H igh School art students recently participated in a contest to have their work exhibited
at the George Washington Birthplace National Monument January through May 2019.
Senior High Painting students recently worked to create artworks inspired by natural
resources, like those found at George Washington’s former home in Virginia. Using the theme
“A good piece of land,” students created these paintings for a National art exhibit at the
George Washington Birthplace National Monument in Colonial Beach, Virginia. While the
entire class participated, only five paintings were allowed to be part of the exhibition.
The paintings will be on display from January through May 2019.

A t our halfway point of the 2018-19 school year, we have experienced a strong start and our stu-
dents are engaged in meaningful learning. We have and always will take pride in the rigorous education provided at every District level and our highest priori-ty continues to be the success of all of our students. The administration, faculty, and staff are dedicated to keeping this momentum going into 2019. The holidays are a terrific time for educators and families to come together to teach our children about the rich diversity within our community and about the many cultures and traditions celebrated at this time of the year. Often times during the holidays, it is easy to lose sight of what really matters in life. I hope everyone will take some time to reflect on what is important to you and to enjoy time with your family and friends. This is also a special holiday time for me as my tenure at Lake Shore is ending. Thank you to the entire Lake Shore School Community for the last eight years as Superintendent of one of the best school districts in Western New York. As I head into retirement with my “honey do list,” I am recalling many fond memories and great accomplishments I have experienced during my time here. As I take a moment to look back over the years, I am reminded that everything we have accomplished has been achieved through the dedication and teamwork from many people. I respect and appreciate the many students, parents, community members, teachers, staff, and administrators too numerous to mention for all that they have contributed to make the Lake Shore Central School District what it is today. I am fortunate to have worked with a Board of Education that is the best in the area! Every Board member who has served the Lake Shore Community has done so with one focus: our children. Although our budget, athletics, transportation, technology, special education, facilities, and community education are very important, nothing compares to educating our students. As I leave the District, I want you all to know how appreciative I was every day to serve as your Superintendent. Thank you very much for such a wonderful opportunity. Please welcome your new Superintendent, Dr. Charles Galluzzo, as you did me some 14 years ago when I started at Lake Shore. If I can ever be of assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out and ask. On behalf of the Board of Education and the District Office Administrators, I wish
everyone a peaceful, joyous, and safe holiday season.

Lake Shore Wins Powtoon Contest - Software Available to All
T his year, Deann Poleon, one of Lake Shore ’s innovative Technology Intergrators, has been working in classrooms with an interactive animation
software called PowToon. PowToon is the world ’s leading, most user-friendly and most intuitive animation software that allows students to create engaging, animated videos with a professional look and feel.
When they announced they were holding a contest that would offer free software accounts to all students, teachers, and administrators to the winner, she jumped at the chance.
Her video entry, using the PowToon software, was selected as a winner and now the entire District will be able to integrate it in their classrooms and presentations!
This is the first time PowToon has offered their program free to schools and they have already increased the number of Lake Shore accounts per teacher from 90 to 200. Thank you, Mrs. Poleon!
L ake Shore educators will be on the map again, this time in Atlanta, Georgia!
This February, A.J. Schmidt Elementary, in collaboration with Buffalo State College,
has been selected to present at the National Association for Professional Development
Schools 2019 National Conference.
Principal Jill Clark will be co-presenting with her colleagues from Buffalo State College.

Dressing the Part
As temperatures begin to drop, students need to think about appropriate clothing to protect them from the cold. Hats, coats, and gloves or mittens are necessary to ensure bodies are protected from extreme conditions. This is especially important on windy days in the winter months as lake breezes can have a severe effect on what looks like a bright and sunny day. Make sure students are properly prepared each day as they wait for the bus or walk to school.
Stay Informed
Staying on top of weather conditions is critical in Winter. Checking forecasts on television, radio, or the internet will help students and families prepare for the changes in weather.
But remember this is Western New York and conditions can change in the blink of an eye. Stay informed throughout the day to stay safe!
Bus Safety
All students should be on time for bus pick-up and standing in a safe spot away from the road. Parents and students alike should avoid standing or playing near piles of snow near bus stops as this may result in a slip-and-fall scenario.
Throwing Snowballs
While tempting when the snow flies, students should be reminded that throwing snowballs can be very dangerous. Ice, rocks, and other debris can mix with the snow and cause damage to bodies, and buildings. This behavior is discouraged at school.

