“T’is the season” for reflection, looking back and forward. We celebrateour lives and our accomplishments and we remember our losses. Inmy younger days I didn’t realize the necessity of pain and loss. It
never gets easier, but it adds perspective to our lives and gives more value toevery joy we’ve ever experienced. It gives us hope for future joys.
Focus is full of celebrations of achievements, new litters and shared loveof Dobermans. We devoted this issue to our standard coverage of showsand trials. Congratulations to those who won and those who participated. Thanks to all who submitted our articles, which give Focus its character, and those who placed ads in support of Dobermans and UDC. We haveseveral new columns created by UDC members.
One of those columns is especially dear to my heart. Breeders losepuppies before they’re weaned; it’s just a fact of life. It’s heartbreaking tolose our dogs no matter what age. Yet, like friends we’ve had forever, whenwe lose those we’ve lived with longer than most it is even more bittersweet. A member suggestedwe begin a column for UDC members with Dobermans that have lived 10 or more years. That hithome for me, so now I’m using the rest of my space for some candids of mine.
I hope you all enjoy Focus and have Happy Holidays!

The goal of the project is to bring ourregistry software into the 21st century and to makeregistration information for working-titled Dobermansavailable to our members over the Internet.
The cost of the project is approximately $37,000 and willtake about eight months to complete. The Registry SoftwareCommittee plans to kick off the project in January 2019.Kudos to UDC Registrar and Mid-Central Regional DirectorJudy Schmelig, Mid-South Regional Director Larry Kye andVice President Jacque Matson for their efforts in reviewingand evaluating the proposals.

AWDF Suspends USCA From Membership. On October12, 2018, AWDF President Anne Camper communicated toAWDF member clubs that the AWDF has permanentlyexpelled the United Schutzhund Clubs of America fromthe AWDF following a board of inquiry investigation intoactions taken by the leadership of USCA to subvert theAWDF. Effective January 1, 2019, the AWDF will no longerrecognize titles earned at USCA trials. Titles earned BEFOREJanuary 1, 2019, will be recognized, and may be usedto progress to the next level title, and will count forqualification for international events. After January 1,qualifying scores must be earned at AWDF affiliated trialsin order to compete at international events.
While this situation poses some short-term challengesfor UDC members who are actively competing in IPO/IGPthrough USCA clubs, it also may create opportunities andmotivation for the creation of new UDC member clubs.Current USCA members will be able to use their currentUSCA membership and scorebooks to trial at AWDFaffiliated trials until June 1, 2019. This gives the remainingAWDF member clubs a little time to develop their responseto the changing landscape. Some existing USCA clubscould convert to UDC clubs with some changes to the UDCmember club and membership structure, allowing our GSDfriends to earn internationally accepted IGP titles at UDCclubs in the future and possibly bring additional incometo the UDC.
NOTE: Minutes can be found in their entirety in the MembersOnly section of the UDC website at uniteddobermanclub.com.
15
The situation remains fluid. It is certain that USCA,having the largest number of members and holding thelargest number of schutzhund trials in the United States, will not quietly accept the decision of AWDF. There ismuch rumor and speculation on social media. Your boardof directors will continue to keep you informed of eventsas they unfold from official channels.

Over the past weekend, I was able to certify my twoDobermans as Human Remains Detection (HRD)dogs with a nationally recognized organization. The
evaluation toward certification spanned three days andincluded individual evaluations for land, buried, water, building, elevated searches and automobiles. Each searchfocused on locating a variety of “sources” as might be partof an actual search.
In the days that followed, I was asked multiple timeshow I go about training my dogs and preparing them forthis type of evaluation and work.
It was a thought-provoking question. My first inclinationwas to outline the steps and leave it at that. But the realityis that training a dog — whether for search or for anotheractivity — is a far more complex process. In many ways, training a dog successfully has to be based, in part, onthat dog’s personality, its ability and how you relate toeach other.
My household has two Dobermans, both selected andtrained for Human Remains Detection. The older of thetwo, River, is 5 years old. The younger, Quinn, is 2. Bothdogs are very different in their personalities and in theirapproach to SAR ,so I have had to adjust my trainingmethods for each dog.
I believe that in order to train a dog successfully youhave to understand and acknowledge that dog’s individualpersonality. We all have steps for training a dog to dosomething, but each dog is different and what works for onemay need to be adjusted for the other. Their personalitiesdevelop with age and experience and exposure to theirworld, so it would stand to reason that their training hasto adjust as their experiences change.
In my case, River is a softer, more thoughtful dog. Hedoesn’t always believe in himself and will second guesshis decisions pretty regularly. When I field River, I haveconfidence that he knows his job and will get it done. He

