Marion County Fair. We appreciate all of the

helped make the fair a success!

Summer Intern Farewell

First off, I want to thank all of you for making this

such a great summer. It was so much fun being able

to still be a part of the Marion County Fair even

though I wasn’t showing. I have enjoyed seeing

familiar faces and catching up with friends, while

meeting new families along the way. I have made

connections that will hopefully last a lifetime. You

all did a terrific job this year at the fair and will

continue to do so at the State fair. Even though the

summer has flown by I have had a blast. Once

again I have found out that working with our youth

is priceless. From the workshops to the show ring it

has been quite the experience and I wouldn’t trade a

minute of it. This has truly been an awesome sum-

mer that I will never forget. Again, I would like to

Bucket of Flowers

Congratulations and Thank You to all mem-

bers who participated in the Bucket of

Flowers class! This year we had 29 buckets

at the fair. It is a great fundraiser for the

County Council and they really appreciate it.

Nice Job! The total amount raised for 2017

was $270.

AK-SAR-BEN Entries

AK-SAR-BEN Entries are due to the Marion County Extension Office by Thursday, August 10th.

LATE ENTRIES WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED.

Entry forms and rules are available at the Marion County Extension office or online at: www.aksarben.org

FIRST Robotics It is time to be thinking about FIRST robotics for the fall. Marion

County 4-H is offering Junior FIRST LEGO League (jr.FLL, K-

3rd), Each year, the programs release a challenge toward the end

of August with some teasers throughout the summer.

Junior FIRST LEGO League

Over the course of about 8 –10 weekly meetings, kids will learn

about a topic and simple machines then design a poster and

LEGO model about what they learned. The model and poster are

displayed at an Expo. jrFLL meetings will be starting mid-fall.

Coaches/Mentors Needed

FIRST teams can only exist when they have volunteers to coach

them. Coaches do not need to be engineers or computer program-

mers, they just need to be interested in learning along with the

kids. If you are interested in coaching, please contact the Exten-

sion Office or email [email protected].

THANK YOU NOTES Don’t forget to write Thank you notes to anyone that supported you at the fair as well as throughout the 4-H year. Make sure you include your trophy spon-sors if you won a trophy at the fair and also make sure you get one out to those who purchased your livestock at the fair. I encourage you to handwrite all thank you notes and make sure you explain what trophy you received from them or what specific animal they purchased or let them know what they have done for you this year that you have appreciated. A simple handwritten thank you note means a great deal to the people who have supported you!

Intermediate 4-H Campout

It is time to start thinking about the Intermediate 4-H Campout. You must be a

7th or 8th grade student to attend. The date will be

announced soon. This year we will be return-

ing to the 4-H Center in Madrid for the camp!

Iowa State Fair Exhibits

All exhibits except baked items

are due to the Marion County

Extension Office by July 31st.

All Baked items are due to the

Marion County Extension Of-

fice between 5-6, Sunday Au-

gust 6th, and 7:30-8am August

7th.

All exhibits will be ready for

pick-up on August 22nd at

8:00a.m.

Record Keeping

It is time to start the Record Keeping process if you haven't already. Record Keeping/Awards Information packets are available at the Extension Office or on the web at: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/marion/info/recordkeeping.htm. Start it as soon as possible! If you have any questions contact your Club Leader or the Marion County Ex-tension Office. Completion Awards will be the same as last year. Marion County 4-H is going to move to giving an award to “Outstanding 4-Her”. A member will need to attend 6 regular 4-H meetings, participate in a service project (individual or club) and turn in a completed record book to receive the award. Anyone re-ceiving an “Outstanding 4-Her” award will re-ceive an “Outstanding 4-Her” t-shirt. All first year members will continue to receive the first year pin and third year members will still receive a yard sign. This change will not affect project awards.

**All record books will be brought to the Marion County Extension Office by October 1st.

This was the fifth year for the Marion

County 4-H Bucket of Junk Contest and it was

a huge success. We had 8 five gallon buckets of

“junk” donated by Vermeer in Pella and Weiler

in Knoxville. Each bucket was filled with a vari-

ety of scrap metal from these corporations. The

first 8 4-Hers into the Extension Office received

the buckets of “junk.” This years participants

were Patrick Wood, Raegan Decious, Coledon

Vroegh, Dane Gullion, Dalton Lovell, Dillon

Hall, Gavin Millner, and Spencer Ver Ploeg. A

special congratulations to Spencer Ver Ploeg on

being the overall winner. This year we raised

2,605 dollars, which will be used to help fund 4-

H programming. We are looking forward to do-

ing this contest again next year. We will have 8

buckets and it is still a first come first serve ba-

ses. Be looking in your January or February

newsletter if you wish to participate.

Thank You to

Larry Cummings

for auctioning them

off at the

2017

Marion County Fair!

Thank You to

Vermeer &

Weiler

for donating

the “Junk.”
