The Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame was founded in 1991 to recognize and preserve the heritage of high school athlet-ics in Florida, to keep alive their tradition and spirit, and to honor each year those persons who through distinguished achievement have excelled in one or more high school athletic programs sponsored by the Association and its member schools.
Hall of Fame nominees shall include individuals who have raised the level of awareness in high school athletics through their distinguished achievement and excellence in one or more high school athletic programs sponsored by the Association; or through their contributions to high school athletics in other fields of work. These individuals may include student-athletes, coaches, ad-ministrators, contest officials, media personnel, sports medicine personnel, athletic trainers, or distinguished volunteers. Nominees may be retired from their field, or still active. Nominees must exemplify the highest standards of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and moral character.
The categories of student-athlete, coach, administrator, contest official and contributor are included on the nomination form for expediency in understanding the primary area in which an individual is to be considered for his or her achievements in high school athletics. These groupings are for screening purposes only and to assist those in making the nominations in understanding the type of information required. Once nominees are inducted, they are not categorized, but all are recognized as members of the FHSAA Hall of Fame. To further explain:
• A student-athlete is a former student participant who is being nominated for his or her achievements in high school athletics. To be eligible for nomination, a student-athlete must have graduated from a Florida high school 10 or more years ago. Student-athletes will be considered primarily on their achievements as a high school student-athlete. Limited consideration will be given to their achievements on the college or professional levels. Character during and after their high school years, however, will be a major consideration.
• A coach will be considered primarily for his or her achievements in senior high school coaching only. Secondary consideration will be given to the nominee’s achievements as a collegiate or professional coach. The nominee’s character both in high school and other levels also will receive primary consideration. To be eligible for nomination as a coach, the individual must have served as a high school coach for a minimum of 20 years.
• An administrator will be considered primarily on the merits of his or her service as a high school athletic administrator, county athletic administrator and/or state athletic administrator. The nominee’s character also will receive consideration. To be eligible for nomination as an administrator, the individual must have served as a high school administrator for a minimum of 20 years or as a high school administrator and coach for a minimum of 20 years, of which at least 10 years must have been as an administrator.
• A contest official will be considered primarily on the merits of his/her service as a high school athletic official. The nominee’s character also will receive consideration. To be eligible for nomination as a contest official, the individual must have served as a high school contest official for a minimum of 20 years.
• A contributor is an individual who has made contributions to high school athletics in some capacity other than those previously mentioned, including such areas as sports media and sports medicine. A nominee will be considered primarily on the merits of his or her contributions to high school athletics. The nominee’s character also will receive consideration.
All nominees will be judged on their significant and/or long-term contributions to high school athletics. While many have served their schools or areas over a long and distinguished career, their accomplishments must have been worthy of statewide recognition for them to be considered. Longevity, without meaningful statewide impact, does not constitute appropriate credentials for Hall of Fame consideration. The Hall of Fame Screening Committee may consider a nominee's total record of contribution to high school athletics in determining eligibility for candidacy and not just his/her record of service in the category in which the nomination is made. The Screening Committee also may waive the minimum years of service requirement when exceptional circumstances such as injury, illness or death have prevented an otherwise worthy candidate from meeting the requirement.
To date, 193 deserving individuals have been enshrined in the Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame.
Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame
Statement of Purpose& Criteria for Nominations
A nomination to the Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame must be emailed to [email protected] no later than FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2018 to be considered for the Class of 2018.
NOTE: NOmINATIONS SENT vIA mAIl OR FAx wIll NOT BE ACCEPTED. NOmINATIONS THAT ARE HAND-DElIvERED wIll NOT BE ACCEPTED. ONlY NOmINATIONS SENT vIA EmAIl wIll BE CONSIDERED.
The nomination form must include the following:
1) The nomination form itself, completed in its entirety and submitted digitally. It is preferable that the nomination form be typewritten. You are also permitted to print out the nomination form, fill it out by hand, scan it and submit it via email.
2) Three (3) letters of recommendation. No more. No less. Pick your best three. These letters of recommendation should be limited to one typewritten page each.
3) Scanned .PDFs of not more than 10 of the following: newspaper clippings, magazine articles, event programs, scorebook pages, statistical printouts or other such materials that substantiate the nominee’s accomplishments and contributions. These materials should focus on high school accomplishments and contributions and should be arranged in chronological order. The .PDF format simplifies the copying process for preparation of nomination packets that are sent to members of the Hall of Fame screening and selection committees. Do not use highlighters to point out specific facts (their marks do not photocopy well); either underline or draw arrows to mark copy. In cases where such substantiating materials are difficult to obtain, additional letters of recommendation may be submitted. Nominations that include scanned .JPG images of such items and not .PDFs will NOT be considered.
4) A current head-and-shoulders high-resolution .JPG photograph (300 DPI) of the nominee. Nominee pictures must be photograph-hed in business attire. Business attire for men includes suits, sports jackets or polo shirts. For women, business attire includes sports jackets, dresses or polo shirts. Nomination forms that include low-resolution pictures or casual/cropped headshots will NOT be considered.
5) Video highlights and/or testimonials regarding career, with emphasis on high school accomplishments. These can be provided either through a URL (e.g. YouTube) or uploaded to www.fhsaa.org/upload.
NOTE: Nominating one's self is NOT permissible.
All information submitted will be retained by the Florida High School Athletic Association.
Nominations for the Hall of Fame will be reviewed by a Screening Committee and one of the following three things will happen:1. Approved and sent to the Selection Committee.2. Put on hold for future consideration. Being put on hold means a nominee may be considered again for induction and that ad-
ditional information and supportive material would be helpful before future consideration. The nomination will be considered for no more than three consecutive years and can be placed in the inacative category at any point after year one.
3. Placed in the inactive category. This indicates that the nominee will no longer be considered for Hall of Fame induction until renominated. A one-year waiting period is required before renomination.
All nominees mUST be available to attend the The 28th Annual Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet, which will be held Sept. 23, 2018, in Gainesville, Fla., at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center (1714 SW 34th St.). Individuals selected for induction as a member of the Class of 2018, as well as the individuals nominating them, will be notified via email of their induction no later than May 15, 2018. They may be asked to provide additional biographi-cal information at that time.
Inductees will be required to submit 20 high-resolution photographs from their career as well as a song best describing their life in the summer of 2018.
For more information on the nomination and selection process, or for answers to questions arising from these instructions, please call the FHSAA communications department at (352) 372-9551 ext. 350.