won’t lie to me (unless I push on him). Knowing thatabout him, I sometimes have to handle him in a waythat encourages him to commit to what he alreadyknows. He is a methodical searcher, careful, detailedand thorough, and that has been a characteristic of hispersonality since the first day I started working withhim. River is a partner in every way, and working withhim means that I am an active part of what is going on.In the end, we do things together.
Quinn is the exact opposite. She is a bright, fast, spirited young girl and she doesn’t see any reason tofool around. She loves to work as much as she loves hersqueaky ball. When she works, she is all about business. She is almost a Type A personality. She charges throughlife on her own terms. When Quinn gets out of the carand begins a search, she will want to start the searchbefore I’m ready. In one recent training session, I lether out of the car and she ran into the sector, foundthe training aid and told me about it before she wasfully buckled up and ready to go. She got her ballreward, did a victory lap, squeaked it several times, jumped in the car and was ready to head home. Quinncan clear a medium-sized pole barn or the first floor ofan office building in less than three minutes. She’s arocket. Working with Quinn is a matter of steppingback and letting her do her job. The old adage of “shutup and hold the weanie” is exactly how you have tohandle Quinn.
Both dogs were started with the same foundationwork. When I evaluated them for search, I looked forvery specific qualities. Over the years I have learnedthat, for me, the most important qualities in a search
dog are problem-solving skills, hunt driveand interest in the scent. Without thosethree things, I will not have a successfulHRD dog. So each dog was tested and eachdog showed they had those skills.
Once home, we began the imprintprocess and learning the fundamentals ofsearch. Puppies should begin imprintingon scent as soon as possible so that odorbecomes second nature. Learning the scentand controlling the environment at thispoint is very important.
At this stage we are also developingobedience skills and socialization. I exposemy puppies to as many unusual situationsas possible. We go to every store thatallows dogs. We play on playgroundequipment. We walk and play on unstablesurfaces. We rock climb and walk in thewooded areas. We learn agility equipment. We train in lots of different environmentsand weather conditions. Always important,we also learn to travel well because a lot oftime is spent traveling.

Search Continued from page 15 For each dog I keep arecord of goals. I have a check list of skills the dog musthave. I document what we have learned and been exposedto and what still needs to be learned. We document everystumbling block and a plan for trying to overcome thatproblem. When I hit a snag, we back up, alwaysremembering thattraining is not a linearprocess, it’s a circularprocess. We test a lot.Getting evaluated is agood way to figure outwhat you know and whatyou need to work on,always remembering thatan evaluation is a measureof what your dog doeson that one day in thatone situation.
Scent work can betricky because it’s not justone skill, it’s a skill thedog will have to learnin a variety of differentsituations. You are, infact, teaching your dog tounderstand an odor insideand outside, on sunny
days when scent rises, on wet and drearydays when scent is close to the ground.Weather conditions and air currentschange how scent works and how yourdog recognizes it.
In the end, the most important thing Ihave to remember is that we are a team. Oursuccess is going to be based on us workingtogether and understanding each other. Ihave to fully understand and acknowledgehow each dog works and how we worktogether. When someone asks me, “What isyour dog doing?” I have to understand thebehavior and what that behavior means atthat moment. Becoming a successful teamtakes lots of time and effort.
Because of the way he works, when I workRiver I have to be a more active part of hissearch in order to make sure that we havecovered our sectors. River keeps me active, but his level of detail and thoughtfulnessleaves me confident that he hasn’t missedanything. River is the type of personalitythat, if he were human, would have madea good engineer because he tends to beso analytical.
Quinn, on the other hand, needs littledirection. When I work Quinn, I just get outof the way and let her do her thing. But inher case, because she is so fast, I have toactively work on slowing her down and
making sure she has covered everything she needs to do.In the end, it all comes down to how we work together.
I have to communicate what I want, but I also have to trustmy dog because it is their ability that I rely on in search. Wehave to have a true partnership to succeed.

In my life I have had two compelling interests: thenorthland and my paying profession, chemistry.I also have spent much time breeding and training
dogs. At first, my interest in the north and in dogs mayseem incongruent with my position in academia andthe more sophisticated activities that accompany thatposition; indeed, many of my professional associatesappear to regard me as some sort of paleo nut.
Nearly all of my dog training was within the contextof what used to be called “Schutzhund” (“ProtectionDog” in German), but the name now has shifted to themore politically correct “IPO” (“International PoliceOrganization”). In addition to tracking and obediencephases, the protection phase of an IPO trial consists ofa choreographed sequence of encounters between a“handler” (good guy who works with the dog) and a“helper” (bad guy). It can appear very artificial anddivorced from reality. I here present observationssuggesting that IPO training builds a much deeper set ofcommunication skills between the handler and his dog.
On most of my wilderness canoe trips, I have beenaccompanied by a well-trained dog. By well trained, Imean we had worked together, formally trained togetherseveral days each week, and slept curled together on

In thoseearly years, professionaldog trainerswith whomwe workeddiscouragedtalking to yourdog. I knewbetter. I talkedto Adamantconstantly. When we were together, he was with me during almost allof my meetings in my office. Most students were delightedwith my buddy; they could talk to him and he did whatthey asked. Being a scientist, I devised tests that convincedme that Adamant had a contextual understanding of about100 words, most in English, some in German.
When canoeing, my usual procedure was to drive fromhome to La Ronge or to Missinippe on the Churchill River. These two villages were primitive Canadian Saskatchewancommunities. Many inhabitants were so-called First NationPeople (i.e. Indians). In those days, thesecommunities were theend of the road north. We would then arrangeto fly my dog and meto a point on the map(with our canoestrapped to thepontoons of the float
plane.) We would later be picked up at another point on themap on a specified date. Times in the bush for Adamant andme without outside contact were up to 30 days. (Of course,in those days, there were no satellite phones.)
It was in June of 1993 that Adamant and I flew intoWheeler Lake in northern Saskatchewan, southeast of CreeLake. We set up camp on the long sand beach that cups thesouthern end of that lake. We were scheduled to be pickedup 30 days later at a beach on Macintyre Lake. My planned

