Head CoachLynette Woodard

Lynette Woodard, a two-time U.S. Olympian, a four-time All-American, the all-time Division I women’s scoring leader, a 10-time Hall of Fame inductee, and the first woman to play for the world-renowned Harlem Globetrotters is beginning her first full season as head coach of the Winthrop women’s basketball program. A native of Wichita, KS, Woodard played college basketball for the Kansas Lady Jayhawks and noted head coach Marian Washington. During her four-year career, Woodard scored 3,649 points and helped lead KU to three straight Big Eight championships while breaking 24 school records. She was voted to the Kodak All-American team all four years, was the 1981Wade Trophy winner which goes to the college player of the year, and was a GTE Academic All-America selection. Wood-ard graduated from Kansas in 1981 with a degree in speech communications. Woodard, who is considered a pioneer in women’s basketball, was inducted into the Kansas Hall of Fame in 1990, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of

Fame in 2002 and 2004, the Globetrotter Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2005. While still in college Woodard began playing in international tournaments, traveling to the Soviet Union in 1979, where she helped the U.S. women’s team win a gold medal in the World University Games. In 1980 Woodard earned a place on the U.S. Olympic women’s basketball team. This achievement was dimmed, how-ever, when the United States boycotted the Moscow Olympic Games. She was also part of the U.S. team that captured the gold in the 1983 Pan Am Games in Caracas, Venezuela. When Woodard graduated from Kansas, she played two years in the Italian Women’s Professional League before returning to the U.S. in 1983 and made the most of her second Olympic opportunity when she cap-tained the 1984 U.S. Olympic team to the gold medal at the Los Angeles Games. After winning the gold, Woodard had a chance to make a childhood dream come true when she tried out for the Harlem Globetrotters. She was among 10 women who competed for a chance to play with the Globe-trotters and made history when she became the first female to join the famous team of basketball ambassa-dors in 1985. In 1987 Woodard decided to leave the Globetrotters and return to professional play abroad. She played two more seasons in Italy, helping her team to the Italian league championships in 1989, and then went to Japan, where she played for the Daina Securities team from 1990 to 1993, winning the division championship in 1992. She returned to the U.S. and worked for a time for the New York Stock Exchange before taking the posi-tion of director of athletics for the Kansas City, KS school system for two years until 1997 when she came out of retirement to play in the newly formed Women’s National Basketball Association. She played one year for the Cleveland Rockers and one year for the Detroit Shock before officially retiring as a player. In 1999, she returned to KU as an assistant coach under Coach Washington where she served for four seasons alongside Cook. When Washington retired for health reasons in 2003, Woodard served as interim head coach in 2003-2004. In 2006, Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius appointed her to serve as co-chair of her new Governor’s Council on Fitness.

There he held a 28-2 (.933) overall record, which are the most wins in a single-season in the program’s history. He was nominated as a finalist for WBCA/Marine Corps Junior College

Lynum began his coaching career at Overhills High School where he was the boy’s basketball head coach from 2010-2012. He contributed to the revamping of the program that led to a winning historic season earning a State Playoff berth and the first boy’s basketball college signees. Harris began her collegiate basketball career at the Univer-sity of Delaware and as a sophomore she led the team with 13.6 points per game and made 51 three-pointers. Those numbers led her to Colonial Athletic Association Second Team honors, being voted the team’s most valuable player and earning the Blue Hen Basketball Club Outstanding Achievement Award. She transferred to St. John’s (NY) for her senior season and in her career she finished with 1,016 career points. In her one season at St. John’s the team advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, finishing the season ranked 14th by the Associated Press and

Strength & Conditioning Since Winthrop began its Strength and Conditioning program 13 years ago, it has become a key component to the success of Winthrop Athletics. The program was created to aid in injury prevention and improve athlete performance. All student-athletes receive personal instructions and attention from head strength coach Ben Abbott and his staff that includes assistants Jena Ready and Andy Parker. Abbott and his staff are responsible for designing and implementing the strength and conditioning programs for all 18 sports teams. They work closely with each individual coaching staff to design a program that is geared for that particular sport. Winthrop offers a modern and well-equipped strength and conditioning facility in the coliseum as well as the baseball stadium.
