Service and social justice are at the very heart of the mission of Lakewood Catholic Academy. Students of all ages learn about social justice issues and participate in a variety of service initiatives in our local community. The Saints of LCA try to do their part to change their corner of the world for the better. We encourage you to take a moment and review all that was accomplished last year in the infographic that follows.

One unique aspect of Lakewood Catholic Academy’s social justice work is the international service learning experience. LCA is the only Catholic elementary school in the Diocese that provides international service opportunities to its middle school students.

In June 2019, 26 courageous Saints traveled to the rainforest of Ecuador. While there, students participated in cultural events like dancing, jungle hikes and jewelry making. The students also learned

about Ecuador’s history and the social issues facing its citizens including environmental, educational, health and water related struggles. Most importantly, the students of Lakewood Catholic Academy served the community by working on a clean water project that will provide safe water to a community that otherwise had no access. Additionally, students worked on an agricultural farm and plantedbanana trees.

The students and staff that participated in the Ecuador mission trip learned valuable lessons that they could not otherwise learn in the classroom. They realized although they are young, they have the power to change the world. Our traveling Saints also realized that their world was not THE world – they came to discover that the world is much bigger than they ever dreamed of, yet the distance between people of different cultures is closer than imagined.

Ultimately, the Saints of Lakewood Catholic Academy lived out the Gospel imperative, “to whom much is given, much is expected,” and in doing so, their hearts were changed forever.

St. Augustine once wrote, “The world is a book, and those who

do not travel read only a page.”

LCA is a Top Place to Work!Lakewood Catholic Academy has been named one of 150 2019 Top Workplaces by The Plain Dealer! The honor is based on employee feedback gathered through an anonymous survey, measuring several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, execution, and connection.

Each year, LCA invests significant resources in world-class professional development to help provide the highest quality education to our Saints. In 2018-19, teachers attended conferences and workshops at LCA and across the country that covered general best practices in education, training for our International Baccalaureate program, strategies and resources for exceptional learners, and ways to incorporate Guided Reading into our K-4 classrooms.

LCA Shares the SPARK for Elementary EducationOn August 6, 2019, Lakewood Catholic Academy hosted the second annual SPARK Conference, a first class professional development experience for elementary educators. Continuing the success and popularity of the inaugural conference in 2018, this year’s conference doubled in size, welcoming over 250 teachers and administrators to Tri-C Corporate College East for a day to inspire and energize them for the school year ahead.

The day opened with the presentation of the SPARK Teaching Awards and an inspiring keynote by Kim Bearden, Co-Founder, Executive Director, and Language Arts teacher at the highly-acclaimed Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta. In the afternoon, attendees participated in breakout sessions covering best practices in literacy and interdisciplinary instruction, STEAM education, literature and the arts, and creative school marketing. The day concluded with a prayer service and the announcement of next year’s SPARK keynote speaker, Ron Clark.

Thanks to Our Indians Volunteers!For the fourth year, Lakewood Catholic Academy has partnered with the Cleveland Indians to provide volunteer help at the stadium gates, passing out giveaways during home games. Early Childhood Program Honor Roll of DonorsAt the conclusion of the 2018-19 fiscal year, Holy Family Learning Center (HFLC) formally joined Lakewood Catholic Academy and was renamed to the Early Childhood Program at Lakewood Catholic Academy. Our youngest Saints on campus are enrolled in developmental and educational, age appropriate programs, which serve children from six weeks old to age 5.