Adamant Continued from page 21 30-day route wasa circuitous tour through a series of lakes, partly in theWheeler River drainage and partly northwest of therenear Cree Lake.
That evening, after sharing a fried walleye dinner,Adamant and I lounged by our fire. It was an ideal northernsummer evening; the sky was almost clear and we werein that magic twilight period that passes in those latitudesbetween evening and dawn. A few high cirrus cloudsstreaked the northern sky with their rose and orangebrush strokes.
Suddenly, Adamant sounded his deep resonant bellowingalarm bark and came to attention pointing west along thebeach toward where it faded into the dimness of the forestedge. The object of his attention continued toward us.
Adamant was a classic black male Doberman Pinscher, large for his breed at about 105 pounds of lean muscle, trulyimpressive when in this defense mode. Although the lightwas dim, it appeared that his challenge had caused theintruder to pause. All of his protection training had beenworking with me in mock combat with a human opponent(“helper”); conflict with a dog-like adversary hadbeen avoided.
The beach was sand, about 25-feet wideand about one-half mile long, cradlingthe south end of Wheeler Lake; wewere midway along the beach. The bear slowly approached,Adamant stood at attention, not barking, but checkingwith me in our long-established multi-channel communicationmode. When I was surethat it was a black bear(not a grizzly slightlyout of its expectedrange), I startedplanning my defense. All of our food, shelterand supplies for thenext 30 days lay behindus in our tent or underour inverted canoe asthe bear approached. There was no detectablewind, so I could not guesswhether the bear couldsmell the 30-day foodcache in that tent. Therewere no trees suitable fora bear-proof cache nearour camp. I now regrettedthat lack, but I probablywould not have had timeto set up one even if it hadbeen available.
I did what many written sources had advised. I made itclear to Adamant that this was real. He was to protect us. Imentally divided the front line (the beach) into outer (lakeside) and inner (muskeg side), and signaled to Adamant thathe had the muskeg side.
He took his station. I raised my large sun hat at arm’slength above my head and danced, leaped and shoutedalong my perimeter. Adamant studied me for a fewmoments and then the lightbulb of understanding flashedon. He took command of the inner defensive line: running, leaping, barking and challenging.
Thank God for his Schutzhund training; he never tried tocharge the bear. An untrained dog of Adamant’s breed andtemperament probably would have charged the bear, launching a direct defensive attack. But a dog that comeswithin reach of a bear that large is a dead dog. Adamant hadbeen drilled to close with an enemy only when commandedto do so. The bear approached cautiously, mostly on fourfeet, often standing and wrinkling its nose; verifying myconjecture that the nearly absent breeze brought it no clues.I knew that bears are nearsighted. Finally, after stopping, standing, sniffing and staring from about 30 feet (three or
four bear lengths), the bear wheeled and walkedslowly back down the beach toward fromwhence it had come. As anticlimax, we (mybrother and I) sat by the fire the rest ofthe night. The bear returned twice, butretreated each time after a brief look.
Do you recognize what I havedescribed? You should. Theprotection phase of an IPO trial islargely a sequence of encounters ineach of which the dog preventsthe bad guy from advancing butdoes not attack the bad guyunless and until commandedto do so, or if the bad guycharges the team. Adamant wasapplying this “hold and bark”to the bear. Perhaps he feltfrustration that I neversignaled one of the releaseswhen, in a trial, he wouldclose with the bad guy. Theimportant point is that heunderstood what aspectsof his training should betransferred and whichshould not. At true dawn, the bear retreated behindus through the muskeg.
The remainder of thetrip went as planned. I was

intersecting andrecognizing manyof my old routesI had followed inprior years. Weencounteredno problemsworse than halfswamping ourcanoe whilewading downa rapids. Thescheduled Beaveraircraft arrived ontime and on site atthe end of our trip.
Thus the remaining 29 days of our trip were (welcomely)less exciting, but they were not without peaks of joy. Fordays after the bear encounter, Adamant pranced aroundcamp. He understood what he had done! He seemed tobe saying, “My great granddaddy and Cro-Magnon hadto do this all the time.”
Adamant died on November 11, 2008. He lives inmy memory.