I n recognition of World Kindness Day, 7th grade stu-dents and teachers at the Middle School celebrated
the character traits of kindness and gratitude in several ways. We began the celebration by viewing the docu-mentary, Won’t You Be My Neighbor?
Mr. Rogers, the subject of the documentary, committed his life to teaching, sharing, and spreading the words of love and kindness to all the children (and adults) of the world. He did this through his PBS program of the same name. The number 143 had a special meaning to him and does to us now as well.
The students then reflected on their own personal ex-periences of others being kind to them and shared times where they’ve been kind to others. Each student then wrote a letter of gratitude to a special someone who has touched their lives.
Their afternoon was spent creating items to spread kindness elsewhere. Origami “cranes of kindness” were folded and the students could give them to someone they felt could use a little pick-me-up. Students also colored placemats for the Christmas in
the Village breakfast, they made cards of encouragement and love for an ailing classmate, or they generated Kindness Memes to display around the building to spread the word about being kind to others.

UPK Fall Happenings
O ctober was very exciting for the UPK students at the W.T. Hoag Educational Center!
The Bookmobile came to visit and the children were able to borrow books. They will
now have routine visits to the Angola Library.
Also, the Angola Fire Department shared their expertise for Fire Safety and everyone was
allowed sit in a fire truck and learn about fire safety from Lisa Klepfer, Chuck Klepfer, Sr.
and David Garrasi.
In addition to these exciting school visits, the children also experienced their first field trip
on a school bus with a fall visit to Awald’s Farm to choose a pumpkin and more! Many
thanks to the volunteers with the Angola Fire Department, Bookmobile, and staff at
Awald’s.
Little Monsters Bash Benefits Boys & Girls Club
T he Lake Shore High School Leadership in Action Class hosted the 9th-Annual Little
Monsters' Halloween Bash to benefit the Boys and Girls' Club of Eden-Lake Shore on
Friday, November 2nd at Lake Shore Middle School.
About 180 High School students prepared the event for about 300 Lake Shore Elementary
and Middle School students. Attendees were able to choose from an awesome haunted
hallway, a fun dance with games, and a cafeteria full of food and games with prizes.
Pizzas were donated by Jimmy's Pizza in town, and baked goods were donated by generous
friends of the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Shore. All in all, the event raised approximately
$3,000 for the Club, and it was all planned by students.
Thank you to the parents and all the "little monsters" for coming and having fun for a great
cause!

Lake Shore is a Vape-free Campus
A s vaping continues to gain popularity, the Lake Shore School District would like to
remind all visitors to our campuses that it, along with any form of tobacco, is strictly
prohibited.
What’s more, vaping is on the rise in middle and high school students, and our District is
not immune to this trend.
Vaping paraphernalia comes in many
forms, and not just the traditional e-cigarette form or vaping
sticks. Vape pens now come disguised as common school or
office objects such as USB drives .
It is important to note that while not all vape juices contain
nicotine, the vapor from the devices does contain toxins found in
tobacco cigarettes like lead. They also contain carcinogens like
formaldehyde, nitrosamines linked to cancer, as well as silicate
particles associated with lung disease.
The District understands that it cannot enforce its policies
beyond school grounds, but students found to be using or in
possession of vaping materials inside or outside campus
buildings will be subject to reprimand and reprisal with no exceptions.
A number of programs exist to help in the cessation of smoking and vaping. Our school nurses and family physi-
cians can point parents and students alike in a direction that can help curb vaping. Please reach out to either for
assistance in help quitting.

A.J. Schmidt Fall Students of the Month
A bigail Dale is a student in Mrs. Pinto’s 2nd grade. Being awarded our Kind
Student of the Month made her feel “good because she likes helping other
people out”. Abigail thinks kindness in our school is important because people will be
kind right back! Her friends John and Isabelle did just that when they helped Abigail
with some work she missed during an absence. When asked for an easy way to be
kind to others, Abigail said, “When someone is sad, ask them if they’re ok.” Thank
you for setting a great example, Abigail!

