The Swim Carnival was such a success and will be remembered by all as a day filled with excitement and perseverance. It was fantastic to see students of all ages getting into the pool and supporting their teammates. Proston’s sense of spirit was heard across the school with the war cries ringing out throughout the day. Last weekend I also had the privilege of attending my first Proston Show. I thoroughly enjoyed seeing students participate in many of the competitions and was proud to see the students supporting their local community by attending the show. It was wonderful to see the Show Team work the arena with confidence and their hard work was recognised by the community through the many awards they received. I would like to extend my thanks to the people from both the school and wider community who played an important role in putting together this event and ensuring that the students’ work was displayed with pride. As the final week of term approaches, we will be offering a time for parents and caregivers to meet with their child’s teachers. This is a fabulous opportunity to continue strengthening the connection between school and home and celebrate the achievement of your children. There will be a barbeque from 4 – 6pm for those who wish to attend and we look forward to seeing you and hearing of the progress your young learners are making. Finally, I am looking forward to celebrating Easter and the many activities and raffles we have occurring. Primary students will be showing off their best Easter Hats on the final Tuesday of term at 8:50am. There will also be an Easter Parade in town on Saturday 31st March, for all to enjoy. I hope to see you all there! Spotlight on PBL Each fortnight you can expect to find an overview of our current PBL topics of the week, along with some handy hints to help you discuss and implement these at home! WEEK 7 - COOPERATION Being cooperative is one of our four school expectations at Proston State School, and is an integral part of a positive classroom and playground. At home you can help your child to learn to be cooperative by applying the following approach: Encourage Turn Taking (AKA: Many Hands Make Light Work) Engage in an activity with your child, taking turns to complete it, and again taking turns to tidy up! (This also works with household chores and with additional siblings). Give Specific Praise Point out why and how their contribution was important. For example, “You matched all of the socks and put them together. That helped me finish the laundry quicker. Now we have more time to play.” Offer Suggestions (not commands); Give Choices (while maintaining your rules) Commands evoke resistance, so provide an explanation and include a choice, “It is cold so you will need to wear a jumper (explanation), would you like help putting it on, or do you want to do it yourself (choice - still with the desired outcome)”

WEEK 8 - PERSEVERANCE As we near the end of the term it is common for students to begin to feel the strain of study, assessment and general school work. As this is the time that so much of their hard work is presented and assessed, it is essential that they maintain a consistent approach. Share Stories Speak to your child about a time that you have needed perseverance to accomplish a difficult task. We don’t often talk about our earlier failures, so children sometimes think that adult successes all come with ease. Be There For Them Provide support for your child when they do struggle or fail. Help them to evaluate why things weren’t as successful as they had hoped and guide them in determining how to re-plan and try again. Set them up for success in the future. Encourage them Don’t reward or congratulate only based upon a high standard of achievement, it is valuable to recognise the effort and perseverance that they have applied. Nicholas Blanch

Proston Parents & Citizens Association P&C meetings are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month during the school term at 3:15pm at the school library. Bring your ideas, skills and time to help raise money for our children. All parents and community members are welcome. Karen Fisher P&C President 41689669

Hi All, Just to let you know that Victory is running a Foodbank drop off at the Tableland Hall once

a month. This will be every second Thursday at 1.30-200 pm and the cost for registration for

the food hampers is $45. Hampers include meat, fruit and vegetables and assorted grocery

items. What is on offer will change from week to week, due to availability, but the value of

the hampers far outweighs the cost. If you are a new client, you can phone Joan to book

your first hamper, or turn up at the hall to book for next month’s drop off. Everyone is

welcome.

Any questions can be directed to Joan on Ph 4168 1710 or Mob 0474 105 919.

Bye for now, Chappy Janelle

Great Success for the Cattle Show Team This year’s show season kicked off at the Proston Show for the Proston State School P – 10 Cattle Show Team. The team had some fantastic results with Chloe Scanlan, Mersadeez Nielsen, Iutin Tetabo, Brian Smith, Lachlan Doessel and Grace Tallar all making it into the final of the Junior Stud/Prime Judging. In the end Iutin walked away with 3rd in the Prime Judging and Brian was equal 1st in the Stud Judging. In the Junior Handler competition Aiden Dotta won his age division and our very own Ag. Teacher Aide, Miss Roos, won the 18 – 25 division. The animals also had a great outing. Dangora Gully Lola (led by Grace Tallar) finished in 3rd place in her age category, our steer Turbo (led by Mersadeez Nielsen) was 2nd in the light weight category and our led heifer Coco (led by Lachlan Doessel) was 3rd in the same category. Some of the animals being fitted by Proston State School also did very well. Springvale Nice ’n’ Sassy (led by Chloe Scanlan) placed 3rd in her category, Greenwood Park Vicki placed 2nd and Greenwood Park K15 and her calf Flashy placed second and Reserve Champion Female. All of the students did a fantastic job throughout the weekend and represented their school, community and families very well. Murgon show here we come!

Easter Bonnet Parade To celebrate Easter Proston State School is holding an Easter Bonnet Parade for primary students (and any younger community members). DATE: Tuesday 27 February TIME: 8:50 (Parade time) PLACE: Under B Block Remember you can wear the same bonnets in the CWA’s Easter Hat Parade on Saturday March 31, 11:00am.

Busy Bee Prep News We have had such a busy term and we are now getting close to the end of the first term. The students have been working extremely hard and are starting to be able to work and function as a group. We are starting to do our assessments so the students will be challenged and will be tired at the end of the day. Many students do not have their hats since the swimming carnival, can you please ensure that they are at school every day, as I do not like to lend hats because of head lice. Here are some highlights of part of our technology assessment. The students prepared fruit, made a fruit kebab, and then ate it. Yum! The students all enjoyed this!

Show Highlights Proston State School students and staff had an action packed day at the recent Proston Show. Our students participated in many sections and events including the Farmers Challenge, Pavilion, poultry, Stud Cattle, whip cracking, riding a wagon in the Grand Parade, and so much more. Mrs McCormick also had great success with her miniature ponies!

Year 3/4 We have been busy working on assessment in the 3/4 classroom. We have been having a lot of fun writing chapters for the book ‘The Twits’. Our bean plants are well established and it is exciting to see each day how much they have grown. Our record so far is two plants that grew 10cm in 24 hours! The class is also enjoying creating their drama skits about rescuing a person or endangered animal. We have lots of ‘elephants’ in our class at times. Please remind your student to read every day. We are getting close to some students reaching 30 nights reading. Mrs Clarke

Year 1 News We are on the downhill stretch now, and it is wonderful to see the pride and satisfaction on students' faces as they learn and master new skills. We have been busy this week with Maths and English assessment. Today the students worked diligently on representing teen numbers. Well done Year Ones! Mrs Amery

Swimming Carnival Our recent swimming carnival was a great success! Student participation was fantastic, both in the pool and in the loud cheer squads. Many records were broken. Boyne were convincing victors with a score of 473 points, smashing Stuart on 329 points. Well done Boyne!

Star News We have been learning different strategies to problem solve our word problems in Mathematics. We have broken our additions into simple think boards. We are using them for a range of different addition and subtraction word problems. We have been investigating the language of Chance and Data and creating a word web for a full understanding of the different Mathematical terminology during the unit. Stay tuned to see our new word web for think boards. Mrs Holland