P erhaps you have noticed a change in your dog’sbehavior lately. Maybe they are knocking barsdown during your agility practices or trials, or
not turning their corners as sharply to shave a fewseconds off your time. Has their conformationchanged? Their posture or their gait? Are they havingtrouble getting up on furniture or navigating thestairs? Or are they suddenly sensitive in a certain areawhen you gently stroke their back or while lifting apaw? These could be signs that your dog might becompensating because of pain, discomfort oraberrant communication in thenervous system.
“Animals cannot tell uswhen they have small achesand pains,” explains Dr.Ginette St. Pierre, CertifiedAnimal Chiropractor. “Theycarry on by changing theirgait, their behaviour and theirmovements to compensate fortheir discomfort.”
These changes maygo unnoticed untilobvious signs suchas stiffness, limping,
avoiding activities, or yelping occur. During an assessment, certified animal chiropractors are trained to detect thesesmall changes, then subsequently provide adjustments andcare to prevent further injury.
Dr. Ginette graduated from the Canadian MemorialChiropractic College in Toronto and started her career as achiropractor in 2009. She is an animal lover to her core. This love inspired her to become certified in animalchiropractic. She completed her certification in animalchiropractic at the Veterinary Chiropractic LearningCentre in Ontario and is certified by the College ofAnimal Chiropractors.
“Chiropractic care is not just for humans,” asserts Dr.Ginette. “In fact, it is very beneficial to animals as well.”Chiropractic is a method of healing the body rooted in theknowledge that all of the body’s cells, tissues, organs andsystems are controlled by the central nervous system, which is housed within the spine. Doctors of chiropracticspecialize in neurology. They access the nervous systemthrough the joints of the body, especially those of the spine.

Joints send information to the brain regarding posture, movement, and speed. When motion in a particular jointis limited or has “gone wrong,” a warning message is sentto the brain in the form of a pain sensation and thecommunication from the brain to the rest of the bodyis limited.
The process and benefits of chiropractic are very similarfor animals as they are for us humans. Dr. Ginette will lookfor abnormal and restricted movement of the joints of thespine and extremities. She will then adjust as necessary torestore proper movement, reduce pain, improve mobility, naturally allowing the nervous system and body to heal andfunction at its maximum healthy potential.
A chiropractic adjustment is a highly skilled and precisemovement applied by the hands to the spine or any otherjoints in the body. Adjustments are gentle, and useminimal pressure to restore proper function to thejoint and stimulate the neuro-musculoskeletalsystem. Adjustments are always adapted to meet theneeds of the dog.
Owners often ask Dr. Ginette why their dog wouldsee a Certified Animal Chiropractor. She explainsthat owners seek chiropractic care for their pets formany reasons. Chiropractic care is tremendouslybeneficial for healthy animals, and can also beused to treat animals that are experiencing specificproblems and conditions.
She explains that chiropractic care helps yourdog’s body function at its best, and facilitates theirbody’s ability to heal itself — and in that regard, thepossibilities are endless. Because the nervous systemcontrols the entire body, many owners bring theirdogs in for chiropractic care even when they are notclinically symptomatic or having a particular issue.
However, for dogs that are having some health concerns,Dr. Ginette says that chiropractic care can help for manyreasons, including: relief from back, neck, leg and tail pain;enhancing athletic performance; dealing with strains, sprains, muscle spasms, nerve problems, movementissues; and to recover from injuries from slips and falls.Chiropractic care can also help to ensure properdevelopment of puppies, deal with senior pet problems, cope with arthritis, address asymmetric postures, andimprove overall spinal health for dogs of all ages.

Almost 20 years ago my colleague and I in the Search & Res-cue Dog Association of Alberta (SARDAA) developed a testto evaluate puppies and adult dogs (maximum age twoyears) before admitting them into our training program. We had observed many examples of frustration anddisappointment in handlers when their dogs did notperform well in training. Sometimes this was due to poortraining techniques, but more often the dog simply did notpossess the drives necessary for the work. Our aim was toincrease our success rate (and reduce the stress level foreveryone) by only accepting dogs with appropriate aptitudeand by providing step-by-step training instruction to ourhandlers. If you are wondering why we do not accept dogsover the age of two years, thisis because, in our experience, dogs by this age havedeveloped enough bad habitsto prohibit their success in SARwork; i.e., chasing wildlife, crittering, not coming whencalled and generally doingtheir own thing instead ofworking in partnership withthe handler. We do sometimesaccept dogs that have hadextensive training in relatedareas such as SAR work withanother group, trackingand/or obedience, but thisis an exception.
We have tested severalhundred candidates from awide variety of breeds andcross breeds and have learneda great deal from theseexperiences. We often go backand look at the initial testresults for the dogs on ourteam just to compare how thedog turned out compared tothose test results. Nine timesout of ten, it’s bang on!Another important thingwe have learned is that thedogs are very honest duringour evaluations; however, sometimes the humans areanother matter. We have alsolearned that there are manywell-intentioned owners whosimply are not dog trainers. But that’s a subject foranother time!
Our test is a combination of Volhard, Brown-Marsolais,along with some of our own ideas. Unemotional andunbiased interpretation of the test results is key — theevaluator needs to carefully observe each exercise and builda total picture of the dog’s aptitude. The tests must be runby a stranger to the dog and in an unfamiliar area. We havefound that two evaluators are recommended as they canbuild on each other’s opinions/experience.
Please also bear in mind that we have only tested ‘green’dogs/pups; none of the dogs we tested had had priortraining for SAR work.
No dog is perfect, but you need to understand thestrengths that are most important and balance those against
other less desirable outcomesduring the evaluation.Experience doing this isvery important. For instance,we have found that a dogwith low hunt drive willeventually run into troublein the training process.
During evaluations thedogs show very honestlywhere their aptitude lies onthe scale. Some drives canbe enhanced to some extentin training and some drivescan be extinguished if notnurtured properly, butinherent drives cannot becreated where none exist.
Our tests include thefollowing: evaluation ofthe dog’s sociability, independence level, nervestrength, noise sensitivity, food, hunt drive, and preyand play drive, followed upwith unstable surface for allages, and confined space andheight tolerance in olderpuppies and adults. Also, don’t forget to considerhealth issues and the pup’sgeneral conformation!
Evaluation results are thencharted on a scorecard andthe results analyzed by theevaluators and an opinion asto the suitability of the dogis determined based on theresults and the evaluators’experience. During the

