page 2 Welcome to the Nursing & Midwifery News: 2018 South Australian Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards special edition. The 2018 Excellence Awards Gala dinner was held on Friday, 11 May at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre with over 400 guests in attendance. At this event nurses and midwives were recognised for their excellence in practice and acknowledged for the significant contribution that they make to their professions, their teams and the community through their practice. In addition to the announcement of the finalists and recipient of the Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards the two 2018/2019 South Australian Premiers Scholarships recipients were also awarded. These scholarships will enable the recipients to undertake an overseas study tour to explore an area of nursing or midwifery practice to the value of $12,000. It was a truly wonderful night enjoyed by nurses and midwives, families and friends, colleagues and sponsors. We were very fortunate to have the new Minister for Health and Wellbeing, the Hon. Stephen Wade MLC; the new Chief Executive Officer for SA Health, Dr Chris McGowan; the new Chief Nurse & Midwifery Officer, Jennifer Hurley; the Chief Executive Officer, Congress of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Nurses & Midwives, Mrs Janine Mohamed and First Commonwealth Chief Nurse & Midwifery Officer, Dr Rosemary Bryant in attendance for this special evening. This year, the theme for International Day of the Midwife was Midwives, leading the way with quality care. This theme signifies the vital role that midwives play in ensuring women and babies safely navigate pregnancy and birth, and that these interactions can lay the foundations for a continued health and wellbeing beyond childbirth. The focus for 2018’s International Nurses Day was: Nurses a Voice to Lead – Health is a Human Right. The International Council of Nurses (ICN) believes that health is a human right. ICN is at the forefront of advocating for access to health and nurses are the key to delivering it. All over the world, there are individuals and communities who are suffering from illness due to a lack of accessible and affordable health care. But we must also remember that the right to health applies to nurses as well! We know that improved quality and safety for patients depends on positive working environments for staff. That means the right to a safe working environment, adequate remuneration, and access to resources, and education. We must add to this the right to be heard and have a voice in decision making and policy development! With this year’s International Nurses Day theme in mind, new awards were introduced and presented on the night – the first ever South Australian nursing and midwifery Humanitarian Awards. The Humanitarian Awards acknowledge individuals who have gone above and beyond the call of duty to provide outstanding care to their patients. These unsung heroes of the nursing and midwifery professions were nominated by their peers as someone who has truly made a difference in the lives of those in their communities and beyond. SPECIAL EDITION 2018 Nursing and Midwifery EXCELLENCE AWARDS The Awards were held during the week of celebration for International Day of the Midwife and International Nurses Day, 5–12 May 2018.
