2018
NOVEMBER
NEWSLETTER
Hi Maldemerians Unfortunately, I wasn’t present at our final competition for 2018 but observed all the Facebook postings and the resting place ceremony for Wayne Gatley live on the beach cam. Our president Allan Brown again excelled in his organisation skills, the day was a huge success and we all look forward to Al putting up his hand for the job in 2019. In my absence Greg Mills and Lisa Manton were kind enough to put together an overall report on the day for your enjoyment. Photos again are excellent, thanks to Geoff Carter and Allan Brown.
From the Contest Directors Desk by Millsy
On Sunday at our November Comp, we all saw our friend
and fellow club member Wayne Gatley farewelled with his
ashes scattered at his beloved Bonny’s point, watched on by
Cassie, family members and friends. A huge attendance was
testimony to Wayne’s popularity. John O’Rafferty said some
lovely words at the ceremony and everyone agreed – what a
great place for Wayne to be – He will always be with us.
There were 7 heats for our last comp of the year, 40 surfers in all, and even though the swell was
small, the conditions were clean, and it was very competitive.
Connie and Col beat the record in the Barbeque tent, and that’s without GT being in attendance. Well
done, you guys work so hard and we really appreciate it.
Big thank you to Mick and Megan for your assistance, couldn’t do it without you both. Next get
together will be our presentation day at Bonny’s park on Saturday December 8 at 1.00pm.
Meat and some beverages will be provided by the club, and if you could bring a small plate- i.e.
Salad, cheese plate etc. that would be great.
It’s been a great year, I would just like to say thank you to you all, love this club see you all at the
Presso. Millsy

Rosco and the Band would like to thank the Mal De Mer
members for their attendance on last Friday night for their GIG,
at the Tavern.
We shall start our action photos with the
biggest smile, Dereck Lotter, one of my favorite
photos. It was Halloween last week and the
photo below cracked me up. Women’s
membership continues to grow for the better,
our girls have a great sense of humour. I won’t
mention the owner of the vehicle for legal
reasons.
George Watt five over the nose, I can hear Ken Williams saying “that’s real longboard riding” well done George winning A grade final and thank you for a brilliant year.
winner of B grade. Jim Gray joined our club late in the year therefore missed out on many comps, my prediction for overall 2019 B grade. winner.
Right Sarah Swift must have had an early night and must have stayed away from any liquids offered by Robyn Wilson to perform at her best to win the Women’s division with style. Well done Sarah.
Tom Spilsbury surfing well, like many juniors I have witnessed over the years. It’s incredible watching them develop into great surfers and fine adults. Well done Tom winner of the juniors’ division.
Right, no that’s not Darren Gill but Michael Buckley. Darren’s wipe out must have been good to beat Michaels. We didn’t capture Darren Gill’s winning wipe out photo but found this great shot. Darren scored a 2nd in round two, heat one.
Round two, heat four Shane Gatley scoring a first in his heat. We look forward to seeing you next year Shane and your beautiful mother cheering you on or maybe surfing
Good to see you competing Brett Purcell, winning round two heat five, not going to say anything about what assumes to be a drop in but knowing John Newman he would have flicked off the wave allowing Brett the right of way.
Allan Brown the Style that won him a first in round one, heat two and a second in the final, looking good Al. Winning round two, heat two Robert Mudgee, very similar style to Al
Below Michael Fowler winning round one, heat four and third in the final. Michael are you sure you want to sell your logger? Comes in handy in a small swell.
Winning round two heat three Chad Gillbanks. I think I have a man crush, girls you must admit that’s a nice fitting wetsuit.
Bye for now, see you at the Christmas party/presentation.
