JEWISH FOODWEEK

Dear Members,Happy New Year! As a new year rolls in, many of us resolve to live healthier, eat better and to be more kind and generous. But, resolutions have notoriously short shelf lives. Find success by working with us in 2018 to improve your heart health, increase your mindfulness, support healthier families and parents, and increase healthy eating. We are gearing up for our annual fundraiser, Big Night Out on Saturday, January 20. This year’s theme, J-Mitzvah - Party Like it’s Your Bar Mitzvah, is really resonating with our members and is sure to be a lot of fun. Hope to see you there! Our fi tness center now offers more “movement and mindfulness” classes in T’ai Chi, Pilates and yoga. And, we are introducing Cancer Exercise Specialized Training, with trainers who work with cancer patients and their doctors during and after cancer surgery and treatment and into survivorship to improve a patient’s ability to cope. Top it off with a host of heart health activities planned for February and March and you sure to beat those winter blahs.2018 also brings a renewed focus on family activity at the JCC. We are re-introducing Kids Night Out, a monthly Saturday night outing for children 5-14 (no adults allowed!) and starting up Sunday-Funday!, a monthly action-packed day for the whole family. Registration for our summer camps, Camp Davis (for children 5-15) and Camp K’Toni (for children 2-4) open shortly and we expect hundreds of happy kids to play and get dirty on our 54 acre campus this summer. Our preschool also added a new infant room to respond to growing demand from our community for high quality, Jewish childcare.

In February, we welcome Ali Katz to talk about mindfulness and parenting, as well as Gary Belsky, former editor of ESPN magazine, who will talk to Rudy Kalis about skills, tips and strategies to achieve total sports mastery! Art on the West Side has fi nalized its artist selections and we expect an amazing, and overfl owing group of artists to the Auditorium on Apri1 21-22, 2018. We’ve added a Jazz Brunch for Sunday morning, which should be fun! In March, between Purim and Passover, we plan to host a week-long food festival, Jewish Food Week, the highlight of which includes a talk and cooking demonstration from the doyenne of Jewish cooking, Joan Nathan on March 9. Stay tuned for more details. All the details for our programs, classes and events can be found on our updated website www.nashvillejcc.org and on our Facebook page.As we enter 2018, we are reminded, that for Jews, the number eighteen is associated with chai, which signifi es life and being alive! FITNESS “DID YOU KNOW”…

Emphasis on ROWING!Did you know rowing burns 10 to 15% more calories than cycling does at the same exertion level because this total body workout involves more muscles? And, because rowing is a low-impact exercise, it is often a better option than a treadmill or even elliptical machine for those with joint issues. The rowing machine, also called an ergometer, has been around almost 2500 years. There is evidence from Classical Greek civilization that Athenian admirals trained their troops on wooden rowing machines prior to joining a crew on sea! The fi rst indoor rower in the US was patented in 1871 by an athlete named William B. Curtis, who went on to co-found what is now known as the US Rowing Association.Rowing Machines are seeing a resurgence in interest and use. Our staff are happy to provide instruction in proper use or see our printed instructions if you prefer to ‘do-it-yourself’. Come row with us!

*Jewish holidays begin at sundown the night before

Tu b’Shevat: January 31Tu b’Shevat is known also as the New Year of the Trees. In contemporary Israel, the day is often called Arbor Day and celebrated as an ecological awareness day, and trees are planted in celebration. The holiday is often celebrated with a seder in which foods from the Seven Species described in the Bible are served. These include wheat, barley, grapes, fi gs, pomegranates, olives, and dates.

Purim: March 1Celebrates the rescue of the Jews from extermination at the hands of Haman, the chief minister to the king of Persia (King Ahasuerus). Haman’s plans were foiled by Mordecai and his cousin Esther, who had risen to become Queen of Persia. This day of deliverance became a day of fasting and celebration.Purim falls on March 24 and is celebrated with the reading of the Megillah, children dressing up in costumes such as Haman and Queen Esther, eating hamantashen (cookies in the shape of Haman’s hat, and the giving of gifts (mishloach manot) to friends and relatives.

Passover: April 1-71st Seder: March 312nd Seder: April 1Passover, (or Pesach in Hebrew) marks the liberation of the Israelites from 400 years of slavery in ancient Egypt. They were led to freedom by Moses and the many miracles God performed to force the Pharoah to release the Israelites. God infl icted the Egyptians with 10 plagues, the 10th being the worst. The Jews were instructed to mark their doorposts with the blood of a slaughtered lamb so that God would know to pass over those homes in the carrying out of the 10th plague. God’s exodus miracles culminate with the splitting of the Red Sea. Passover is also known as the Holiday of Matzot, Holiday of Freedom, and Holiday of Spring. Passover begins with a Seder dinner based around a Passover prayer book called the Haggadah which recounts the redemption of the people from slavery. When the Israelites left Egypt, they left in such haste that their fl our did not have time to leaven. Because of this, Jews today abstain from all leavened wheat products during the eight day holiday and eat the traditional matzah (unleavened bread) which means happy holiday.

Shavuot: May 20-May 21Shavuot, which occurs 50 days after Passover, commemorates the anniversary of the day God gave

the Torah to the entire nation of Israel at Mount Sinai and when the fi rst fruits were harvested and brought to the Temple. The Ten Commandments are read from the Torah during the Shavuot service. Traditionally, dairy foods are eaten.

Watch for details on upcoming holidays and

celebrate with us!