evaluations, it will become pretty obvious as to which pupsare suitable and which are not. The challenging part isknowing which of the aptitudes will work for or against thedog and handler in the long run. No dog will be top flightall the way through the evaluation, but some aptitudes aremore important than others. As an example, a pup that ishighly independent but that has high scores in all othercategories will likely be a challenge to train and not a goodmatch for a novice handler. An experienced handler willhave a much higher chance of success with this pup if theycan discover and engage a strong reward system in the dog.A pup that exhibits good scores with a strong high preydrive but very low in hunt drive will be a challenge as whenpush comes to shove as it will probably not be a relentless
search dog. It might be great in the short beginningsearches, but they typically don’t perform well indifficult circumstances.
Personally, in Dobermans I like to see a sociable pupwith solid nerves, that is not particularly independentand that possesses a very high toy drive combined withhigh hunt drive. Hmmm … sounds like the perfect SARdog candidate!
In 2019, the Search & Rescue Dog Association of Alberta(SARDAA) is celebrating 30 years of excellence in providing SARK9 resources in Alberta and Canada. Michelle is a foundingmember of SARDAA and has certified five Dobermans for SARwork during her career.

F ive dog teams hailing from Ohio, Wisconsin, Alabama,Kentucky and Michigan began trial day in McHenryCounty, Illinois on, by all accounts, some of the best
tracking grounds the competitors have ever seen. Briskovernight temperatures covered these lush fields with a thinlayer of frost heralding the fall season. With articles donatedby Hallmark K9 in position, all teams steeled themselves for tracking under the scrutinizing eyes of DVG Judge Lisa
Little. Little has judged tracking at two DVG Nationalevents and is the DVG’s head judge in North America. IPO1 team Summer Melillo and Elara’s Aiko vom Herlevenchecked in and promptly set the bar for the morning with a whopping V score of 99 points right off the bat. No pressure! All remaining teams met the challenge and performed admirably, no failures here.
With a collective sigh of relief all competitors caravannedback to OG Edgerton’s field. Julie Martinez and Grant Smithof Mittelwest German Shepherds located in Wonder Lake,Illinois, allow OG Edgerton use of these beautifulgrounds. The irony was not lost on all present that thisGerman Shepherd facility was inundated with Dobermansleft, right and center. For one day the Doberman had freerein. For competitors in IPO, a day focused entirely on theworking capability of the breed was a welcomed changefrom GSD-dominated events.
Mittelwest grounds provided not only a phenomenaltrial field but separate parking for competitors, affordinggenerous shade and isolation for team pre-trial preparations. These conditions created the perfect environment forteams to get in the “zone” before all eyes fell to them asthey walked onto the field, trial ready. The close proximityof Mittelwest to the 2018 DPCA Regional and NationalSpecialties held in St. Charles, Illinois was an addedbonus. It afforded the attendees of DPCA an opportunityto culminate a weeks’ worth of seminars, conformation, agility and all things Doberman to observe an IPO event, something a number of people took advantage of.
Obedience kicked off at 11 a.m. under sunny skies andcool temperatures with IPO1 team Summer Melillo andElara’s Aiko vom Herleven and IPO2 team Russell Barry

and Swift Run’s Magnus checking in for obedience. Bothdogs were under control and raring to go. Team Aiko tooktheir position at the line ready to work first while TeamMagnus headed to the long down Doberman markersspecifically made for this event by TNC Fabricating, LLC.With Magnus assuming the long down, the stadium work began.
These routines were followed by the IPO3 teams of Simone Jeans and Chalmar’s Ockham’s Razor “Kuno,”
Jason Bane with Gleena vom Dragonerreich “River” andAshley Stursa and Marco vom Landgraf. Critiques fromJudge Little were informative, shedding light on observedareas for improvement while also drawing attention to impending rule changes due to take effect in 2019.
One noticeable development at this year’s competitionwas the first-ever live streaming of the event. OG Edgertonbroadcast the event on both the UDC and OG Edgerton’sFacebook pages. OG Edgerton’s own Shawn Gaddow tookon this challenge and delivered in spectacular fashion whilesimultaneously juggling the demands of trial secretary. Although he did encounter a few hiccups throughout the day’s filming, at the peak of online viewership 30 individuals had tuned in to watch the obedience in themorning and protection in the afternoon. The entire collection of performances for both obedience and protection are available for viewing on YouTube.
While the crowd feasted on a well-stocked lunch buffet, the obedience equipment was cleared, the Gappay blindserected and the lines for the callout and escape marked.Judge Little pulled national-level helper Dominic Scarberryand regional-level helper Robert Haddad aside for final instructions, and protection was underway! Competitorshad the experience of running protection routines on a fieldthat meets national-level stadium dimensions. Runningright to left, all dogs took advantage of the space andopened up, enjoying the search for the helper. To keep up,the handlers had to march at a good clip down that centerline! Spectators were treated to a collection of strong, memorable performances. Team Marco captured the coveted High Protection and Helpers Favorite trophies with a 99-point routine!
Luckily for us, Whitney Rupp of Chops Photography wasthere to capture all the action. All but one of the imageswithin this article are credited to her. After the dust settled,it was apparent that the schutzhund gods were kind, bestowing all entered teams with passing scores.

