LEGACY SOCIETYWE ARE TRULY GRATEFUL TO THE MEMBERS OF GILEAD'S LEGACY SOCIETY. LAURA PATEY AND LEIGH POWERS, PATTI ANNE VASSIA AND CAROLYN KIRSCH SHARE WHY THEY ARE COMMITTED TO INVESTING IN GILEAD'S FUTURE.

"Leigh and I are thrilled to be a part of Gilead’s Legacy Society. As we were growing our family through adoption, we faced many challenges parenting two sons who had been in and out of care through the Department of Social Services for over 10 years. We quickly learned that it was vital to build a network of support, not only for our sons, but for our whole family. We were blessed to have had community organizations help us over the years. Now, with our sons grown and living lives full of purpose and love, we have each committed to finding ways to pay it forward.

Through my involvement with Gilead over the past few years, we have had an opportunity to see first-hand the critical role that Gilead plays in our community. The mental health services that Gilead provides help meet the challenges and needs of individuals on their journey. Our participation in the Legacy Society is an investment in an organization that reflects our values. It is important to us that Gilead continues to provide services that improve lives - as it has for the past 50 years!"

A YEARLONG CELEBRATION OF OUR HEARTS OF GOLD

GILEAD COMMUNITY SERVICES HOLDS A SPECIAL PLACE IN THE HEARTS OF SO MANY THROUGHOUT MIDDLESEX COUNTY AND BEYOND. In 2018 we celebrated our 50th anniversary by recognizing the “hearts of gold” in all of you who support Gilead's mission. Your ongoing investment enables Gilead to meet the mental health needs of hundreds in our community. Together we looked back at the history of our organization with a sense of pride, accomplishment and hope for the future.

GILEAD TURNS 50! Gilead partnered with many of you in the community to celebrate 50 years of providing life changing services! On Valentine’s Day 2018, we kicked off the Heart of Gold campaign and never looked back! Throughout the year, 170 individuals who had given at least $500 cumulatively, earned a gold heart hung in the lobby of the administrative building. We celebrated donors to our endowment by hanging a blue heart in their name. Ensuring Gilead's long term stability is one of our strategic priorities and many of you stepped up to help us meet this priority. Thank you to all who participated!

CELEBRATING OUR 50 YEAR HISTORY was fun, informative and exciting! In April, we joined over 350 of

you at the Run for Every 1 5K road race. Together we crossed the finish line symbolizing our team spirit and determination in overcoming the tough challenges faced daily by those we serve.

CELEBRATING OUR FOUNDERS. In May, as part of our 50th Anniversary Celebration, we honored two of our founders (Richard “Doc” Wiseman and Matt Lamstein) at a donor event at Gastler Farm in Durham, CT. The beautiful thirty-five acre property was the setting for our long awaited reunion of two of the founding members of the “Gilead House”. Doc and Matt shared stories about the ideas and events that sparked Gilead’s creation

in 1968. In addition, we displayed a historical timeline using posters in ten year increments narrated live by various members and former members of Gilead. Just a few short months later, we gathered with friends and family to celebrate the life and legacy of “Doc” Wiseman after his passing. The outpouring of love and respect for “Doc” and his legacy was unmatched. We are proud to carry on the mission and will remember him as we build upon the legacy that he left behind.

COMPASSION COUNTS IN ALL WE DO! Staying true to our mission, we continued to meet the needs of the community and the people we serve. Several events in 2018 highlighted Gilead’s compassion. The Client Banquet brought us together to celebrate the many accomplishments of our clients. We heard speeches, poems, music, and more as our clients proved yet again that they can perform with the best of them! We also participated in the Camp Harkness outing. Board, staff, and administration served dinner to clients while sharing personal stories and getting to know one another. The Compassion Counts series brought us to Middlesex Community College and Old Saybrook High School. We collaborated with dozens of other providers to present two events that focused on issues facing youth and the transgender and non-gender conforming population. Hundreds of community members came together to talk about the important issues surrounding mental health. Gilead continues to look for opportunities to reach out to the community in support of everyone in need of high quality, affordable, services.

STAFF SATISFACTION MATTERS! We are proud to announce that in 2018 Gilead achieved an overall staff satisfaction rate of 94% — our highest satisfaction rate

Page 3: 2018 Annual Report - Gilead Community Servicesof money was raised to support the Gilead mission. Over twenty dinner hosts brought their guests together for the final celebration at

ever! This is one of our greatest accomplishments this year and one that we are very proud of! We could not do the work that we do without all of our amazing and dedicated staff! Thank you to all of our staff for all of their tireless work and commitment to our mission!

