraSecond Runner-Up
“ I am truly grateful that I had the chance to care for [my grandfather], show him how much I love him and maintain his dignity.”
—Laurence CrandonGrand Prize Winner
“ I’ve never experienced anything even close to the love and utter devotion that my grandpa has for my grandma. That’s love at a whole other stage in life.”
—Dani Moore First Runner-Up

Historic $2.34 Billion in Federal Funding for Alzheimer’s ResearchThe fiscal year 2019 federal budget delivered $2.34 billion for Alzheimer’s research funding. This was the first time federal investment surpassed $2 billion a year, the minimum amount leading scientists say is needed to meet the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease goal of finding a cure and/or better treatment by 2025.
BOLD New Action to Fight Alzheimer’s DiseaseThe Building Our Largest Dementia Infrastructure for Alzheimer’s (BOLD) law makes dementia a public health issue by establishing Centers of Excellence in Public Health Practice dedicated to promoting Alzheimer’s disease management and caregiving interventions as well as educating the public about Alzheimer’s disease and brain health.
“ The National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease calls for a cure or disease modifying treatment by 2025. This funding gets us on a viable path toward putting this goal within the realm of possible. Maintaining the status quo when it comes to Alzheimer’s is not an option.”
—Charles J. Fuschillo, Jr., AFA President & CEO
RAISE Family Caregiver ActRecognize, Assist, Include, Support and Engage (RAISE) Family Caregivers Act will provide a desperately needed comprehensive national plan for the millions of family caregivers across the country who tirelessly care for their loved ones—including those living with Alzheimer’s—often while also trying to balance a family and a career, and deal with health issues of their own. The RAISE Act requires the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) to develop, maintain and update an integrated national strategy to support family caregivers.
Kevin and Avonte’s Law PassedThe Missing Americans Alert Program Act of 2018 (also known as “Kevin and Avonte’s Law”) was established to provide grants for training and technologies that help first responders locate individuals with Alzheimer’s disease or autism who wander and go missing. The
program is authorized at $2 million annually (or $10 million) from FY 2018 through 2022.
Genetic TestingThe increasing popularity of direct-to-consumer genetic testing kits, particularly at holiday gift-giving season, prompted AFA’s Medical, Scientific, and Memory Screening Advisory Board to publish an editorial in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease to advise consumers about their proper usage. “Three Wishes Now That the Genie is Out of the Bottle” provided recommendations to consumers, physician-scientists, policy makers and the commercial genetic testing industry on strengthening consumer safeguards and making it easier for people to access information so that they can make a more informed decision about whether genetic testing is right for them.
“ Consumers should have the right information before deciding to take a genetic test.”