All IPO3 dogs exceeded the minimum qualifyingscore at a national event for the IDC Weltmeisterschaft. Now the burning question from this event and thespring 2018 UDC National is, which teams will take thenext step to represent the UDC in Hungary in 2019?
All competitors were asked about their high points fromtheir participation in the 2018 Fall Classic. Here are
some of the take aways:
Summer Melillo: “My favorite moment was in tracking. I put in a lot of hours:
early mornings, night tracking, twice-a-day tracks. A lot of hardwork and persistence went into that 99 performance, and it literally brought me to tears when Lisa said, “Congrats on your

99 track.” That was the first “V” I had ever gotten. It honestlydidn’t matter what happened the rest of the day. Right there inthat moment, nothing else mattered. The one phase I had workedso hard for finally paid off.”
Ashley Stursa:“It was an excellent event — great host club, efficient,
beautiful location, safe and consistent helper work, and live streaming video for those that couldn’t attend. It was particularly exciting for me for my dog to earn 99 points in protection for the second time in his IPO3 career.”
Russell Barry:“Great event. Great people. Great facility. Great weather.
Wish we could get more competitors.”
Simone Jeans:“It was an honor for OG Edgerton to host the IPO Fall
Classic. Although we did not get anywhere near the number of entries we were shooting for, the teams that did participateprovided stiff competition, sportsmanship and mutual respect.Truly a classy group of people.”
It is amazing that after all those months of planning, promotion, sponsor and donor outreach it boiled down toone Saturday in October that flew by so rapidly. For OGEdgerton it was an honor to host this event on behalf of theUDC. We extend a huge thank you to all sponsors anddonors whose generosity was crucial to the success of thistrial. We had hoped for larger entry numbers by offeringAPr, UPr and FPr titles not traditionally offered at nationalchampionships. Although this strategy did not entice anyadditional participants, it is hoped that future IPO teamswill take advantage of opportunities such as these which arecrucial to sustaining IPO within the frame work of the UDC.
Summer’s statement says it all. It is long hours, a lot ofhard work and persistence to develop an IPO-level dog. Thissport is for the stout of heart who ask themselves the samequestion at every trial, before every phase, as they go to gettheir dog and partner out of the crate: “Remind me again, why am I doing this?”
To all those who choose to go out and put their years of training on the line in front of crowds with high expectations and judges with sharp pencils, the answer isobvious. It is to prove to themselves that they can indeedsuccessfully conquer the sport that is IPO.
OG Edgerton extends a huge thank you for all the sponsors and donors that contributed to the success of this event. A complete list can be found on page 36.

2018 UDC National Report by Suzan ShippAt left: National Show Chair Suzan Shipp presents the Lifetime Achievement Award to UDC member May Jacobson via telephone.
Wow team, we didit! For two yearsin a row the
Mid-Central WorkingDoberman Club has successfully hosted theUDC National in 2017and 2018. It could nothave happened withouta hardworking team ofMCWDC members andUDC members from
across the country. We shared the joy of seeing long-timefriends that we don’t get to see every day, and we got tomeet several new folks to add to our group of Doberman enthusiasts. It is always exciting to anticipate renewingthose friendships and making new ones as we all share our common passion with this wonderful breed. We look forward to next year and supporting the Vita NovaDobermann Club as they host their first national!
We selected the Missouri State Fairgrounds in Sedalia tohost the 2018 event once again. With more than 215 acresof well-maintained grounds and variety of buildings andshelters, it was perfect for the many events that occurredduring the week.
This year our club really worked hard to bring a jam-packed schedule to our members: three conformationshows, three obedience trials and a thrilling line up of IPOcompetitors for our IPO Championship. We hosted a WAEwith John Schoeneman as our evaluator as well as CGCevaluations. We certainly want to thank Joeri Veth forstepping up and providing us with a working-dog seminar.Thank you to Petra De Silva for organizing one of the mostwell-attended cardio clinics that we have had at a UDC National. We understand people take off a week of work and travel time to attend, and we wanted them to feel it was worth the time and expense to come, show and trial. I honestly do not think we could have crammed in one additional thing!
As always, the UDC National starts off with our temperament testing, then right on to our conformationand obedience programs. We stretched our budget andstepped up this year to bring in Tamas Dohoczki from
Hungary (FCI) to judge our conformation show #2 as well asour IPO trial. Picking a lineup of judges is always a dauntingtask, and we were thrilled to have a nice lineup of judges tosupport our trial. Our other judges were John Schoeneman(AKC) and James Moses (AKC) for conformation, and RickGarvin (AKC) and James Comunale (AKC).
We would be remiss if we did not recognize and congratulate our search and rescue (SAR) teams who attended and supported the UDC National, our Dobermans, and our club. We are extremely proud to have these hard-working teams as part of our event each year. It gives them a chance to work in new areas with new distractions. Eachteam pays its own way for training, search missions orevents. It is a huge investment in both time and money. We are also proud that Troy Tapp and his Doberman Habu, one of our MCWDC new members, is now working hard tocertify Habu as a SAR-working Doberman after attendingthe national and meeting members of the SAR group.
Thursday night was our AGM annual meeting and banquet. The board has been working hard to update ourby-laws, and we were able to get some of the revisions voted on and approved at the AGM. As part of the annualmeeting, our club was honored to be part of a special awardto a very special Doberman lady, Dr. May Jacobson, who received our lifetime achievement award and a beautifulcrystal clock commemorating her long-time dedication toour breed as an AKC judge, temperament-test evaluator, breeder and competitor. May always gives selflessly of hertime and talent.
The Mid-Central Working Doberman Club would like tothank all who supported us with trophy donations, silentauction donations and purchases, event entries, catalog ads and kind words. It truly does take a village to put on a successful national. Our national show chairs did an outstanding job in taking care of their areas of responsibility.Without this support we could not have had a successfulnational. Thank you to the UDC Board of Directors for yourvote of confidence and allowing us the opportunity to hosta great national. In all, I believe we accomplished our goalto bring you a power-packed national.
We are looking forward to next year and supporting the Vita Nova Dobermann Club as they host their first UDC National!