GRANTS AND FUNDING. Gilead has continued to diversify its funding through accessing various grants and contracts that allow us to grow our services. Highlighting this years’ new funding is $335,000 from the Nonprofit Grant Program that is being used to renovate SCAP’s exterior, provide various IT upgrades and implement our time and attendance software. In addition, Gilead has received certifications to provide Parent Education Program (PEP) trainings and Acudetox services which generate new revenue. This year, we also all worked together to successfully advocate for a cost of living increase from the State Legislature!

ENDING THE YEAR IN STYLE! Closing the 50th year out, we called on you to join us at our signature event, the Quizine For A Cause. And join us you did! A record amount of money was raised to support the Gilead mission. Over twenty dinner hosts brought their guests together for the final celebration at Wesleyan University. We reflected on the 50 years of service with presentations, words of

inspiration, and the University choir’s rendition of “There is a Balm in Gilead”. The recognition of our contributors and supporters coupled with the fellowship of our community partners, encompassed the true spirit of compassion and service to others.

THANK YOU for partnering with Gilead again in 2018. Together, we are continuing to change lives as services are being made accessible to more people throughout Middlesex County. The services that we provide would not be possible without all of you. Thank you for supporting Gilead! Your Heart of Gold truly made 2018 an unforgettable year!!!

- Dan Osborne, CEO & Gary Wallace, Board Chair

GILEAD LOST ONE OF OUR FOUNDERS THIS YEAR, RICHARD “DOC” WISEMAN. Doc was an amazing man who dedicated his life to serving those in need of mental health services.

Doc had the vision that helped to create Gilead. Consistent with Doc’s vision, his family created the Doc Wiseman Continuing Education Fund. This fund provides funding for our dedicated staff, who like Doc, give endless time, energy and passion to serve those in need.

The Doc Wiseman Continuing Education Fund aligns well with Gilead’s FY19-Fy21 Strategic Planning objective of “implementing new staff initiatives aimed

at increasing staff satisfaction”. This fund will provide $500 of funding each quarter to

applicants who are interested in pursuing additional education and training.

THERE IS A BALM IN GILEAD

Last year, I was approached by Gilead to design artwork to commemorate Gilead’s 50th anniversary. At an informal meeting, Dan Osborne enthusiastically made suggestions about what the artwork should include; I took notes and penned ideas. The piece would highlight Gilead’s remarkable 50 yearlong history of serving the mental health needs of countless individuals and families in Middlesex County. Gilead’s mission, values and the core principles of Gilead’s recovery philosophy would be important components. We agreed that lyrics from the African American spiritual hymn, There is a Balm in Gilead, were a must. A favorite of Martin Luther King, the hymn resonated with the three Wesleyan undergrads who founded Gilead Community Services in 1968.

I was at once honored and daunted by the commission. My eldest son has been a Gilead client for nearly five years. While he continues to struggle coming to terms with a life altering illness, Gilead’s support has been unwavering. I’ve drawn much strength and inspiration from the Gilead family. Its dedicated staff, volunteers, family members, clients, administration and fellow board members all believe that together we can make the world a better place for everyone. Gilead puts that belief into practice every day; I was honored by the commission. But how could everything go into a single work of art?

My initial idea was informed by my love of Asian art; Tibetan mandalas in particular. I’d seen Gilead clients with mandala coloring books at the social club and thought that the concentric geometric designs, with a center and periphery, symbolic of our journey from chaos to pure mind might be a good place to begin. I connected that idea to vintage game boards from childhood classics such as Parcheesi and Snakes and Ladders that we all loved to play. Not only could I suffuse the symbolism of the mandala with the games of chance, the Parcheesi game board was ideally suited with 40 plus rectilinear

spaces that could contain all the text that I imagined would be necessary to illuminate Gilead’s history and purpose. While the idea held promise, suffice it to say that I later abandoned it. Inspiration often happens when you least expect it. In this case, it was at breakfast one rainy morning in a lovely, secluded cottage in Maine. From the dining room table, I saw what looked like hieroglyphs, in red crayon, on a paper pinned to the refrigerator. It turned out to be an imaginative story, by a previous lodger, coherently expressed through symbols. Brilliant! This idea resolved two problems I was struggling with: working with Gilead’s logos and too much text. Who wants to read a piece of art?

