Iwouldliketothankalltheprofessionalswhohaveachievedtheirsixeducationcreditsthispastthreeyears.Wearetryingtochangethecultureofourprofessionandelevatingthosestandardsisakeyingredient.Therearenumerousotherprofessionsthatrequirecontinuingeducationandwewanttobeattheforefrontofcreatinghigherstandardsforourteachingprosandqualitytotheconsumers.Wearecommittedtothisdirectionandexcitedattheprospectsofcreatingthehighestlevelteachingprofessional.

Third,Ihopeyouhavesavedthedateonyourcalendartojoinusforthe2017USPTAWinterForumheldonFeb.2-3,inTroy,Mich.Ourcommittee,alongwiththeMichiganHighSchoolCoachesAssociation,hasbeenhardatworkcreatinganexcellentlineupspeakers.Thesetwodaysshouldrefreshandreinvigorateyourpassionforteachingtennisandgiveyouanopportunitytobringadrillortwobacktoyourclub.

2016 USPTA Annual USPTA Midwest Awards Program Open for Nominations

Deadline March 1, 2017

Awards reception: Western & Southern Open, Aug. 17

Our awards period is the calendar year, ending December 31. The awards ceremony will be during the Summer Symposium in Cincinnati, the evening of August 17. An individual may submit nominations for awards or nominate a fellow USPTA Professional whom you believe is deserving of recognition. Help us identify the most worthy individuals for these prestigious awards.

The current Midwest awards period is from January 1, 2016 to December 31, 2016. Award applications are available on https://www.setteo.com/federacion/usptamidwest/informacion/. Click on the ABOUT tab. Applications are also available by contacting Midwest office, [email protected].

USPTA Professional-level members residing in the Midwest Division since January 2015 may apply for one or more of the awards. Each nominee must be a current certified professional member of the USPTA Midwest Division in good standing. Recreational Coaches may apply with Professional level members for the Charity Event of the Year award for either under or over $10,000. Facility Manager does not have to be a USPTA member.

Midwest Diversity Award USPTA’s Diversity Award recognizes those USPTA-certified members who have demonstrated an outstanding ability to unite diverse populations within their community through tennis.

Nancy Mickler Memorial AwardPresented to the Midwest woman member who has done the most to promote tennis within the Midwest.

Fay Tooley Memorial AwardPresented to the Midwest member who has done the most to promote the USPTA and tennis but has not received notoriety.

Facility Manager of the Year Nominee does not need to be a USPTA member.

Charity Event of the Year (Lessons for Life)Over $10,000 and Under $10,000The award will be divided into two subcategories to honor the various ways USPTA Professionals contribute to charities in their area, events raising less than $10,000 and events raising more than $10,000. An event may win the award only once in a particular category. Recreational Coach may apply for either Charity Event of the Year award.

The deadline for the Midwest USPTA Awards Committee to receive all 2016 award applications is March 1, 2017. Having an application postmarked March 1 is not acceptable and the Awards Committee will not consider those applications. Applications submitted via email must be received by March 1 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern time The entire application and ALL supporting materials must be received on or before the deadline date to be considered. The Awards Committee will not accept applications received after the deadline.

WHERETOSTARTThebestplacetostartiswiththethingthatmostofuscarryaroundinourpocketeveryday,ourcellphone.SomeoftheappsIpurchasedandusedonmyphonewereCoach’s Eye, Hudl Technique, and Dartfish Express.Eachappwillsetyoubackabout$5butisstoredonyourphoneortabletandcanbeusedwheneveryoulike.Allthreeoftheappscovertechniqueanalysiswhichisimportantnotjustforhittingtheballwell,butforkeepingyourstudentshealthy.

IfastudentwasstrugglingwithastrokeIwouldusemyphoneoraseparatecameratogetabetterlookattheproblem.Ialsofounditimportanttogetalookattheissuebymyselffirstandthensitdownandshowmystudentlater.Itmeanttakingextratimeaftermylessonorsometimesduringthelessontoshowthem,butthat“extra”timepaidoffintheend.

IT’SNOTJUSTABOUTTECHNIQUEAnotherwayyoucanusevideoonthecourttoimproveperformanceisthroughmatchanalysis.Youcanhavetheprettieststrokesintheworldbutifyou’replayingwithsmallmarginsandhavepoorcourtpositionyou’lllosetosomeoneplayingsmartertactically.Studiesshowthatpeoplethatlabelthemselvesas“elite”coachescanonlyrememberabout30%ofwhattheysee.Thosenumberscomefromthebestofthebest.Ifyoucanonlyrememberthatmuchjustthinkofalltheimportantpointsyoucan’trecall.

That’swhereusingstatisticsapplications/videoinmatchesbecomesimportant.Onaweeklybasis,Ihadmybestplayersplayasetagainsteachotherattheendoftheirlesson.DuringthatsetIusedanappon

myphonecalledTennisMathtotracktheirservepercentages,errorsandwinnersetc.WhenthesetwasoverwewouldreviewthedataandIwouldaskthemwhattheythoughttheirfirstservepercentagewas,numberoferrorsmadeandwinnershit.Veryrarelywouldplayersgettheirfirstservepercentagecorrect,evenafterdoingthatlessontimeweeklyforyears.UsingappslikeTennisMathhelpednotjustmystudentsbutmeaswell.

NEXTLEVELWhatIlearnedthroughallthoselessonsisthatifyou’regoingtotakethetimetovideotheirtechniqueyoubetterrecordtheirmatchestoo.Sometournamentsallowitandothersdon’t,butifyoucan,recordasmanymatchesaspossible.Iftournamentshaveanorecordpolicyrecordtheirpracticesetsatyourfacilityandreviewthatvideo.Therearesomanythingsbothteacherandstudentcanlearnbyreviewingvideo.Asasport,tennisislightyearsbehindeverymajorsportintheworldintacticalanalysisreview.

Havingvideoofmatchplayallowsmetogobackandcheckforimportantdetails.Areyourmarginstoosmallwhenhittingwithpower?Whattypesofshotsaregettingyouintroubleinthepoint?Areyoubeingaggressivewithyourpositioning?Areyoubeingtoopassiveonyoursecondserveandputtingyourselfondefenseimmediately?Thosearesomeofthequestionsyoucanstarttoanswerbyreviewingmatchplayfootage.Ithelpsyouasateacherandinturnhelpsyourstudents.