What Dog Owners Need to Know About the FDA’s Grain-Free Diet Alertby Anna Burke
This information was sent by the American Kennel Club,akc.org, in October. While the investigation is ongoing and mightbe of concern to Doberman owners, it is always important to beaware of all research in the field of dog nutrition.
The FDA launched an investigation into potential linksbetween canine heart disease and diet — specificallygrain-free diets. We’ve compiled the information you
need to know to understand this recent development. What is the FDA Investigating? It is easy to jump
to conclusions anytime we see an FDA headline about petfood. After all, our dog’s health is important to us, and we know that diet can make a big difference in a dog’s wellbeing. We reached out to Dr. Jerry Klein, the Chief Veterinary Officer of the AKC, to hear his thoughts on the investigation.
“The FDA is investigating a potential dietary link between canine dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) and dogseating certain grain-free pet foods. The foods of concern are those containing legumes such as peas or lentils, otherlegume seeds, or potatoes listed as primary ingredients. The FDA began investigating this matter after it received a number of reports of DCM in dogs that had been eatingthese diets for a period of months to years. DCM itself is not considered rare in dogs, but these reports are unusualbecause the disease occurred in breeds of dogs not typicallyprone to the disease.”
What is Dilated Cardiomyopathy?Dilated cardiomyopa-thy (DCM) is a type ofcanine heart diseasethat affects the heartmuscle. The hearts ofdogs with DCM have a decreased ability to pump blood, which often results in congestive heart failure.
Some breeds, especially large andgiant breeds, have a predisposition to
DCM. These breeds include Doberman Pinschers, GreatDanes, Newfoundlands, Irish Wolfhounds and SaintBernards. While DCM is less common in medium and small breeds, English and American Cocker Spaniels are also predisposed to this condition.
When early reports from the veterinary cardiology community indicated that recent, atypical cases in breedslike Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Whippets, Bulldogs, and Shih Tzus all consistently ate grain alternatives in their diets, the FDA took notice.
Should you be Concerned About Grain-FreeDiets? According to Dr. Klein, “At this time, there is noproof that these ingredients are the cause of DCM in abroader range of dogs, but dog owners should be aware ofthis alert from the FDA. The FDA continues to work withveterinary cardiologists and veterinary nutritionists to betterunderstand the effect, if any, of grain-free diets on dogs.”
As a general rule of thumb, the best thing you can do for your dog’s dietary health is to consult your veterinarian, not the Internet. Together you can weigh the pros and consof your dog’s diet and if necessary monitor your dog forsigns of DCM.

How and when did you acquire this dog? I picked upCaden in Germany as an 8.5-week-old puppy in January2014. I had seen his mother Wilma von Eschenbruch IPO3AD VPG3 FH1 FH2 (call name “Lilly”) earn third place atthe IDC WM 2013 in Italy. She was top-placing female and Iwas so impressed by both her workon the field and her character inthe opening and closing ceremonies.I contacted Caden’s breeder in October 2014 and met Lilly in person, and I was so excited to be approved for a puppy.
Did you have any specificgoals in mind when you selected this dog? Caden waspurchased with the intent to doIPO dog sport. I was so impressedwith aptitude for IPO at a veryyoung age. Caden earned his BHand WAC before the age of 20months. Caden went on to earnhis IPO1 (went High Protection),IPO2 (went High IPO2) and IPO3(went High in Trial) titles whileonly 2 years old.
What were the specific qualities you were lookingfor when you selected this dog? I was looking for a balanced dog that was stable and showed good drives andpower for IPO work. Caden showed all of this, and was bredone time prior to his death. His pups from that litter are
showing many of the same traitshe displayed. I kept a male pupfrom this litter named Brio Rosevom Krieghund, and I am thankful that Caden left me with Brio to honor his memory.
Congratulations to Caden andMonica for earning the UDC Versatility Companion (VC) title by demonstrating successfulparticipation in a variety of activities and work suitable to the versatile nature of theDoberman Pinscher!

