    2018-2019 Annual Report

  • Chaplaincy Care • Support • Healing • Spirituality

LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CEOThe pages that follow are a summary of the activities and accomplishments of the Association of Professional Chaplains for the 2018-2019 fiscal year. In that time, APC has been hard at work, faithfully building APC, promoting professional chaplaincy, and advocating for spiritual care as essential to holistic care afforded patients, clients, employees, service members and others. This report describes only some of the accomplishments and highlights from our last fiscal year (November 1, 2018 - October 31, 2019).

    Reaching Out to Local Leaders:

    • The APC Board of Directors began a coordinated outreach campaign to contact and connect with local leaders to ensure that their ideas, concerns, and questions were fully listened to.

    • This campaign began with notes and phone calls to state representatives, education chairs, certification area chairs and others to understand what was happening in chaplaincy on the local level. From these notes and conversations, a rapport was built between local leaders and members of the board.

    • In preparation for the next APC Strategic Plan, board members used their relationships with local leaders to get detailed information about their ideas and concerns in relation to APC and professional chaplaincy. This data was then collated and indexed for future board discussions.

    S.W.O.T. Analysis:

    • Building off the feedback from APC’s local leaders, the board began a S.W.O.T. analysis for APC’s position in the chaplaincy marketplace.

    • S.W.O.T.: Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats: This exercise uses a matrix to assess and evaluate the organization's place in the professional market.

    • In addition to feedback from APC’s local leaders, APC had a poster presentation at the 2019 APC Annual Conference where members/attendees could write and input their own thoughts onto a poster sized chart.

    • Using the feedback from leaders and members at large along with their own insights, the board recreated this S.W.O.T. exercise during their annual board meeting in preparation for the 2020 APC Strategic plan discussion.

    Strengthening Partnerships:

    • APC has continued to work to strengthen our partnerships with our Strategic Partners (ACPE, NACC, NAJC, CASC/ACSS) to advance the profession and the implementation of professional chaplains.

    • APC and our partners regularly met with our Strategic Partners in-person and virtually to discuss ways to deepen our relationships and identify common goals.

    • APC sent members regular updates on these discussions and encouraged feedback from the membership to ensure transparency and identify potential “blind spots” in these discussions.

    • The goals of these talks ranged from discussions of mergers of the groups to collectively funding research projects and informational campaigns on the value of the profession.

    • These conversations have continued beyond the 2018-2019 fiscal year and will continue into 2020.

As the work of APC and our members continues, the board and membership will continue to be instrumental to advancing the quality of the profession and its scope in providing spiritual care for all those that want it. Our collective efforts will ensure a strong professional association for chaplains and ever improving care for those that we serve.

    Blessings,
