Picture Interest Career Survey, Second EditionNow there is an easy way for students with limited reading ability or special needs to explore their career interests and find a job that fits.

This assessment consists of 36 items. Each item is made up of three pictures of students engaged in work activities. The pictures represent individuals working in a variety of settings and at various skill levels. In each item, students are asked to choose one picture out of the three presented that they find most interesting. Based on the pictures selected, the assessment creates a profile of the individual that leads directly to career information and potential job matches.

O*NET Career Interests Inventory, Third EditionThe US Department of Labor’s Occupational Information Network (O*NET) database collects detailed information on 95% of the labor force’s major jobs. This assessment helps students identify which of these jobs align with their interests. Students will rate whether they like or dislike various activities. After scoring their responses, students will gain insight into career areas that suit their interests and can pinpoint specific jobs to explore.

O*NET Career Values InventoryThe O*NET Career Values Inventory helps students match their work values to O*NET job titles. Consisting of just 36 items and taking less than 20 minutes to complete, the inventory scores into six work values identified most important by the U.S. Department of Labor: achievement, independence, recognition, relationships, support, and working conditions.

After students have identified their most important work values, the inventory helps them connect their results to careers organized by both values and preparation required (using the DOL’s five “job zones”). In-depth suggestions for further research and a job information worksheet help students explore those careers.

RIASEC InventoryThe RIASEC Inventory gives students a fast and informative way to explore occupations based on their interests. Using the RIASEC system developed by John Holland—the most widely used occupational-interest coding system available—this inventory allows students to identify their job interests by responding to 72 work-activity statements. Next, they are guided through the process of matching those interests to potential careers and are given suggestions for further research.

Career Exploration

NEW! Career Priorities Profile, Third Edition This assessment provides a structured method for career exploration that helps students identify whether their career objectives are compatible with their personal and work priorities.

The CPP contains steps in which students gather information about their preferences in regard to work, prioritize them, and relate those priorities to their careers of interest. The final step of the CPP involves an analysis of the information gathered and goal planning.

The CPP is intended to stimulate discussion between students and the educators or counselors working with them on specific career choices and the relative advantages and disadvantages of each.

A free instructor’s guide is available at JIST.com/resources.

Individual Career Portfolio, Fourth Edition The ICP helps junior high and high school students track their progress in academic performance and career planning. Yearly Review of Career GoalsAs you go through school, your interests and goals might change. So it’s important to review your career goals each year. Your review will help make sure your educational plans match any changes in your career goals. Answer the following questions on a separate sheet of paper and store it in your ICP. Be sure to write your name, grade, and date on the paper.

1. Have you researched new careers this year and recorded them in your portfolio? If “yes,” skip to question #3. If “no,” go to the next question.

2. Review the “Career Interest Assessment Results” in your ICP. Pick at least three jobs from those interest groups you would like to learn more about. Research and write a summary of those jobs. Be sure to record this information in your portfolio.

3. What careers do you have a “High” level of interest in? What do you like most about these jobs?

4. Did you find any careers related to the ones you are most interested in? Write down the titles of those careers and consider researching them as well.

5. What career research methods did you use? Research sources include interviews, job shadowing, letters to business and professional organizations, reference books, career information software, career resource centers, job fairs, and Web sites. What steps can you take to research further the jobs you are most interested in?

6. Do you need to change your educational plans to match your current career interests? What changes should you make?

7. Have you discussed your career plans with your parent(s), guardian(s), teachers, and counselors? Write the names of the people you’ve talked with and the advice they gave.

Barriers to Employment Success Inventory, Fourth Edition Help your students identify troublesome barriers preventing them from finding jobs and succeeding at work. Using this assessment, students rate 50 simple statements covering five categories: personal and financial, emotional and physical, career decision-making and planning, job-seeking knowledge, and training and education.

Once students identify their barriers, the BESI suggests ways to overcome them and helps students complete an action plan. Self-scoring and self-interpreting, the BESI makes an ideal screening tool for educators and counselors who need fast results.

College Majors Scorecard Current and future college students can benefit from any tools to help them find a major that is a good fit. The College Majors Scorecard (CMS) does just that. This 147-item assessment leads directly to the 49 majors most common at colleges across the country. Based on the kinds of work activities that each major is most likely to lead to, the CMS helps students pick a major by making a connection between their knowledge and abilities, their choice of major, and their future career options.

Assessing Barriers to EducationThis assessment helps counselors and educators identify the primary barriers preventing students from continuing their educations. ABE helps students develop strategies for overcoming those barriers, honestly assess the options available to them, and understand the value of further education.

After taking ABE, students are able to assess the situational, emotional, attitudinal, and material barriers preventing them from pursuing some form of postsecondary education. Students are also able to identify the postsecondary options most readily accessible to them, from apprenticeships to graduate degrees.

NEW! Financial Literacy InventoryThis assessment gives counselors and educators the chance to step in and alleviate key financial hurdles that block their students’ success.

Based on national standards created by the JumpStart Coalition for Personal Financial Literacy, the Institute for Financial Literacy, and the FDIC’s Money Smarts program, the FLI is designed to measure a person’s basic knowledge about money management and personal finance. This 60-item assessment feeds into five scales: income and careers, banking and budgeting, credit and debt, savings and investing, and rights and risks.

Life Skills

NEW! Quick Financial Literacy GuideThe five steps in this booklet will help students better understand financial terms and concepts, giving them the literacy they need for financial success.

Your students will learn the most effective steps for gaining control over their financial future. They will discover what some people take a lifetime of trial-and-error to grasp: how to improve their financial literacy and get the financial stability and freedom they deserve. The practical advice, real-world examples, and helpful worksheets in this booklet will show your students how to:

• Learn the basics of earning, borrowing, saving, and managing money.• Know where their money comes from and the “fair wage” for their work.• Understand how credit and debt work.• Improve their knowledge of personal finance and their ability to make

sound financial decisions.• Discover methods to improve their financial situation.

This quick guide accompanies the Financial Literacy Inventory (see p. 16) an assessment based on national standards and designed to measure an individual’s basic knowledge of money management. It is not necessary to take the assessment (or any test of financial literacy) before completing this quick guide, though individuals who have taken the FLI can use their results to improve their financial literacy and gain more control over their financial future by focusing on the areas that need the most improvement.
