President’s Report By Karen Venema, President

Ottawa is a growing city, booming with new walking and cycling trails, outdoor art

and beauty all around. The Ottawa Voyageurs explored new neighbourhoods and

trails throughout 2017 and I am proud to say that we discovered some gems. We

began the year snowshoeing at Mer Bleue and some diehard club members continued

snowshoeing together throughout the winter months. We explored a new

neighborhood in the vicinity of Petrie Island, saw some different architecture in the

golf club neighbourhood near the Riverside Pub and ventured across the Rideau River

on the Adawe Crossing.

Publicizing these excellent events has led us to introduce new members to the

wonderful world of volkssporting. Our Christmas Lights walk was a big hit because of

the use of social media and resulted in the participation of 132 walkers, the majority

who were not members of either club.

We thank the volunteers who organized our special events this year, in particular the

members of the Castor committee. Our membership enjoyed the Annual General

Meeting and pizza lunch, dessert and coffee after the Fall Rhapsody walk, BBQ

sausage and corn on the cob after the Petrie Island Tour, the Volunteer Appreciation

event and the well attended Christmas Dinner. Thank you to everyone who

participated as without you, there would be no need to host these social events.

I’m looking forward to reintroducing the Rothwell Heights walk after a few years

break as well as a popular walk a number of

years ago, the Two Cemeteries walk where

we explore the beauty of the Notre Dame and

Beechwood cemeteries. We have planned to

explore old Ottawa East on World Walking

Day and the newly redeveloped Main Street,

home of Ottawa’s first “complete street”.

I hope that many of you will consider

joining me at the Annual General meeting of

the CVF in Halifax, Nova Scotia this coming

May 25 to 27. It should be a really good time

as Halifax will be beautiful then.

Invest in your health and walk with us in

2018. I’m sure you will find new places and

meet new walkers. As your president, I

appreciate how gracious and welcoming our

club members are when new walkers join us

for an event. Your enthusiasm and experience

help new members feel welcome. Thank you

2017 VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION DAY

Every year in November the two clubs – Ottawa Voyageurs and Nepean Nomads – gather together to walk and

socialize as a way to say Thank You to all who have volunteered for the clubs. This year the event was hosted by the

Ottawa Voyageurs who lead walks in the Mer Bleue Bog, a nature preserve in the east end of the City of Ottawa. A

German inspired lunch was served at the Maple Leaf Almrausch Club.

We cannot say Thank You enough to you, who volunteer your services and without you the clubs would not be able to

survive.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS WALK DOWNTOWN OTTAWA by Marion Boom

After a year’s absence to walk in Orleans, the OVO Christmas Lights Walk was once again in downtown Ottawa with

the start point being City Hall. Registration began at 4:30 with groups departing the area starting at 5PM.

Thanks to some great work by our Publicity Coordinator, Marg Dempsey, the turnout this year was the best the club has

seen in years with over 130 people (and some 4-legged fury friends) of all ages and sizes coming out on a beautiful snowy

evening to enjoy the lights of the city.

Both routes, the 6km and 10km, started out together from City Hall up as far as Wellington St where the with the 6km

veered off to the Left and Parliament Hill and the 10km heading in the opposite direction. The lights were on at

Parliament however it was still a bit too early to enjoy the show so many people either returned after the walk to see the

show or hung around and waited the few minutes for the show to begin.

After leaving Parliament Hill the route continued down Wellington St and past the Garden of the Provinces before

turning to cross the river and into Quebec. The route continued down Laurier St, past the Museum of History before

turning to cross the Alexandria Bridge and back into Ottawa.

The last part of the 6km route allowed the walkers to enjoy the lights on the Chateau Laurier Hotel, around the War

Memorial and the National Arts Centre before heading down Elgin St to the finish at the Fox and Feather Pub. Although

the routes went in different directions, both the 6km and 10km were able to enjoy the lights in various locations including

Confederation Park, Parliament Hill, the War Memorial and Majors Hill Park.

After all that fresh air and exercise many of the walkers, including many of the first time walkers, stayed at the Pub for a

well-deserved bite and a chance to enjoy some time with friends before heading off for Christmas.

For all those who joined us for the walk, hope you enjoyed the route and the lights.

Thanks to all the volunteers who helped out at this event; registration table, as a group leader (or sweeper), stamping

books, etc. Without you the evening wouldn’t have been as great a success as it was.

Happy New Year everyone and hope to see you on the trails in 2018.