J oe Jamison has been recognized for his kindness in the classroom. Upon being
selected for this award, Joe mentioned that being kind to others makes them smile.
Putting a smile on his friend’s faces makes him so happy and that kindness is
contagious. Congratulations Joe! Your friends at A.J. Schmidt appreciate the way you
spread kindness!

I n October, Highland Elementary hosted their annual Fall Fest
Celebration, sponsored by the Highland Parent Teacher Group.
Students and their families had many fun activities to enjoy
including fall themed games, face painting, a fall craft show,
dancing, refreshments, and the Scholastic Book Fair.
The annual scarecrow contest was also held during the week, and there was an array of amazing scarecrows to view in the front of the school. All students in the school voted for their favorite, most original, and the best sports themed scarecrow.
Pictured are the winners of the scarecrow contest (l-r): Tessa Spurrier, Finn Zybala, Jahannah Fairman, and Donovan Marshall with Mr. Walsh. A fun time was had by everyone.

Welcome to Our New District Superintendent
T he Lake Shore Central School District has appointed Charles A. Galluzzo, Ed. D. as Superintendent of Schools effective January 1, 2019.
Dr. Galluzzo comes to Lake Shore from the Williamsville School District where he spent the last 14 years serving as Principal of Maple West Elementary School. This school was designated as a National Blue Ribbon School, under the category of “Exemplary High Performing Schools” by the United States Department of Education in 2013. Before his employment in Williamsville, Dr. Galluzzo was a Middle School Assistant Principal in Orchard Park School District as well as serving as the Principal of Windom Elementary for two years. Dr. Galluzzo will be replacing James Przepasniak who has served as Superintendent for the last nine years. “Mr. Przepasniak has done a tremendous job leading this district. We are grateful that he gave the District notice of his retirement to complete an extensive and thorough search to determine the next superintendent of the district. We needed an educational leader that would continue the work that has been started and keep us moving forward. We knew finding the next superintendent would be a huge challenge-with such big shoes to fill,” Board President Jennifer Michalec said. “We had extensive stakeholder engagement in the superintendent search process. Dr. Galluzzo answered questions and responded in ways that fit the direction we are heading. His passion, authenticity and curriculum knowledge drew praise from stakeholder groups.” Mrs. Michalec said. “I feel connected to the Lake Shore School District, my grandparents lived in the District, and I have family there. I’ve spent a lot of time in the District, and I know the community cares deeply for its children. At this point in my career, Lake Shore was the only place I was looking to apply—it’s the place I want to spend the rest of my career,” Dr. Galluzzo said. The diversity of the District and the on-going work to meet the needs of students is exciting. I am looking forward to becoming a part of the Lake Shore School community and working with students, staff and the community-at-large,” Dr. Galluzzo said. Dr. Galluzzo holds Permanent School District Administrator Certification, Special Education K-12 Certification and Nursery, Kindergarten and Grades 1-6 Certification. He earned his Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s in Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He earned his certificate in advanced study in Educational Administration from State University at Brockport and his Doctorate in Education from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He and his wife have been married twenty-five years and have two college-age children. Dr. Galluzzo begins his four-year contract on January 1, 2019.
Please join us in welcoming Dr. Galluzzo to the Lake Shore community!

Leadership in Action Class Welcomes Guest Speakers
T he Lake Shore Leadership in Action Class is fortunate to welcome various guest speakers from all walks of life into its classroom as a means to expand students' definitions of leadership. This fall, the class was fortunate enough to
have Superintendent, James Przepasniak, Lake Shore Vice-Principal, Tim Flanagan and Lake Shore Class of 2012 graduate, Bradley Martinowicz, come speak to them about what it means to be a leader. All three gentlemen, representing three different generations, all brought profound wisdom and experiences with them. Leadership students were delighted and fascinated to hear of the various paths these men have taken to get to where they are today. The class would like to thank them for coming in and sharing their time and experiences. Hearing from different perspectives is not only educational, but it also enables young minds to open up and expand their own leadership ideals and goals.
T he Freshman Academy is proud to announce its Fall Stunning Students. These students were
selected by their Academy teachers for displaying the six "Cs" of the Academy: compassion, character, consistency, cooperation, critical thinking, and capability.
November’s students are: David Thompson, Bethany Montroy, Evan Rudewicz, Amber Ode and Connor Smith. Congratulations to these wonderful students, and thank you to their parents for raising wonderful role models.
