Welcome to Year 7

Introduction Year 7 marks the start of your high school journey and to ensure that you achieve the best that you can, this handbook will provide you with information regarding your assessment requirements so that you can plan ahead and be successful. Each subject has a published schedule of assessment tasks which must be completed throughout the year in order for a grade to be awarded to a student. We hope that students and parents will take the time to read through this information together in order to help them understand the school’s expectations regarding assessment and assist in organising the time for them to complete necessary homework and assessment tasks successfully. Ensure you keep it in a safe place and remember to put all the tasks that you have due on a calendar so you do not forget when one is due. This year will be a very important year for you as you are in Year 7 and Year 7 requires a new level of maturity, responsibility and a recognition that your primary school years are about to be left behind.

HOW CAN PARENTS/CAREGIVERS HELP?

x Take an active interest in your child’s homework and assessment tasks. x Support your child in setting aside time each day for their study. x Provide a dedicated place for homework and study if possible. x Communicate with teachers any concerns about the nature of tasks or your child’s approach to

homework and assessment tasks. x Encourage your children to read and take an interest in current events. x Alert the school, as early as possible, to any circumstances which may need to be taken into

consideration when homework and assessment tasks are being set or marked. x If you have any questions about the information contained in this booklet, please contact the Head

Teacher of the relevant faculty.

Remember good grades do not just happen; they happen because of hard work and dedication.

Best wishes for a successful year and good luck!

Mr Tim Lloyd Principal

General Guidelines Assessment is the opportunity to show what you know and what you can do.

Your assessment tasks will help to diagnose your strengths and weaknesses so that teachers can focus their teaching on what you need to learn to be successful at school. You will also find out about areas to concentrate on to improve. They are designed to measure how well students have achieved the outcomes of a particular course. The outcomes will then be reported on in each of your semester reports using the following scale. All assessment tasks contribute towards your final grade and achievement level in each subject you study. The results of this work will be shown in your Semester Reports.

Course Performance Descriptors In every course studied, a student will be issued an A – E grade based on the Course Performance Descriptors and their performance in ongoing assessment tasks. Each course has its own course performance descriptors, but the following chart gives a general description of the student performance required for each grade. A student’s grade in each course will indicate the level of achievement and performance they have reached.

The following are the general course performance descriptors from the Board of Studies:

Grade General Performance Descriptors

A Outstanding achievement

The student has an extensive knowledge and understanding of the content and can readily apply this knowledge. In addition, the student has achieved a very

high level of competence in the processes and skills and can apply these skills to new situations.

B High achievement

The student has a thorough knowledge and understanding of the content and a high level of competence in the processes and skills. In addition, the student is

able to apply this knowledge and these skills to most situations.

C Sound achievement

The student has a sound knowledge and understanding of the main areas of content and has achieved an adequate level of competence in the processes

and skills.

D Basic achievement

The student has a basic knowledge and understanding of the content and has achieved a limited level of competence in the processes and skills.

E Limited achievement

The student has an elementary knowledge and understanding in few areas of the content and has achieved very limited competence in some of the

processes and skills.

Rights and Responsibilities THE SCHOOL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR PROVIDING:

x Relevant, high quality tasks to measure student performance in each subject. x The marking criteria which will be used to assess the task. x The outcomes which will be assessed in the task x At least two weeks notification that an assessment task will take place or be due x Appropriate notice of a change to a previously notified task x Prompt feedback on each task. If you are concerned about a mark or rank on a particular task, you should

speak to your teacher as soon as possible after results are issued x Advice on procedures to be followed in the event of an illness or misadventure preventing you from

completing as assessment task or examination x Advice on the procedure and consequences which flow from failure to maintain satisfactory progress.

AS A STUDENT, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR: x Carefully reading the assessment task issued x Asking the teacher for help if you do not understand x Marking the due dates for the tasks in your homework diary and the calendar in this book x Checking with your class teacher to see if any relevant information about an assessment task has been

provided on a lesson you have missed and then arranging to catch up. x Breaking the task into small manageable parts and complete it gradually x Organising any notes, materials and resources that you are using. x Completing any research and keep a list of resources used (bibliography) x Speaking to your teacher if you need help and to check your progress. x Submitting all tasks on or before the due date.

