  • As the Edmonton Chamber Music Society nears its 65th Anniversary next year, we are delighted to present our 2018/19 Concert Series. Our coming season is a very special one, with major artists we’ve enjoyed in seasons past and new performers appearing on our stages as well.

This June we celebrate the good weather with our Summer Solstice Music Festival. It will be an exciting week! Visit our website for more information and updates during the year ahead - edmontonchambermusic.org.

As one who appreciates classical music, you will already understand that love of music is an essential human quality. Sharing the joy can be truly rewarding; if you have friends who may be interested, especially younger friends, please pass along our materials.

Vox Luminis, founded in 2004 in Namur, Belgium, is an ensemble specializing in the performance of 16th

through 18th century vocal music. The ensemble has been praised for its seamless blend of high-quality individual voices, exquisite tuning, and clarity of sound. After a performance on the acclaimed Miller Theater Early Music Series in February 2016, the New York Times called the group’s program “revelatory,” adding that the singers “blended beautifully.”

One of the world’s leading period instrument string quartets, the London Haydn Quartet was born in 2000 out of a passion for Haydn. The quartet has collaborated with period clarinettist Eric Hoeprich to record the Brahms and Mozart quintets on the Glossa label and has embarked on recording the complete Haydn quartets on Hyperion. Eric Hoeprich is one of the leading exponents of the historical clarinet, from the Baroque to the late Romantic period. He teaches at the Paris Conservatoire, Indiana University’s Early Music Institute, and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

PROGRAMJ.S. Bach: The Circle of Creation

Alison Mackay’s acclaimed J.S. Bach: The Circle of Creation was premiered in 2014/2015. This

multimedia creation combines text, the music of J.S. Bach, and stunning video images to explore the

world of the artists – papermakers, violin carvers, string spinners, and performers – who helped Bach

realize his musical genius. The production, performed from memory, blends 21st century technology with

an exploration of the tradition and skill of old-world craftspeople and artisans. The program will consist

of excerpts from Bach’s cantatas, violin sonatas and partitas, cello suites, orchestral suites, the Goldberg

Variations, Brandenburg Concerto No. 3, and solo harpsichord works.

“The Juilliard still plays, magically, like a single four-voiced instrument, and the music it makes sounds like the most natural and inevitable thing in the world.”

    – Broad Street Review

With unparalleled artistry and enduring vigour, the Juilliard String Quartet continues to inspire audiences around the world with its performances. Founded in 1946, and widely known as “the quintessential American string quartet,” the Juilliard draws on a deep and vital engagement with the classics, while embracing the mission of championing new works – a vibrant combination of the familiar and the daring. Each performance of the Juilliard Quartet is a unique experience, bringing together the four members’ profound understanding and total commitment to sharing the wonders of the string quartet literature.
