WHAT’SINSIDE
The Attitude of Gratitude
By KYLE P. STEPLER, LMHCA Clinical Hospital Coordinator
Cancer Support Community
What is gratitude? It’s hard to define without using the word; having gratitude means you’re grateful. But a general definition of gratitude is being thankful or a feeling of appreciation for something or someone.
We mental health people got a late start on studying gratitude. We tend to focus on the negative things happening to the body like depression and anxiety rather than the positive things. But starting sometime in the 2000s, researchers began finding that gratitude was exceptionally powerful for our wellbeing.
How does gratitude work? Unfortunately, our brains are wired to be negative. That’s how it keeps us safe; when something bad happens, our brain focuses on it to keep us alert and out of harm’s way. The only problem is that this safety mechanism can be a bit extreme, focusing on those negative things that maybe we already have under control and don’t need to worry about. Here’s where gratitude comes in. By practicing gratitude, your brain changes the way it works. Instead of seeing and focusing on everything negative, gratitude helps us find the silver lining in our stressors. It helps us get out of the negative and shift our focus to more positive or neutral sides that help us deal with what is happening.
People who practice gratitude have been found to cope better with their life stressors as well as cope faster. They tend to be happier, less depressed, less stressed, have a general satisfaction with their lives, and an extensive list of other benefits. There is even some new research that suggests gratitude may have a larger influence on our wellbeing than some of the most commonly studied personality traits.
Want to practice gratitude? One of my favorite exercises is to keep a gratitude journal. Every night before you go to bed, write down three things you are grateful for that day and why. There’s a few reasons I do it this way. First of all, three things are easier than ten. Doing this at night ensures that even on the worst days you end it on a positive note. It’s important to know why you are grateful for something. We need meaning behind our gratitude instead of just saying, “I’m grateful for my children.” Lastly, writing something down stimulates different parts of our brain than when you just think about something. What you write with or on is irrelevant, as long as you are writing. Be sure to stay consistent; this isn’t a one and done thing. You don’t do one gratitude journal and it solves all of your problems! Give your brain some time to make that perspective shift.
Try out the attitude of gratitude and see where it leads you!