Submission of tasks

x Students must complete all tasks to the best of their ability. x All tasks must be completed by the due date. x Computer or printer failure cannot be taken as an acceptable reason for failure to submit a task on time. It is

the student’s responsibility to save and back-up work frequently. If failure occurs, the student must submit their last printed hard copy as evidence of work complete

x In the case of absence when a task is due to be handed in, the student should try to ensure that the task is received by the teacher that day and make all reasonable efforts to have the work delivered, by hand, FAX, or email to your teacher. This may mean a friend or relative bringing it to the school.

x If a student is not present, then they must report to the Head Teacher on the first day they return to school with a medical certificate or a note from their parent

x Failure to follow these instructions may lead to a ZERO mark for an assessment task.

Life Skills Assessment

What evidence of learning is required?

How will this evidence be

gathered?

What content, learning experiences and instruction will allow students to

demonstrate these outcomes?

How will feedback be provided?

Each student undertaking a Life Skills course will study selected outcomes and content.

OUTCOMES The selection of Life Skills outcomes is informed by collaborative curriculum

planning (Individual Education Plan) for each individual student

Teachers reflect on student

performance in relation to Life

Skills outcomes. Individual

student outcomes need to be

reviewed often to ensure

maintenance and generalization of

knowledge, understanding and

skills across a range of

environments.

Is there sufficient evidence that

students have made progress as a result

of these experiences?

Feedback to students

The teacher provides

appropriate feedback

during and at the end of

activities for individual students.

This can be through oral,

visual or tangible

forms

Content and Learning

Experiences Instruction,

teaching and learning

experiences are planned to meet

the individual student’s

appropriate outcomes. Whole

class programs accommodate for the learning needs

of all students.

Strategies for gathering evidence of

learning in relation to Life Skills outcomes may

include: Observations of

physical responses, engagement in teaching

and learning, performance in practical activities,

participation in group work Written responses such

as diary entries Oral reports and

presentations Visual displays such as

collage, sketching/graphic communication

Students will be

assessed in relation to

the selected Life Skills

outcomes. Learning

for students undertaking

Life Skills outcomes

and content will be

specific to the individual student.

Frequently Asked Questions WHEN IS IT BEST TO COMPLETE TASKS?

x The best time to do your homework is soon after you arrive home from school (snack first!). x Sitting down to complete assessment tasks doesn’t just happen, you have to PLAN your time. x Break the task down and set goals for each day to complete small components. That way you have time to get

help if you need it! x Ask your parents or teachers early for help if you have difficulty understanding the tasks required.

WHERE CAN I GET HELP WITH CLASSWORK, HOMEWORK & ASSESSMENT TASKS? x You can always ask you classroom teacher in class or at lunch time. x Staff in the daVinci centre are also available to help with classwork, homework and assessment tasks. To

access help you need to complete a daVinci Centre referral form (they are on the door of the staffroom). They will then book you in for some support within that fortnight.

WHAT HAPPENS WITH LATENESS AND ABSENCES? In the case of unavoidable absence when a task is due to be handed in, the student should try to ensure that the task is received by the teacher that day. This may mean a friend or relative bringing it to the school. If this not possible, then a medical certificate, funeral notice or other appropriate documentation must accompany the assessment task, which must be handed in to the Head Teacher on the first day back after an absence or illness.

If you know that you will be LATE or ABSENT with sufficient reason eg. a funeral, approved school activity or urgent medical attention, you will need to explain the circumstances in a note, before the absence, to your Head Teacher and a new due date will be given.

x Unexplained absences are unacceptable because it is a deliberate attempt to advantage yourself. x Requests for extension must be made to the HEAD TEACHER prior to the due date of the assessment task. x Students who hand in/complete assessment tasks AFTER THE DUE DATE without the appropriate

documentation will be awarded a ZERO mark. WHAT HAPPENS WITH TECHNOLOGY FAILURE? Computer or printer failure or malfunction cannot be taken as an acceptable reason for failure to submit an assessment task on time. It is the student’s responsibility to save his/her work frequently and back it up to both hard drive and disk regularly.

If technology failure occurs, the student must submit their last printed hard copy as evidence of completed work. If the assignment is to be submitted on disk, the last saved copy is to be submitted. If students have portable storage devices they can bring it to school and print in the library on the due date. Students could also email themselves a copy of the task to present as evidence to the classroom teacher.
