A professor of ICU, Anaesthesia, Medicine andEngineering, Prof. Fraser has published >300 peer-reviewed publications, and co-wrote and edited the firsttextbook on Mechanical Circulatory Support. He headsup the Critical Care Research Group (CCRG) out of PrinceCharles and St Andrews Hospital. He oversees researchprojects that include a rapid adrenaline delivery devicefor cardiac arrest,
an app to diagnose delirium, and a method to keep transplant hearts andlungs alive outside the body. One of his most well-known achievements washis work with Brisbane engineer Daniel Timms on the BiVACOR – the world’sfirst artificial heart, which is progressing through its testing phases in the U.S.Prof Fraser will speak about the journey his career has taken him on, theexperience of pushing the limits in medical research and the patients at thecentre of his work.

Penni is currently working as a Junior House Officer at theSunshine Coast University Hospital, having completed herinternship there. Originally from Tamworth in rural NSW,Penni graduated from The University Of Queensland in 2016after spending time in Brisbane and Hervey Bay for MedicalSchool.

Bennett is a Junior House Officer employed by the SunshineCoast Hospital and Health Service. Graduating from theUniversity of Queensland, Dr Naprasnik has a keen interest inanaesthetics, rural and remote medicine. He is a staunchadvocate for improving the working conditions and generalwelfare of junior doctors in the Sunshine Coast HealthService.

Dr Charlotte Alexander - PGY2, Gold Coast University Hospital Charlotte completed her internship at GCUH, where she wasawarded Intern of the Year in 2017. She has spoken on thetopic of mentorship at FIX17, a conference surroundinggender equality in medicine, in New York City. She is hopingto train in the specialty of Emergency Medicine and ispassionate about medical education and doctor wellbeing.
Timothy completed his BSc/MBBS at The University ofQueensland in 2017, and has an interest in Cardiology. Hehas completed rotations in Cardiology, CardiothoracicSurgery and Geriatrics. He is concurrently completing aMasters of Medicine at The University of Sydney. In his lifeoutside of medicine, he enjoys good food, travelling and arthistory.

Dr Boulton is an Emergency Medicine (FACEM)consultant at the Sunshine Coast University Hospital,and co-founder of WRaPEM; Wellness, Resilience andPerformance in Emergency Medicine. It is her passion toresearch, investigate and share information on self care,organisational change and compassionate leadership toensure doctors are able to thrive in their workplace. Dr Katie TrebleDr Treble is a British critical care doctor who has worked inAustralia since 2012. She spent time last year working withMedicines Sans Frontiers in a paediatric hospital in Bria, arural town in the Central African Republic (CAR). During hertime there, the paediatric hospital also had toaccommodate for adult trauma patients following anoutbreak of fighting in the region. She will be sharingsome of her experiences with MSF and the lessons to belearned working in low resource areas.

Dr Rumali Jayalath, Neurosurgery, PAHDr Jayalath studied medicine at James Cook Universityand trained at Greenslopes Private Hospital in her earlyyears. She then underwent specialist neurosurgerytraining at leading centres around Australia. She isactively involved in training surgical registrars andrecently acted as joint neurosurgery convener. for theRoyal Australasian College of Surgeons annual meetingin Brisbane.
Dr Jayalath operates at Greenslopes and Mater Private Hospitals, and has a special interest in cerebrovascular surgery and brain tumours.

Professor Selva Niranjan - Cardiology, GCUH
Professor Niranjan is a Senior Consultant Cardiologistand Director of the Physician Training Program at theGold Coast University Hospital and Professor ofMedicine at both Griffith and Bond Schools of Medicine.He graduated from the North Colombo Medical Collegeand did his specialty training in New York City, in internalmedicine and cardiology.
His passion is in bedside teaching and training of medical students andphysician trainees, and clinical interests are in clinical cardiology,echocardiography, cardiac imaging and complex coronary artery disease.
Dr Tung Vu - Paediatrics, GCUHDr Vu is a Paediatrician and the local regional examinerof Paediatric and Child Health Division for the RoyalAustralasian College of Physicians, and the PaediatricTraining Program Director at the Gold Coast UniversityHospital. He enjoys being the lead supervisor for thejunior doctors rotating through the Paediatric unit.
Dr Vu graduated in 1999 from the University of Queensland. He undertookPaediatric training at the Mater Children’s Hospital and Royal Children’sHospital in Brisbane as well as spending time in a various regionalQueensland Hospitals. He has a special interest in childhood diabetes, andstrives to provide innovative measures to improve the health outcomes forthe children with diabetes in the Gold Coast Health Service.

Lavinia pursued a career change from charteredaccountancy to science when her children were born.Unfortunately, mid-way through her Bachelor ofScience, aged just 31, Lavinia suffered a stroke. Sheresumed her Bachelor of Science to drive her cognitiverecovery, going on to complete her PhD in ProfessorBartlett’s laboratory at UQ’s

Queensland Brain Institute, where she was a post-doctoral research fellow.Lavinia investigated ways of improving cognitive recovery following stroke byactivating precursor cells to increase the production of new brain cells(neurogenesis, a form of neuroplasticity). Lavinia has now taken on anAdvancement role at QBI and has established the QBI Stroke Advisory Boardto raise awareness and philanthropic funding to support the vital researchbeing undertaken at QBI.

Elise Gilbertson is a Staff Specialist in General Medicineand Obstetric Medicine at Sunshine Coast UniversityHospital. She studied at University of Queensland andcompleted Physician Training at Royal Brisbane &Women's Hospital and Nambour General Hospital.Internship at Nambour inspired her to return to theSunshine Coast as an Advanced Trainee
along with her General Practitioner husband, with the goal of improvingwork/life balance. Elise divides her time between General Medicine andObstetric Medicine and is passionate about teaching and mentorship of juniordoctors. Her research interests primarily focus on medical optimisation of highrisk pregnancy. In her spare time Elise enjoys the distraction of her twochildren, dogs, horses and acreage.
You’ve covered it in class and seen it happen on the wards,but your pharmacy colleagues are the ones that willprevent and pull you up on prescribing errors with theseimportant medications. Brush up your ability to start andmaintain a heparin infusion, bridge to warfarin, cover forVTE prophylaxis and manage penicillin allergies whentreating infection. Anticoagulation can be tricky, but thisinteractive session will have you prescribing treatmentssafely and effectively.

Interns are often called to review patients who are beginning to decompensate, but don’t yet meet criteria for a precall or a code blue. How you respond in these situations can have an impact on the patient’s care and eventual outcome. In this multi-station workshop you will work in small teams to navigate the decisions and interventions required in each scenario.

Dr Kimberley Budgen returns in 2018 for one of the most highlyrated workshops on the program. Currently working in radiationoncology whilst completing a master in bioethics, Dr Budgen hasappeared as both a performer and adjudicator in medicolegaland ethics debates. Her session will cover important dilemmasyou may face in your first year of practice, and challenge the wayyou think about ethics in medicine.