If I were to reduce what Gilead is all about into two words, they would be COMMUNITY and COMPASSION. Gilead’s core recovery principles in three words: ACCEPTANCE, HOPE, and RECOVERY are realized only with the vital trinity of support from FRIENDS, FAMILY and COMMUNITY. Gilead caregivers empower individual clients through personal choice in recovery options. Touching one heart at a time - Gilead’s 50th Anniversary, Hearts of Gold Campaign mantra was rooted in this idea with the knowledge that Gilead Community Services is what it is thanks to countless individuals with a heart of gold.

And, you might ask, as I did, what exactly is the Balm of Gilead? From biblical times forward, the balm was highly prized. Derived from the buds of a shrub in the balsam family, its soothing aroma infused precious perfume; its universal curative powers were legendary.

There is a balm in Gilead to heal the wounded soul.

The rest was easy, Gilead Community Services would be represented as an enduring shrub with branches of hands supporting 50 golden hearts; its auspicious beginnings symbolized by the promise of a gold gilt, rainbow colored seed. Thank you Gilead!

Frank Ramsey, a client at Gilead since 2005, was "a wonderful man". Sadly he passed away recently. His obituary, written by his family, highlights the value they placed on Gilead’s staff who helped him through complicated medical issues. It is so touching and truly reveals the work we do and the relationships that are formed while we do this work. Carly fondly describes Frank as a "joy to be around." They met in the WISE program in 2016. “He persevered through a lot but was always a pleasure to work with.”

Frank E. Ramsey, 57, of Middletown passed away peacefully on Wednesday, October 3rd, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Born June 2nd, in Middletown, CT ... Frank loved his

mischievous cat, "Scrapper" very much. He will be missed terribly by his "Buddy" Brenda Ellison, a friend of the family for many years, who treasured his friendship, and by his "Angel" Carly Dicicco. Carly came into

Frank's life through the Wise Program at Gilead Community Services. She went above and beyond her job description, providing support to Frank and his family. They became special friends. Thank you, Carly, for being so kind and caring. You brought joy into Frank's life. The family would also like to thank the staff at the Wise program, Gilead Community Services, and at Middlesex Hospital for the excellent care that they

provided Frank. Frank was loving and always cared about and showed his concern for others.

Betsy Graziano is no stranger to the mental health field. She began her career in 1978 at Connecticut Valley Hospital and was familiar with Gilead through her work as a social worker at the Department of Mental Health Services. She was reintroduced to Gilead through another volunteer, Kathy Clark, when she attended the Run for Every 1 event in 2018. Since then, Betsy has volunteered on the Quizine Committee, Run for Every 1 2019 Committee, and regularly volunteers at the office writing thank you notes.

“I share and support Gilead’s mission – of not just treating individuals with mental illness, but providing services that help them become fully active participants in our community.”

Curtis Weybright leads the First Church Volunteer Team for the annual Run for Every 1 Road Race. They have taken Gilead Community Services under their wings, provided our team a place to feel safe, taken care of, and supported. Each year Team Gilead arrives to a room that is set up for the event including the registration tables, banners and poster boards hung on the walls, baked goods for a morning snack, clean bathrooms, and extra porta potties outside. They set up and serve lunch and stay until the end of the day cleaning up. For several months before race day, Curtis attends all of our weekly planning meetings, recruits church members to share their mental health journeys, secures a time for Gilead to speak to the congregation about our mission, and to generously donate the offerings collected that Sunday to the cause. All of that AND a First Church team represents Team Gilead during the race. Come on, that is AMAZING! Every year Curtis tells us that the church can’t handle any more people but somehow he always finds a way.

David Porteus joined the Gilead Board of Directors after a 35 year career in the insurance industry. He worked in the U.S. and abroad for a number of international companies and brings a background in finance, marketing, information technology and strategic planning.

Dave came to Gilead following a few good (Quizine) meals with friends who were involved with Gilead and was impressed with the caliber and dedication of the staff. As a parent of an autistic son, now living in a group home, he has several decades of experience dealing with issues similar to those faced by many Gilead clients and is keen to help build and maintain the support that individuals and families need.

Living in Portland for most of the last three decades, Dave spends his free time playing music and traveling with his wife of 40+ years.
