It is with great pleasure that I invite Doctors of Optometry and optometric staff to our 2018 Annual Conference & OPTOFAIR. This conference is a terrific opportunity to obtain relevant CE with renowned speakers, discuss areas of interest or concern, hear from the Association Board of Directors at the Annual General Meeting, as well as catch up with colleagues and industry partners. The theme at this year’s OPTOFAIR is “Chinese New Year – The Year of the Dog”. Please join us in honouring this important cultural event. The Annual Conference & OPTOFAIR is a great opportunity to learn and to connect with colleagues. The conference provides 20 Hours of available Continuing Educations sessions for optometric staff.

The annual Awards Luncheon on Sunday February 18 will celebrate the achievements of member Optometrists as well as optometric staff. The Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday afternoon.

Your CE attendance hours are electronically scanned and tracked as you go into and out of each CE course and a CE credit report will be forwarded to you after the conference.

Dr. Gurpreet Leekha In early 2017 I trained a new employee with a potential career interest in optometry to be a chairside assistant (or 'scribe') in the exam room. This presentation will describe the reasons you may also want to try this in your office, how to go about recruiting the right person, and the ups and down of doing so. Audience participation welcome, especially from those with experience working with scribes.

OA6 - 1CE COBC: 83.522 Resolving Conflict in your Internal Eye Care Team Trudi Charest We work in small and large teams depending on our organizations but every team will once in a while have issues with conflict. It is natural occurrence in an environment where people are working closely every day, dealing with new situations and challenges. Conflict is not the issue, but not dealing with conflict between employees can lead to all sorts of problems from staff retention, loss of productivity, loss of revenue due to patient satisfaction and more. Conflict affects work period. Understanding how to deal with it as a practice leader is an important and crucial business strategy to ensure your team is cohesive and productive.

OD/OA9 – 1CE COBC: 83.525 Vision and Learning Overview and Research Update Dr. Patrick Quaid Eye co-ordination issues can cause symptoms that very closely resemble conditions such as ADHD. Peer reviewed research shows that children with ADHD have a 3x higher incidence of concurrent binocular vision issues such as convergence insufficiency. This lecture reviews publications published by Dr. Quaids group, and others in different fields, showing very clearly that there is a need to look at learning issues much more closely than just needing 2020 visual acuity.

OD/OA12 – 1CE COBC: 83.528 Concussion and Vision Overview and Research Update Dr. Patrick Quaid This lecture provides an overview of current literature linking concussion and vision problems and also delves into the links between oculomotor function and gross motor and neck issues. This lecture will also provide examples, including actual patient video footage, of how lenses and prisms can significantly help in such cases and how a patients quality of life can be dramatically improved by rehabilitative vision therapy approaches.

OA14 - 1CE COBC: 83.535 How to Handle Difficult Adjustments Sara Moshurchak Learn elements of the perfect eyewear fit and some of the more difficult adjustments like: making wide frames fit tighter, moving temple bends forward and backward, adjusting bridges for flat/petite noses, tips for adjusting wood and horn and so much more! Sara believes that giving great adjustments is an easy way to encourage loyalty in clients. They are looking for an optician who prides themself in paying attention to the details and the best way to deliver that is through a thoughtful and personalized fit assessment and adjustment.

OA15 - 1CE COBC: 83.530 Grand Rounds for the Optometric Assistant – How to Deal with Patient Problems Dr. Petar Prpic Patient problems can quickly and easily become problems for the clinic. This presentation will explore specific case reports and clinical situations that can routinely be encountered at an optometric office. Emphasis will be on developing an understanding of where the problem arises from in order to have the information needed to quickly and effectively deal with it.

OA16 - 1CE COBC: 83.531 Pre-Screening Test Interpretations Dr. Sherman Tung The course will cover optometric testing techniques including autorefractor, autotonometer, visual fields, retinal photography, nerve fibre analysis, colour vision and stereopsis. We will go over results and tips that will help enhance your skill sets.

OA17 - 1CE COBC: 83.534 Repairs and Modifications Sara Moshurchak Learn how to repair and modify frames with Sara Moshurchak: Canada’s only custom framemaker. It's a great way to make a sale when the frame is "almost perfect, if only it were a bit more ___________." Sara and her apprentice, Dana Dempsey, will walk you through various techniques like matte-ing a frame, shrinking and stretching a bridge, adding on adjustable nosepads and what to do when an acetate frame turns white. This session is filled with tips and tricks to get you started on your journey to frame modification mastery.

Delegates will also be sent notifications via e-mail wherever possible and/or be informed through announcements on site. BC Doctors of Optometry (BCDO) reserves the right to cancel its Annual Conference, or any part of the meeting, due to unforeseen circumstances or to limit enrollments. Costs incurred, such as airline or hotel penalties, are the responsibility of the individual.

Cancellation & Refund Policy A $75.00 + GST administration fee will apply to all refunds. Cancellations must be in writing and submitted by January 24, 2018 for full refunds; 50% refunds from January 25, 2018 - February 6, 2018. No refunds for cancellations made after February 7, 2018.

Course Registration and Attendance Courses are limited by room capacities; admittance will be based on time of registration. The name badge provided in your delegate registration is required to be visible for entry into any course. Registrants are required to attend the entire session to receive continuing education credit.

Each course attendee’s badge will be scanned upon entry and exit to verify complete attendance. Continuing education credits will be electronically recorded.

All attendees are required to attend the full length of the course. Course auditing is not permitted. You need to attend a minimum of 50 minutes for each 1 hour of credit. If you do not meet the minimum requirements of 50 minutes for each 1 hour of credit, you will not receive CE credit.

CE Credits Delegates are requested to complete an evaluation of each session attended. The evaluation will be sent by e-mail at the end of each day of the Conference to the email address that you provided upon registration for this event.

Continuing Education Verification letters will be sent by e-mail to each delegate within four weeks of completing the evaluation and uploaded to the ARBO CE Tracker Database. It is the delegate’s responsibility to provide BC Doctors of Optometry with correct OE Tracker numbers upon registering. While we upload the credits to CE Tracker, please retain your verification letter as it is the responsibility of the delegates to maintain their continuing education records for reporting to your appropriate College or Licensing authority.

Policies and Notices (Continued) Course Notes Course notes, if they have been provided by the session speaker, will be available for download before the conference. Delegates will receive an email with download instructions closer to the date of the conference. Audio Recording Select continuing education sessions may be audio recorded for future use. Please note personal audio and/or video recording of any presentation is not permitted and cannot be rebroadcasted.

Photography All delegates accept that they may be photographed or video recorded during the event. Consent is hereby provided to the BCDO to use delegates’ images by name or without, whether alone or with other persons, for the purpose of promotional or educational material, publications, on the BCDO website or any other form of media. All delegates waive any right to inspect or approve the image and to be compensated. Furthermore, delegates agree to hold the BCDO free and harmless from any claims when used lawfully within the scope described above.

Delegate Information