How and when did you acquire this dog? Penny wasbred by my long-time friend and UDC member and breederPenelope Brooks, MD, of Morgana Dobermans. I was veryinterested in the breeding between UDC CH Bell’LavorosAugustus, IPO3, SchH3, WD3, ZTP-SG1A, WAC and UDCCH Morgana's Heart Of Fire, BH,WAC, CGC, as each dog’s pedigreecontains a nice mix of workingand conformation-type dogs.Penelope chose two pick bitchpuppies from the litter and allowed me to bring them homeand select the puppy that Ithought would make the best IPO prospect. I used Penelope’s observations of the litter andpuppy temperament test resultsalong with my own observationsand tests to select Penny.
Did you have any specificgoals in mind when you selected this dog? I knew that I wanted to take her as far as she could go in both IPO and conformation. I thought I might
want to breed her if she performed as well as her pedigreeand early puppy tests indicated.
What were the specific qualities you were lookingfor when you selected this dog? For IPO, I looked for
food, ball, and prey drive, alongwith natural grips. I wanted a dog that was socially confident and not sensitive to loud noises or strange surfaces.
What are some of the mostmemorable events that youhave experienced with thisdog? At the 2009 UDC National, when Penny was about 7 monthsold, noted Search & Rescue handlerand UDC member Irene Korotevevaluated her for SAR potential, andPenny passed with flying colors. Webriefly dabbled in SAR activities(wilderness search) for a summer, but due to time constraints I had to make up my mind whether toparticipate in SAR or IPO. I could not do both. IPO won.

Penny at 4.5 months. January, 2009.
Penny earns High ScoringDoberman and HIT fromNovice B. Doberman Pinscher Club of Charlotte, November 2013.
Winter 2018 • UDC Focus uniteddobermanclub.com 57
In November 2013, Penny and I earned High ScoringDoberman and High in Trial (All Breed) in the DobermanPinscher Club of Charlotte Obedience Trial from Novice Bwith a score of 198.5 against approximately 150 dogs.
In April 2015, at the 25th Annual UDC National, Pennyand I won the coveted UDC High Point All-Around Awardsponsored by breed icon and UDC Past President RayCarlisle in memory of Vic Monteleon, Past President ofDPCA and founder of the DPCA Working Aptitude Evaluation and the DPCA Longevity Program. To win thistitle, we participated in the UDC adult temperament test(passed), two UDC conformation shows (2 CCs, 2 RWB),two UDC obedience trials (195, 193.5), the UDC Breed Survey (BSA-VG2a), and the UDC IPO Championship (97-74-85a) all at the 2015 event!
What are your future goals forthis dog? Penny is now 10 years old(August 2, 2018) and retired. Her primary jobs are bed warmer and comforter, and keeping the youngerDobermans in line. During her lifetime, she produced two nice litters from twodifferent sires (the Treasure Seeker A litter sired by AKC/UDC CH Chaos vomKoby Haus, SchH3, IPO3, FH2, AD, ZTP1A, WAC, ROM, VCX, CGC, TDI, CDX,and the Treasure Seeker B litter sired byIkarus vom Hellerwald, IPO3, FH2, AD,ZTP-V1A).
At the time of this writing, out ofnine weaned puppies, she has producedfour offspring that are titled in workingsport (2 IPO1, 1 IPO3, 1 Mondio RingBrevet) and two UDC conformationchampions. Her puppies are still training and competing in IPO andshowing in UDC and AKC conformation.Penny is also the grandmother of Treasure Seeker’s Calypso Nights, CGC(Quinn), who is now deployed as aSearch & Rescue dog in Kansas at justover 2 years of age. Quinn is owned byUDC member Maria Ciski.
I kept and trained three of Penny’spuppies from her two litters: UDC CHTreasure Seeker’s Asher, IPO3, WAC
(Asher); Treasure Seeker’s Absolute Gem, CD, IPO1, WAC,CGC (Abby); and UDC CH Treasure Seeker’s Black Pearl, BH,WAC, CGC (Pearl). Following an emergency spay that sadlyremoved her from my breeding program after only one litter, I placed Abby in a wonderful home with Carole Bohanen-Uhler, the breeder of her great-grandsire “Silas,”where she is thriving as an only dog. Asher and Pearl remain with me and we continue to train regularly. Pennystill enjoys playing fetch ball and kick ball and hangs outwith me in my home office.
Congratulations to Penny and Leslie for earning the UDC Versatility Companion Excellent (VCX) title bydemonstrating conformance to the breed standard, geneticsoundness, stable temperament, trainability, and workingdrives appropriate to the Total Doberman!
