Newsletter, Term 3 Week 6

Environment news Thank you to all of the families that have supported our Waste Free Wednesday initiative. We have seen more reusable lunch boxes, cutlery and utensils, bees wax wrapping paper and, most importantly, a reduction in waste that is going in the bin. Our next target will be juice boxes and chip packets. I would encourage you to keep supporting this initiative and include others days as waste free as well. Our classroom recycling bins are also being well utilised to encourage recycling of paper and cardboard products. Reports from the canteen are that some students are asking for plastic spoons on a regular basis. There will be a charge for these spoons at 50c. We encourage you to supply your children with cutlery from home. NAPLAN online 2019 In preparation for schools to participate in NAPLAN online in 2019, we need to conduct a School Readiness Test (SRT) with the current Year 3s and Year 5s in week 7 of this term. A note is going home today to all families of students in Year 3 and Year 5. This SRT is not for assessment purposes and no reports will be produced. Electives @ St Joseph’s Our electives continue to be engaging for our students, staff and members of our community and it has been great to witness some of the learning continue outside of elective time. Check our social media pages for photos and updates. Singing Club Mrs Pienaar and Miss Lennox have extended their singing practice to Friday mornings for involved students. Book Week 2018 – Find your Treasure! We are right in the middle of book week, which started with a QR code scavenger hunt around the entire school yesterday. Students from the lower junior grades joined the more senior classes to ultimately find the treasure – a comfortable reading spot!

The Family Night In! is on tonight from 5.00 – 6.00pm and we encourage you to come along, enjoy a book and a hot drink.

Students are encouraged to dress up as their favourite book character, and bring the associated book, on Friday 24th August to participate in a parade after morning assembly. Jae Dornan Assistant Principal

News from the McKillop House

McKillop House is a very busy place with different groups all working out of the same space. Patrina and Tina run Little Joeys, and we have our literacy and numeracy support programs taught by Mrs. Crombie and Mrs. McPherson.

MiniLit and MacqLit – Literacy Intervention

Both MiniLit (designed for years 1 and 2) and MacqLit (designed for year 3 and up) are the programs we use to support growth in all areas of Literacy. We have been learning many different sounds in both MiniLit and MacqLit this semester. Each week we practice our focus sound with readings as well as different strategies to help spell the sounds in words. If we come across unknown words we think of how many syllables are in the words, then we think about the sound we hear in each syllable. We then say the sounds as we write the words. We also learn that one sound can have different spellings.

Libby, Riley, Emily and Payton showing one sound can be spelt in different ways

We also like using letter tiles and sound boxes to transform words. Kristopher, Oliver, Declan and Heath are working hard using their letter tiles.

The Maq Lit group has been having lots of fun playing bingo and sound chatterboxes to spell words. We really have to think.

Extending Mathematical Understandings – Numeracy Intervention EMU is a Numeracy intervention program designed for children in Year 1 and Year 2. We run 30 minute sessions, 4 times a week. Our EMU groups consist of 3 students. We cover the areas of counting, place value, addition and subtraction and multiplication and division. We want our students to be able to give reasons when they solve a problem. We ask lots of questions, such as;

Prove it? How do you know that? Is there a faster way?

These type of questions allow the students to verbalise and share their thinking which consolidates the concepts being learnt. We want our EMUs to have a really good understanding of quantity. We also teach our EMU students a range of strategies such as:- friends of ten, counting on, doubles, near doubles, bridging to ten and so on. Tyrraell, Payton, Libby and Seraphim working out what a 1000 looks like. They discovered 1000 pop sticks is also 100 bundles of 10 sticks or it could be 10 bundles of 100 sticks.

How many donuts can you see without counting in 1s? How did you work it out? I see 4 rows of 4. I know 4 x 4 = 16 OR I know double 4 is 8 and double 8 is 16. Ask your child to work out how many donuts they are? Remember… a mathematician can have more than one way to solve a problem! Oh yeah… and a mathematician can always change his answer
